Steve, you might be interested to know that kubi nage has been a staple in European wrestling for about 2500 years. There is a Greek vase painting depicting it from that long ago. Also, you can find the throw described in 19th century wrestling manuals such as 'Dick's Art of Wrestling,' 1887 as well as a 1467 manual by Hans Talhoffer. In the 19th century, the technique was often called the 'cross buttocks' throw.

Thanks for that information haffoc. The "head and arm" takedown is, as I'm sure you know, one of the main takedowns in the modern wrestling styles we see today. It's one of those universal movements that humans do, no matter what culture it's done in. Thanks for the information.

This explanation blew my mind! I practice Jujutsu and we use many Judo techniques but of course we can't study all of them as a Judoka would. We had an instructor from another club as a guest and he showed us Kubi Nage and asked to name it. I guessed it would be a (modified) Tai Otoshi but he said I was wrong since it is more of a hip technique. Now that you said that it's kind of in the middle of Tai Otoshi and Koshi Guruma which obviously is a hip technique, I am less confused! Thank you!

Glad this video was helpful to you. We have more videos on both Koshi Guruma and Kubi Nage on our channel. Check the playlist titled Koshi Waza.

Kubi Nage is my favorite hip throw. I'm tall and many people are shorter than me. If someone is taller than you then Ogoshi with your hand around their waist is a better throw for you.

I think Kubi Nage is one of the most important throwing techniques there are. I agree with you David.

The sagging hip throw takedown is a related alternative to Kubi Nage.

In kubi nague kake, the tori finish looking to the floor, or to the side ?

Right hand positioning differs from the Kodokan. At first, demonstrate the Kodokan version and then the modified one (only my two cents...). ;)

Having a hard time with this throw. People tend to "sit down" and I can't get my hips under them, or their head slips out under my arm altogether. How do I fix these problems? Thanks

On January 21, we have another video on Kubi Nage and Tai Otoshi scheduled for viewing. I recommend you watching it as it may have the answer to your problem.

Another suggestion. Look at your kuzushi. Perhaps that may need work.

There are counters to such throws. They only "work" if your opponent isn't expecting the move (it is executed very quickly, opponent was distracted, etc) and your opponent doesn't counter the move with another move.

i am not sure what the difference is between the kubi nage and the guruma

Both throws demonstrated here would be considered koshi guruma as kubi nage is not part of the Kodokan curriculum. kzbin.info/www/bejne/iYaaepdsqrt9apY
