Pain by the community is defined by how quickly you get to the annoying parts. Kan is a machine gun constantly getting you straight into the action. Kosmo is a slow burn that eases you into it with alot of simple easy straight sections that "lead" into the annoying parts. Also, cosmetic track design helps alot to mellow out the experience, something kan always finds to be "inconsequential" and thus doesn't focus on it too much. Because of this, players focus on the more technical aspect of his track rather than just "the ride" of the track. People see it as pain because kan's design style makes them "feel" like they have to study it more despite it being just as difficult as everyone else's simply because kan makes the "track" the thing you focus on rather than the "ride" of the track. Passive vs active engagement. That's the difference. Demand of focus. I only point this out to help clear up the confusion on why people react differently with "pain" vs "this is hard but nice" comments.

@@galois6569 Happy to help, this more-so was for kosmo and kan tho if I am being honest. An insight on level design. My hope is this insight could be useful to them where they may take it into consideration when making future tracks. Not saying they should or have to (I mean, at the end of the day, all of their tracks are already good tracks after all), just hoping to help them become aware of it should they wish to act on said knowledge. Something to keep in mind is all. To add onto that topic, easy start but ramping in difficulty tends to be how you design a basic level, where jumping straight into the action is how you design a boss battle. Both design styles have their merits, but you can see why a boss battle would more quickly be referred to as "pain" rather than a level in a really hard platformer. Funny enough, boss battles tend to be fought in a boss battle arena rather than a very pretty and detailed map.

I agree, the kosmetic (yep, I did that) aspect is significant. Tracks like this can feel like a more achievable challenge because it's clear what has to be done and doesn't take a bunch of guesswork to work out some pattern
@Hadeks_Marow
@Hadeks_Marow Жыл бұрын
@@benjaminfranklin329 I think you got the opposite reaction of what I meant. The esthetics significance is to distract you from the track so that you don't focus as hard on it. You can have a really technical track with really good esthetics, because you are distracted by the pretty colors, your not really focusing on the annoying part of the design. Sorta like adding a bunch of yummy artificial flaviners do bad tasting healthy food that kids wouldn't normally eat. Adding melted cheese to broccoli as an example. It's less painful because you aren't focusing on the pain. If you have a headache, you shouldn't think about the headache or focus on the headache. . . otherwise, the headache will get worse, but if you stop focusing on it, you feel alot better to where you almost don't notice it.

Evolution track idea: you have a regular track then each time you delete 25% of the track. So first track doesn’t have many jumps or anything. Then the second track has missing pieces that you have to jump over. Until the last track that is 75% missing and you have to get really creative making it over the jumps and turns and stuff.

I had a similar concept to this, a track that gets smaller as you go, shrinking to the point where the track was barely bigger than the zeep itself. I started making it but I had only had the game a few weeks and didn't have the skill to make what I wanted yet. I completley forgot about it until I played yours! Maybe I'll still finish it.

Another way to do evo tracks without restarting would be to have a choice of 3 different paths at the start, with each being faster (and harder) than the next. Players can choose if they want to finish easy/medium/hard based on the route they take. If the evolution is slower when it's harder, just have a handicap stretch at the end that's longer for the easier routes but takes +10/+20 secs to get to the finish for that route. You'll get finishes, but only the true masochists would get the best times on the hardest route.
