Super Mario 35 is finally here! And it's BETTER than I expected! There was a really good chance the physics and latency were bad, but the game plays well and I'm really excited to make a TON of videos of it!

I think the craziest thing that's so easy to overlook is just how fast you play the game. Like not just speedrunning a level without slowing down but getting all the coins and enemies and powerups incredibly quickly

I feel like the reason Mario's speed feels reduced in this game is because all of the sprites are being displayed in 8:7 aspect ratio instead of 4:3 like the original

It's kinda funny when you see top tier players play games for the first time because they have such an analytical mindset that they perform worse than most (even some casuals with good reflexes) at first, but once they get all the mechanics down, it's like watching a superhuman play

tips made by myself: -if you attack people with lowest time, they will have more enemies to defeat and mote time to get -if you attack people with most coins, they can spend their coins on item roulette

When the timer is red, you NEED to get hit, so the timer pauses, saving time

It’s actually not by surprise, it’s not even Nintendo’s idea. There was a free flash game where you played through the Mario game with 100!! other players and last one alive or first one to get all the way through wins. It was up for only a few days before Nintendo removed it and then they made this, stealing tjay guys idea, making it less players, and not giving him anytning.

It honestly wouldn't be all that impressive. 35 people who have spent hours memorizing every bit of the game...as it was originally, not with random goombas and bowsers thrown in everywhere. I think the muscle memory would actually end up working against them. I'm sure they'd fare much better than most, but what you're going to see is the people who are best at this game are going to be the ones who know how to manipulate it through experience.

It probably feels like you're running slower due to the screen aspect ratio & size in this version. I felt like the acceleration and running was a bit off too, it might be slightly different. Why they'd change that is beyond me, but I'm sure there's a reason.

You could do it without seeing or hearing the game, but I'm not sure that would be enough to give your lobby a chance. The fact that Nintendo, instead of just copying their SMM code, took the time to rewrite and upgrade their old SMB physics is a proof that this game will never die.

Personally, I would love to see a Vs. Super Mario Bros. 2 Famicom Version from Japan, to do a 35 vs. yourself type of rom hack for Super Mario Bros. 2. It would be also funny to see Contra 35 vs. appear at some point down the road. That would be hilarious to watch all of them fail at the beginning level.

To answer your question, Hammer Bros. may seem weird at first but here's how they work. If a Hammer Bro or Bowser is to the left of Mario, they enter Charge Mode, where they chase after you at an insane speed. If they're to the right of Mario, they enter Guard Mode, where they try to cockblock you as much as possible by moving very little increments left and right erratically as they throw hammers/breathe fire and jump.

I've played a couple rounds and definitely noticed the physics. It feels like they made the effort to be more authentic with the physics compared to Mario Maker, but tweaked things to fit modern Mario games, namely the power up system and the enemy bouncing. I think it's much more accessible that way. Not that I dislike the originals physics - I've played it so many times that I can pick it up instantly, but it does have quirks that threw me off first time, as someone who started with the New series as a kid. The one thing that trips me up still sometimes is when you stomp on a green paratroopa and they change direction! Near death sentence if I just took them out with a short standing hop. Literally turns round and punches me for taking his wings. 😛

The physics should be basically identical to the original SMB aside for a few small tweaks, and certain glitches not working anymore since this doesn't have the limitations that the NES had hardware & programming wise. The physics seem practically identical though.

Also, the warp zone doesn't works more like The Lost Level in that it can bring you back to a world you've already visited + it bring you back to a stage. (You can even redo world 1-2 if the warp zone offer you to.)

It was probably figured out by now, but the random extra enemies (ex. 4:03) are from other people's games, so whenever you kill an enemy, you send a light blue-colored version of that to someone's game randomly, and sometimes it can send a huge wave of them EDIT: I made this comment before he did mention finding it out (he mentioned sending Hammer Bros to people) so this is for anyone who didn't know now I guess 😂

Knowing I have 9 wins within 24 hours of release and Kosmic himself had just 4 more than that... fills me with both determination and a fairly positive notion of the fact that I'm comparably decent at running 1-1 and 1-2 a million times in a row while actually taking the time to kill enemies and collect coins to the world record holder who has a completely different skillset LOL.
