I was in San Diego a couple years back. I talked to Korean BJJ practitioners and one said, Japanese exchange students who trained in Kosen Judo were extremely strong. @@Reddragondiaries not so here in the States. Those of us ( I have been around for a while) that were trained in what we refer to as old school Judo, practice standing and ground fighting to their fullest. A lot of the modern schools only focus on Olympic Judo which has a smaller curriculum. As a Jujitsu ( my foundation) person, i then incorporate the Judo into the self defense and combat aspects of the training. Works well! Especially when you add striking combinations to soften the opponent then power slam them then finish with a strike or lock.

Kosen means "Technical" in Japanese. Kosen Universities are the Technical Universities of Japan, so not "elite" at all.. think Georgia Tech, not Harvard. The Kodokan Judo practiced in Kosen Universities is due to a different set of rules than IJF ("sport" or "Olympic"). Look it up yourself.

You shouldn't be shocked. Remember the origins of BJJ. Mitsuyo Maeda began teaching Helio, Carlos, Luiz Franca, and others in 1914. Previously, he and 4 other Kodokan black belts were sent from Japan in 1904 by Jigoro Kano himself to help teach judo to the world. What did these 5 black belts specialize in? Kosen judo.

+Frank A Appeal to association fallacy. Kosen Judo didn't have their first competition since 1914. Conde coma already left Japan in 1904. Sure you can argue that Kosen existed sometime before 1914 and maybe at 1894 as the earliest date. But almost everyone learned directly from mainly by Jigoro Kano. Those who excelled in newaza were those who trained with Oda and Kanemitsu. Coma never trained with them as far as Im concerned.

Kosen judo without its name, has always existed. Currently, mostly practiced at Universities in Japan. Kodokan Judo, is just one Judo. Kosen Judo was named because Judo practitioners, decided to emphasize the Ne waza aspect of Judo. So, in a sense, ne waza practice, has always existed, when Jigoro Kano implemented more ground work in Judo called Fusen ryu Jujutsu. Its just a name, to identify the emphasis on ne waza but it has been there, since Judo's inception. What the Gracie's did was emphasize it even more and in some cases, at the exclusion of tachi waza. Helio tweaked it but did not invent it.

@@mikegreen5502 Because Kosen is not a style. It is all Kodokan judo. If you look at the meaning of Kosen, you have your answer. This is the "kind of" judo practiced in the seven Universities in Japan, nothing more, nothing less. Those universities have their own competitions and they go by the Kosen rules, not the Kodokan ones. You must know that IJF also have different competition rules than the ones applied in the Kodokan competitions. So, Kodokan, IJF and Kosen are all (Kodokan) judo.

I’m still kinda confused though Kosen Jūdō is Kodokan Jūdō it’s just a different variation of rules. So does this mean let’s say you go to a tournament the tournament will have traditional/standard Kodokan rules in which 70 percent standing 30 percent groundwork or will it will be Kosen in which 30 percent standing and 70 percent ground work? And what are the other variations of Kodokan Jūdō like are there different branches of it like how there are different branches of let’s say karate? Also where would I go to to train if I wanted to learn more standing techniques than ground techniques or vice versa if I wanted to practice Jūdō?

Hey Tom I recently earned my black belt in judo. this video was great miss seeing your sensei from Korea though. which do you prefer more tachi waza or newaza? I always like doing 50/50 but most schools unfortunately forget about self defense do you just practice (sport) judo or judo as a whole? I also practice many other arts ( aikido jujutsu and silat) to help with self defense.

I believe judo or kosen judo is a foundational element of BJJ. However, in terms of the sheer gene pool size, BJJ is progressing and evolving beyond what kosen can offer both in technique and in quality of players. Kosen is essentially only practiced in Japan, and even here, you'd be hard pressed to find access to it. BJJ you can find all over the place.

I read a comment by an old Japanese Sensei who said that the rules and focus on grappling started during a time when Judo wasn't well known in Japan. The new college students had no experience with any martial art. Learning Tach-Waza well enough to compete in a tournament took several years, but ground grappling only took about 6 months practice for someone to start competing. I've heard that BJJ is growing in Japan. I wonder if Kosen students enter those tournaments?

aramis cabrera. I think you may be confused, I'm talking about Yuki Nakai. Even Yuki Nakai said that even though he knew he could not fight MMA anymore, that he thought he could bring up the level of Japanese ground fighting by learning Jiu-Jitsu and even in interviews it said he, directly quoted, trained with many Jiu-Jitsu masters, starting with Ending Inoue and ending with Carlos Gracie Jr. He only said that Judo made the transition to Jiu-Jitsu Jitsu easier for him. And his background was in Judob and also Shooto, as trained by the original Tiger Mask and Shooto founder Satoru Sayama, who was trained in Sambo, catch wrestling, and Judo. And you are right, Komoru was awarded his BB in Jiu-Jitsu, but he did not do so well in competition, losing to Nakai's star pupil, Shinya Aoki and Bibiano Fernandes. Don't get me wrong, I have done historical research, based on primary and secondary sources, and it was not Kano who added any of the ground fighting in Judo, who hated ground fighting and said that "human beings were not to stand not crawl" (Stevens), and Helio Gracie did not invent the leverage in Jiu-Jitsu, as even non-Gracie lineages (See Fadda) were using approximately the same technique up until the 1970s and 1980s when people like Marcio Stambowsky, then people like Roberto Magalhaes, to people many others started to develop the Jiu-Jitsu guard. It was however, Mataemon Tanabe who challenged, beat, and taught and inspired Judo to learn "ne waza", whose slight build made him develop leverage based newaza (Great Japan Judo History), and whose, humble nature, which resulted in history forgetting him, gave the technique for ground fighting in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

Kosen Judo isnt a separate organization or system from the kodokan................It is just a RULESET played within the Kodokan, Kosen Judoka get their belts from the Kodokan,are members of the Kodokan and Kosen Judo games are sanctioned by the Kodokan. The whole system is the same as the Kodokan the only difference is there allowed unlimted time on the ground.........I dont know why ya'll keep speaking about Kosen and Kodokan as if it were a different organization.....

Well yes, that could "potentially" be a problem but if taken into consideration a closed guard could also be beneficial. There are many options from a closed guard one of which is opening your guard.

You can slam from guard in Kosen Judo. So why would they lock up a full guard? Fun Fact: Slamming from guard is illegal in BJJ.
@duncansutherland47
@duncansutherland47 6 жыл бұрын
Humperdoo I am well aware of that fact, thank you. My only point is that using a closed guard gives you more options than purely an open guard philosophy. Any experienced BJJ or GJJ practitioner would release their guard if necessary. Slamming is not as easy as you seem to indicate with two equally sized opponents. Some Jiu-Jitsu practitioners have such a lethal closed guard that attempting to stand is virtually impossible and could get you in serious trouble. Once again, I'm not saying closed guard is better or vice versa. My initial point was that it would be a good option in some circumstances of Kosen Judo. Respect 🙏

You do know the closed guard is rarely used in high level BJJ and grappling anymore other then MMA. lol Just watch any BJJ tournament and tell me how many closed guard you see now....nothing but 50/50,x-guard,worm guards and de la riva with people rolling into berimbolos these days. Also Slams from guard are banned in BJJ for a reason. its very easy and people get their backs hurt all to often. kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4iTXnmqprh5gtU "“There is a great misunderstanding about the open guard. The great revolutionary of the open guard game was professor Helio Gracie. Fighting from the guard position was one of the great weapons developed by Dom Helio Gracie. To help the weaker person beat a stronger and heavier opponent. The key element of the ‘true’ Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has always been the open guard, which was passed down to us by Dom Helio and Dom Carlos”. www.bjjheroes.com/featured/the-open-guard hehe

Humperdoo thank you for the video compilation and article. While the video definitely shows some serious violations it does not effectively argue the counter to the point I was making that in some scenarios of the Kosen Judo sparring a closed guard would be helpful or effective. The video cherry picked those scenarios and was not intended to argue closed guard vs open guard. In addition, that was never the point I was making. The article you linked was interesting and sung the praises of Grand Master Helio's use or invention of the closed guard to deal with some opponents. If you think an open guard is far superior and you would there for never use a closed guard then I wish you all the best of luck with that.
@mongolchiuud8931

Duncan Sutherland the article is actually saying the open guard is more effective then closed guard, and that people wrongly believe he favored a closed one. A famous saying from Helio Gracie is everything comes from an open guard. You have to open your legs in order to position your self for a technique. Closed gaurd is only for stalling. Lol

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu - Basically Just Judo Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu looks just like Judo, because it is Basically Just Judo. When Mitsuyo Maeda, a.k.a. "Conde Koma", began teaching Carlos Gracie in Belem do Para, Brazil in 1917, he was teaching Jigoro Kano's Jiu-Jitsu direct from the Kodokan in Japan. The name "Judo" was not popularized until 1925. Mitsuyo Maeda was a Kodokan Judo instructor whose specialty was ground fighting (newaza). This type of ground-only fighting is often referred to as Kosen Judo, or High School Judo, because it was popularized in Japanese High Schools as a form of interscholastic wrestling. Kosen Judo rules allowed direct transition to newaza, enabling scenarios where one less skilled competitor could drag the other down to the ground (a tactic now known as "pulling-guard" in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu). There is absolutely no question that the Gracie family demonstrated great skill and marketing acumen by promoting "Gracie Jiu-Jitsu" or Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to the masses. Helio Gracie's loss to Kodokan Judoka Masahiko Kimura was advertised as a "moral victory". More importantly, the Gracies sponsored the original Ultimate Fighting Championships when the world was begging for a professional combat sport with more depth than Boxing and more realism than the WWF. However, there is now a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students who only know half the story. Worse yet, they are often paying enormous prices for the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu name only to learn a subset of Jigoro Kano's original Jiu-Jitsu techniques and teaching methods. The Judo world has not been without fault too. High ranking judoka often looked down on the new popular MMA world due to Judo's Olympic status. As a result, most Judo schools have been over-emphasizing the throwing techniques within Judo due to pressure from the International Olympic Comittee to increase ratings on TV for the brief moments when Olympic Judo would receive air time. Similarly, there is a generation of Jiu-Jitsu students, and now instructors, who incorrectly think Judo is nothing but a standing sport. Fortunately, the phenomenal success of Ronda Rousey, 2008 Olympic Judo Bronze Medalist and UFC / MMA Champion has brought attention back to the accurate history of Judo and its rightful place in the Jiu-Jitsu grappling world.

This blows my mind. All my life I thought the Gracie's and Brazilians revolutionized JJ to create BJJ. But it's clear watching this and a ton of other kosen and kodokan/newaza videos that they didn't really do anything beyond popularizing, spreading and capitalizing on it financially. Jiu-jitsu may have evolved in the hands of Brazilians as any Martial art does naturally over time but watching this, it certainly wasn't revolutionized by them in any way. Mind blown. I don't even know what to call it anymore... Kosen? Judo? Jiu-jitsu? Nothing seems right anymore lol.

boliussa fun fact: there is NO ground grappling in ANY traditional Japanese jujutsu system. All ground work was developed in 1890s in Japan by one school(Handa dojo) as a way to counter Judo(who were beating every jujutsu system in a series of challenge matches) then absorbed into Judo post 1900s and developed further by the students of the nanatai(kosen) ruleset like Oda sensei his system can be viewed on KZbin under “Oda Newaza”.
@mongolchiuud8931
@mongolchiuud8931 4 жыл бұрын
@@boliussa Thats a misconception, if you google "Koryu style Jujutsu systems" which list all the traditional Jujutsu systems of Japan, then look them up online or their techniques on KZbin you'll notice NONE of them have "Ground grappling" at all. Samurai dont roll around on the ground in armor, nor grapple on the floor with weapons involved. Newaza was created by Mataemon Tanabe as a "personal" style seperate from his Fusen Ryu(which if you look it up has to this day no ground work". Judo assimilated Mataemons newaza into its system, and Judo already has Newaza but it was not what it is now, if you look up katame no waza you see what proto newaza looked like before Mataemon infused Judo with his new system. Also look up tenjin shinyo ryu and tell me if you see any ground work.....kuz you wont. all he took from Tenjin shinyo is the "pins after throws" and some gi-chokes" not exactly grappling and reservals you see today. this is what is Tenjin shinyo ryu....seated jujutsu not exactly ground wrestling... kzbin.info/www/bejne/pnO9iKaupZdjn7s You welcome Also Glad you mentioned "Handa dojo" as i stated in my previous comment, its wear Mataemon tanabe developed their new system of "Ground work" that is not apart of any tradional jujutsu system, but something entirely new.
@boliussa
@boliussa 4 жыл бұрын
@@mongolchiuud8931 i'm not so familiar with some of these terms.. so it sounds like newaza was invented by Mataemon Tanabe who was a jiu jitsu guy, he developed newaza at the the dojo of Yataro Handa which was a jiu jitsu school. Tanabe beat a bunch of judo guys and judo incorporated his techniques. Is that right? So Judo did precede Nezawa.. So you have JJJ then Judo.. then Newaza came into JJJ, then newaza came into Judo. So JJJ always got everything first.

Kosen Judo/kodokan judo is simply the antecedent/forerunner of BJJ there really isnt any difference between the 2 except one was developed in Brazil by KosenJudo/kodokan Judo master Mitsuyo Maeda 100 or so years ago.

@jimmynich4791 7 жыл бұрын
I think when Maeda went to Brazil Kodokan Judo was a lot like what BJJ would later become and while Maeda was out of Japan Jigaro Kano changed the rules of Judo to focus more on throws but kept Kosen Judo rules in some universities. That's my understanding of it, I might be wrong though. I think it stems from when a traditional Jujitsu school in Japan defeated Kano's Judokas utilising ne waza then Judo changed for a while to adapt to that.

Partly true, the myth is that ground techniques come from Fusen Ryu but there is no ground work in any fusen schools. The ground game as we know it today comes from Tanabe Mataemon he was a fusen ryu guy but the ground work was his own invention cooked up in the 1890s at the Handa Dojo simply to counter Judo's crazy throwing skills and took off from there and got absorbed into Judo and in Brazil became GJJ.
