Upon Murad IV's ascending to the throne, Valide Kosem Sultan became the most powerful woman of the Ottoman Empire. She now took the place of a regent to her royal son.
Back then, Kosem Sultan was basically a padishah of the Ottoman Porte and ran the Empire on behalf of her 11-year-old son. According to the European ambassadors' memoirs, Valide Kosem Sultan was even secretly present at the Divan. While hiding behind a curtain, she advised her son on what decision to take or what answer to give.
The reign of Kosem Sultan lasted five years until the time when Murad Sultan turned into a young and very ambitious young man. He now headed the Empire's rule and dismissed his powerful mother from all public affairs at his own will.
