Koss offers a limited lifetime warranty on almost all of their products, even including the KTXPro1 headphones which often sell for under $15. But what's the catch? Do they honor it? How long does it take? And is it worth it to make use of the warranty, instead of just buying another pair of headphones? Let's find out!

Well, for a true 'free' lifetime replacement warranty, most companies want you to mail them the original receipt and ship it to them in the original packaging, and there are often other terms and conditions, and in a number of cases what you get as replacement is not the same as what you had; they're the 'current equivalent' model which is often inferior. Nine bucks and shipping ain't bad, really, considering you don't need the receipt. At least they're not badgering you at the checkout counter for an 'extended warranty' that'll get denied if you don't have the original box or receipt.

@@xaenon that's dumb because its not a time or price based warranty so why would they need a receipt? Maybe if it was only for a certain amount of time ie: 3 years or if they were to refund the money you paid would they need a receipt to document the exact purchase price and date. Otherwise you have the product so why do you need to prove you bought it to use the warranty?

The thing is, this is a $9 replacement fee for a $15 pair of headphones. They offer the same replacement warranty for $100 headphones, and $150 headphones. I've been a fan of the sound and durability of Koss products for years. Style and feel is another matter, but I think they've always been pretty good products, comfortable and good sounding, for really good prices, in my opinion. They do feel cheap, but I haven't had problems with them being fragile.

Koss has been a wonderful company for customer service. In fact, you can stop by the factory and they honor their warranty for free, no need to pay the $9. They have a little store you can try out their headphones in and if the one you are replacing is in stock, they swap it out there for you. I have had a pair of Pro 4AA headphones that the cord has quit on multiple times and they honor the warranty on then no questions asked!

I love Koss headphones. Like you, I typically just get new ones after a few years if they stop working. I always recommend them to people. So many people right now are using earbuds, which mostly sound terrible (I once went to Best Buy and tried out every high end model of earbuds they sold. I bought them, took them home, returned them.), and on top of earbuds sounding bad already, the current trend are wireless bluetooth earbuds (I've owned those too) which just further degrade the sound quality. AND on top of that, these so-called "music lovers" are playing their music through multiple stages of compression via streaming services and eating up their cellular data (and fed advertising). So if the topic comes up, I always encourage these people to take a break from what they're used to and try a set of cheap Koss headphones and listen to their favorite music in an uncompressed format. I guarantee it will be mindblowing and you won't want to go back.

As someone that lives in Milwaukee, I can say that I've replaced many Koss headphones and I've never paid anything. I just call them the day before and tell them what model I have that needs replacement and they have them waiting for me. I have quite a few ur23s, a ur45, an r10, and a BT540i(which unfortunately doesn't have the lifetime warranty). I drool over the $1k electrostatic headphones, which they will let you demo in the factory store, if you call them the day before and ask. I haven't been there this year so I don't know what's going on there now.

Gotta love Koss. I have a pair of Koss Pro 4AAA headphones that have the series 1 drivers in them. There were 3 different drivers that they used in them. The series 1 drivers being the best. They needed replacement earpads, which are not the same as the Koss Pro 4AA pads. They don't list the AAA pads on their website but I called them and they did indeed have them and they cost me $5 CDN shipped. I should also mention that if you do send a pair of older headphones to Koss, there is a chance that they will replace the old drivers with new ones. And there are quite a few people who are not a fan of the new drivers that Koss uses. There are a few threads about this on Audiokarma and HeadFi I do believe.

I've had many headphones from Koss and have used their warranty replacement umpteen times with the same favourable results. The most frequent problem I've put in for warranty is broken wire in the Porta Pros. Nonetheless, combined with the cost of postage (from Canada), I've found that seeking out replacement parts elsewhere to be far more cost effective. Sellers sell wire pre-tinned, so it's quick and easy to pull the drivers off, use a soldering iron to heat up the solder, and replace the old with the new without doing anything fancy. I suspect this might void the warranty however.

Can't beat these! As shown in the video, Radio Shack sold them in the 80's 90's as rebranded "Titanium Pro." I bought a couple of the Radio Shack Pro 35. You just can't beat the sound from these at any price really. You might have to spend $200 to get something that sounds as good. These are open air, which in many ways is superior to the sound you can get from closed ear, although with a lot of ambient noise these won't be useful, like in busy loud city streets. But in short, you just can't beat them. Now Koss has a new model with a mic on the cord. The lifetime warranty is great if the final cost for shipping and fees ends up being lower than buying new ones. You can also replace the cord by buying a DIY cord from eBay, for about $5 from China, and those wires are super high quality, and solder it. Those volume controls tend to break and aren't necessary.

My father bought me the massdrop version of their flagship headphones for Christmas. They broke recently and had the same turn around time of about 6 weeks. It did cost a bit more than yours to send in but also the headphones were more than an order of magnitude greater price than yours cost, plus it has its own amplifier unit that could've been the problem as well. Overall, I'm quite happy with the replacement, as after shipping it in and getting it repaired it would've cost me sending it out about 12 times before I'd actually spend what they cost.

A number of companies don't pay shipping either way, so $9 and the return shipping is paid is fine with me. They even wanted me to send in my HV1's that I burned a hole in with a soldering iron, except I threw them out before Koss started their lifetime warranty. The Koss warranty is "repair or replace", so even if you got the originals back that is within warranty if they now work. My Pro4AA were repaired, and I'm fine with that.

I had the RadioShack Pro-35 headphones because they sounded great. I went through so many pairs of those back in the early 2000s. They would either break where the drivers connected to the headband or hairs would get into the drivers and make a buzzing sound. I now use a frankenstein pair that I made from a Coby headset with drivers from another pair and a cord. I don't even bother with warranties. Or protection plans. If something fails or breaks I just buy a new one and take the old one apart for parts. If those headphones were mine I would first try to fix them and if not possible I mod them and then if that fails I part them out.

For a very inexpensive model, the cost of getting new ones yourself is comparable to the warranty fee and return shipping cost. But it's nice that for all models they'll follow through.

You should really try out Sennheiser HD 280 Pro headphones, they will take you to another world. They go for around $100 ($80 for a renewed pair) but I really think they are life-changing. I honest to God cannot use any other headphones that are less than my Sennheiser HD 280 Pros. The sound clarity and depth is astounding. I don't know if you're a big audiophile but I know you're big into electronics so I thought I'd recommend them to you.

Odd. I had a pair of KTXPRO1s back from around 2000, although it was the Radio Shack variant (Pro-35A) and i mentioned they were falling apart on twitter, and they contacted me and sent me a replacement pair of KTXPRO1's gratis. I didn't even know beforehand that there was a lifetime warranty on them... or this $9 cost... they didn't request that from me. I love the sound of the KTXPRO1s and they were super responsive with me. So... *shrug* Mine were sent to me in a bag in the packaging.

The irony was that i was about to buy a pair of Porta-Pros to replace the broken KTXPRO1... but now i didn't have to. ;) Also fyi, The KTXPRO were the same as the Radio Shack PRO-25, and the KTXPRO1 are the same as the PRO-35 .. with color and branding differences. ;)

I should do this with my old Koss Pro 4/A headphones. the one driver is completely dead.. do you think they will send a compatible replacement? The Koss Pro 4/aa's would be my only guess.

I'd contact them and ask, I would guess they'll be able to figure out something. I've had reason to contact their support a few times (albeit not recently), and they were always friendly and down to earth.

Koss always has been a decent company with decent products. Have had several different pairs of varying price over the years and found that you get a good value for the price.(Avoid the really cheap stuff from anyone ! ) Add the warranty on top of this and being one of the last old school american electronic companies left keeps me a loyal customer.

I've replaced a half dozen PortaPros. In non-pandemic times, it usually takes 2 weeks, sometimes faster. If you live in Millwauke, and there isn't a pandemic, you can walk into the lobby with broken headphones and they'll hand you a new pair for free.

I hope Koss could make a video and publish it on how to "easily" replace an earfoam and replace or repair a broken wire from inside the headphone. I tried but failed to open or separate the head of the phone to replace the foam. I also seem to have a problem having the wire of my headphone tangled in the arm of my computer and broke off from within. Thank you in advance.

I would have just spliced out the defective area of wire even if it meant sacrificing the inline volume control. There problem solved and cost=free.

It is lifetime for most models. Yes it is $9 to cover shipping . I had a pair of old Pro4AAA's that was probably 25 years old and they replaced them after all these years . Recently I had a pair of DJ100's that the cable had kind of split open and the vinyl along the headband was flaking off and because they no longer make the DJ100's they replaced them with the very good Pro 4S which sound excellent . Yes on the cheap versions there isnt much of an monetary reason to do it they do replace them . This is more for their models that cost a little more . I had the Pro 4S in less than 2 weeks after having the DJ100's for probably 10 years . they came in a brand new sealed box with all the documentation and the carrying case for them . . So they sent me a brand new pair of $100 headphones for that $9 check , pretty good deal if you ask me . Name any other headphone maker that will replace them at any point in their lifetime and give you a brand new pair . Myself I have sent in more than 1 pair of the headphones that you show and they have always replaced them , the problem in all cases for those is the inline volume control . I have seen so called higher end headphones like Sennheiser whose quality is garbage and they dont have any kind of decent warranty so Koss is decent in that they will replace it . Myself I'll pay that $9 for a $100 pair of headphones . If you take the 5 minutes to register your headphones when you get them there will never be any questions asked .

So, they did what they promised. Good on them. I'm sure most people don't take advantage of the service though, because of the initial low cost of the headphones, the 9 dollar cost, and postage.

I've been using the same not expensive Sony headphones for about a decade, the only wear issue is the impossibly thin layer of vinyl on the pads has crumbled and eroded, exposing a layer of poly cloth, which is beginning to fray. Probably $25 from a drug store chain. Nice "Apple" style white cord, 36" long.

That 2008 number on the box is NOT A date. I work for Amazon. That sticker is an LPN sticker, the kind that gets attached to Amazon Warehouse Deals products. Nothing to do with KOSS at all. The 2008 is just a random sequential number.

Has anyone ever tried to send multiple broken pairs in the same shipment? Shipping is so expensive right now around $9-10 + $9 warranty fee = about the same or more of a new pair of KSC75. I have like 5 broken pairs I never bothered to return and if I was able to send them all in a flat rate box with $9 check for each set I wonder if I would get 5 replacements or what?

As long as you bend out the headband a bit, it just lightly sits on your ears, and is perfectly comfortable to wear all day. I've even fallen asleep wearing them.

I dunno. Six weeks? I usually just clip a couple more inches off the end and resolder a new plug on. With the old RS screw on type 1/4 adapter plug it's almost all metal so I've reused the same plug over and over again.

I guess I shouldn't expect much from a big company, but it's a bit disappointing that it was just the pair of headphones in the box. No thank you literature, pen, sticker... You ever write praise letters or emails to companies about a specific product you like? I love doing that, they like hearing it and a lot of times they'll kick some goodies your way. I don't want to name any companies, but some (especially food) really kick out the vouchers.
