I'ma bjj purple belt who just recently started judo ... I remember starting judo simply because I got tired of pulling guard and pluss my takedowns sucked ... Any how I looked up some places and ended up finding a really good school.. i actually didn't really know much about judo I didn't even know there was different styles etc..... Fast forward I go for my first day , and I remember saying to myself ," wait,..wtf this is jiu jitsu" ... So,,, oblivious to the ground work that was being done I asked my sensei why were the students rolling ... He said this is kosen judo and he went on to explain to me everything ... I stood there in shock of what was going on because I was seeing everything from moves & techniques that resembled bjj ...not gonna lie I figured when I rolled I would butcher these guys because there ground game wouldn't be up to par like mine because of my bjj back ground .... Well , I got my ass handed to me! , I remember thinking no way so I rolled a few more times I did decent with one guy but the other guys gave me hell with constant pressure , strong ass gorilla grips , and aggressiveness & a pace I wasn't used to ...not knocking on my self but I've won Naga tournaments , grapplers quest tournament and also a bunch of other local tournaments and have rolled with pretty solid bjj guys ... But these guys from my kosen school bring a different game , and some of my buddies from bjj showed up to our judo school and after rolling with the guys some of my bjj friends joined the club and the other ones still drop in here and there for like open mat ... However they developed a whole new respect for kosen judo after they experienced it , I've adapted now and and now I know what to look out for etc & my instructor is a 4th degree (Dan) black belt and he's pretty bad ass and he's down to earth ... Now I love judo just as much as bjj ... I'm glad to be doing both..... TBH I'm my most honest opinion it's really kinda all the same shit with different mindsets and approaches ...

Probably? LOL They learned Judo from Maeda, a Kodokan graduate. It was NEVER called "jiu jitsu". That mispronunciation translates into Japanese as "gentle, affectionate sigh". It was called "Kano Jujutsu" until 1882. When he founded the Kodokan, Kano renamed it "Judo". By the time Maeda went to Brazil in 1914, Kano's style of Jujutsu had been called "Judo" for 32 years. Kano changed the rules in 1925 to limit newaza so as to emphasize standing techniques. Tsunetane Oda, another Kodokan graduate and the greatest newaza expert in Judo, asked Kano for an exemption from that rule change regarding the Judo he taught at the Technical ("Kosen") Universities of Japan. Kano granted permission and Oda's students continued to compete under this rule set (and they still do to this day). So, no, the Judo taught in the Kosen Universities is NOT where BJJ comes from. Both Kosen ruleset Judo and BJJ come from directly from Kodokan Judo.
@BloodofPatriots6 жыл бұрын
Conde Koma? Fuck off with that nonsense. His name was Mitsuyo Maeda and he was a graduate of the Kodokan, a Judoka. He didn't teach the gracies Jujutsu -- he couldn't, since he never studied Jujutsu. Instead he taught them pre-rule change Judo newaza. The way the gracies mispronounce Jujutsu as "juijitsu" actually translates into Japanese as "Gentle, Affectionate Sigh". Look it up. LOL
@BloodofPatriots6 жыл бұрын
There is no such thing as a "Kosen Judo" black belt. A Shodan in Judo is a black belt, it doesn't matter if it was granted by the Kodokan itself or at a Kosen University. Seriously, do you even know what that word means? Kosen means "Technical" as in Technical Universities of Japan.
@BloodofPatriots6 жыл бұрын
That's complete and utter bullshit. The Kosen ruleset was an exception to the 1925 rule changes made by Kano to emphasize tachi waza. Kosen rules tournaments are not "rare" in Japan, you fucking idiot. Go to the Kyoto region and you'll see plenty.

BJJ came directly from Kodokan Judo. At this time, all Judo had a lot of ne-waza. Mitsue Maeda (Jigoro Kano´s student) came to Brazil and taught Jigoro Kano Jiu-Jitsu to Carlos Gracie and many others guys that become black belts too. Carlos taught Jigoro Kano Jiu-Jitsu to his 4 brothers. Hélio Gracie (the best fighter) used to fight Jigoro Kano Jiu-Jitsu too. In 1950, the term "Judo" become popular in Brazil. Many Brazillian-Japonese abandoned the term "Jiu-Jitsu" and iniciated to use the term "Judo". Gracie Family decided to be "independent" from Internacional Judo Federation because they prefer practice "ne-waza" instead takedowns.

Why exists judo and jiu-jitsu in Brazil? because some brazillians black-belts decided to be independent from Japan´s Judo. They prefer "ne-waza".

More fun to watch than bjj comps where it's all in the guard and I like the aggression
@vibovitold7 жыл бұрын
This is a selection of highlights, of course it's more entertaining than watching any competition in full. Due to Judo rules once the fight gets to the ground, they need to pull a submission real quick, or else the ref will resume the fight. That's why it's aggressive and fun to watch when someone actually manages to do it (and the footage lands in a compilation like this one in such case). But typically it doesn't happen - what's worse, many judokas will simply lay flat on their bellies waiting for the ref to step in. This behavior makes sense under modern Judo rules, although it doesn't in practical terms. See 4:19, for instance - noone would do that in a bjj comp, let alone on black belt level
@vibovitold7 жыл бұрын
Besides, since many Judokas don't train in this area at all (hardly ever), focusing solely on take downs (I'm not hating - similarly, many guys in bjj do the reverse of that, not practicing their takedowns and only pulling guard), so since that's what they do, they don't really know how to defend against such attacks. This sets them up to be on the receiving end of some flashy actions that wouldn't work out so easily in a bjj competition where everyone is on guard

This stuff is awesome. For some reason, I like the way the japanese move over the russians and brazilians, and anywhere else where people do grappling. The japanese are so strong in their legs, and would always like to be on their feet or in a control position, they stand even when in someone's guard.
@gesshugh99766 жыл бұрын
Of course they stand in guard. Planting is the base of old school ne waza. You should be able to stand immediately form nearly any dominant position. I don't train judo, but in Kudo, we use a lot of the old school "outdated" ne waza, because it works well with ground striking, throws, and takedowns. Not as good in a pure rolling contest, but does better in looser rules. It has its ups and downs.

Kosen is just an abbreviation of Koto senmon gakko ... it's not a refinement of kodokan judo. It's just easier to teach people newaza quicker than tachiwaza. Kids are only in school a short time. Different rules were preserved in the univ tournaments. It's all Judo folks and YES that's where BJJ and Sambo and Kawaishi JJ and Russian Judo, etc. etc. all came from. Read Aikido in Japan and The Way Less Traveled. Detailed history of Japanese moving to Brazil and taking their arts with them.

***** You are right that Kosen is not a refinement of Kodokan Judo. Kosen Judo IS the continuation of the traditional Judo. The current Kodokan Judo that was popularized by Kano in 1925 is a streamline/filtered version of what was developed in pre-war/WWI, WWII Judo. This historical truth was kept from most Japanese and other Judoka arcoss the globe for almost a century. Thanks to the internet (and partly to the popularity of bjj), Kosen Judo has a rebirth and is on full resurgence.

You said Kose Judo is a continuation of Kodokan Judo, As a Judo Black Belt 2nd Dan I can tell you and you can google yourself. Kano pooled together several systems of Jiujitsu into Judo in the 1890s, besides what few NEWAZA(ground skills) judo inherited from Fusen ryu, but it was still mainly Throwing style. Its wasnt until the 1900s that "Newaza" experts seeing as how much easier grappling was to teach and master developed it more. Jugoro Kano then implimented more rules to keep the system more balanced which unfortuntely became a Olympic Sport which.....Added even more restictions. But the point is what Kano developed is different from Kosen or Bjj, and different from modern judo too. fact
@kigawman9 жыл бұрын
Mr. Robot *"You said Kose[n] Judo is a continuation of Kodokan Judo, As a Judo Black Belt 2nd Dan I can tell you and you can google yourself."* - You misread what I said, this is what I meant: *"Kosen Judo IS the continuation of the traditional Judo."* *"NEWAZA...judo inherited from Fusen ryu"* - Nope. Fusen Ryu does not have Newaza! Mataemon Tanabe credits Yataro Handa (Sekiguchi Ryu) for teaching him all of the aspects of Newaza before he taught them to his Fusen Ryu students. Judo does not purely concentrate on Nage Waza but has few techniques in Katame Waza that finishes people in the ground. Kito Ryu was that art which Kano was introduced to that particular knowledge of fighting. As you said, Kano "implimented more rules to keep the system more balanced which unfortuntely became a Olympic Sport which.....Added even more restictions." That is true, however, 1925 Judo is still the core of what modern Judo does today. I am fully aware of what Kano did so don't school me on the differences between Traditional/pre-1925 (Old School Kodokan - Kosen,BJJ,Sambo) and Mainstream Judo/1925-present (IJF and current Kodokan).
