I've gotta say that I _really_ loved that first one a lot. They had really nice and clear visuals, the time-rewind theme for turning Dry Bones into a Koopa and then letting you shoot additional shells with a power-up was an awesome idea. It'd be neat if they made a full hack like Teenage Super Ninja Plumbers did, but thanks as always for showcasing these!

I sort of can’t believe that the fourth place one didn’t beat the third place one. I thought it was better in pretty much every way. I do sort of get the winner though, it is a pretty unique take on the gameplay.

Honestly, I'm glad they got a full 2 weeks (edit: 1 week, actually) this time. With the 3-day one, you could tell the corners that needed to be cut and you wanted to see so much more from their ambition. 1 week is a much better length of time to work on these for a game jam. Also, I feel the 4th place got robbed. EASILY the best of the bunch.

idk I think it depends on your criteria. It the sense that "I could see this being an actual game on NES as-is" it was the most overall polished and complete... but that's largely because it was basically just SMB again with sprites swapped and a few enemy behaviors mixed around. The others had less overall gameplay and aesthetic coherence, but a LOT more going on in terms of original gameplay and ideas. We didn't get to see much of TMNT, but 3rd place seemed to have some sort of time travel mechanic going on IRT level progression, and 1st place was an entirely new game built out of the SMB "engine" (such as it is). In terms of game design, these are much more interesting and impressive than "Lost Levels 2 - with NEW KOOPA MODE!" and that tends to be what game jam judges are looking for.

@@607 I did read it. I commented here after I read it. Adding in more features or gimmicks does not automatically make a hack better just because they exist. They need to be implemented well so the overall experience is better and more fun. The other games did not do this thus I feel 4th is the best of the 4 games.

3:16 Getting a free invincible star when you reach 100 coins is a GREAT mechanic. It's much more rewarding in real terms and let's you strategize about when you actually want to collect the 100th coin.

Kosmic, notice at 21:49 you clipped into the block. You did it earlier as well (~20:25)l. There's apparently an invisible block there. That invisible block must have a coin in it, right? Therefore you could use it to change your color? Does that impact the puzzle there at all? In theory it'd let you go Green > (invis) Coin > Black {= bonus time & combo reset} > Red, removing 2 penalties (black/red) and replacing them with 1 time reward. But then you'd still have to suffer two more penalties (Black + Red) unless there were another invisible block you could tap into. Is it possible for them to have put an invisible block _overlapping_ with a Koopa (e.g. top Black-ish) in this context, which would let you do something like `Green > (invis) Coin > Black {=bonus} > Red > (invis) Coin > Green {=bonus} > Black`, suffering zero penalties and getting two bonuses?

Obviously these are all great hacks especially for just 1 week of work and I guess changing the gameplay loop so drastically is what won first place but it doesn't look like it was more fun to play than the other 3, honestly. My opinion in terms of how good I think the hacks are. Worst on the left and best on the right. 3rd < 1st < 2nd < 4th This is only a guess for 2nd as we have not seen it fully. But if it changes after we get the full Kosmic playthrugh, I will edit this post to reflect this.

Impressive games to make in a week. Least impressed with green red dead mario, but ok idea for a while. Both koopa games are great. Damage clip and "cheep-o-boo" term is funny. That first place one doesn't look fun at all, I can't believe it won. It's technically impressive, but the actual execution was awkward and confusing. I don't mean that it's confusing to keep all the colors in your head quickly, I mean that you need a guide to understand what's going on to begin with, cheep cheeps turning into floating koopas feels more like a bug than a feature so it was initially unclear if you're meant to stomp them, standing around as they walk off-screen is very awkward, and the movement required to make some of the jumps seems annoying and best done with savestates. I don't necessarily want to crap on the hack itself, I know it was made in only a week and that's certainly impressive, I just question how it could've won first place when it was the worst to play. Did the judges value custom coding that much more than custom graphics?

Hey idk if this would fix anything, but when watching your videos I noticed that mario went invisible when taking damage when he normally flashes, and when I switched to a 60fps playback he flashed like normal, so I was wondering if offsetting your video by one frame could make it so Mario dosnt turn invisible, however he wouldn't flash either, just be fully solid

He doesn't always go invisible, usually for part of the duration and visible for part of it. The game runs at 60.09881 fps, doesn't matter how sync'd up you get its not gonna stay sync'd. How would you accomplish delaying the recording by a frame anyway? The solution is watch in 60fps haha
