25:51 this is how you know Joey doesn’t engage or is aware of the animanga community at all, JJK’s manga fan base is massive. I can agree that s1 doesn’t stray too far from a standard shonen but it still has fantastically written and likeable characters with great fight scenes (in both the anime and the manga). And everything that happens in the manga afterwards is absolutely beloved by fans almost to the same level as the CSM manga. Seriously think he’s just mixing up Demon Slayer and JJK here because while Demon Slayer has it’s manga fans… the best parts of the series come from the anime and that’s always what everyone is talking about.

After Gojo got sealed the manga got really bad imo. So many long explanation or plot point that go nowhere or end up with a plain bad reveal. The combats are overly explained like a bad version of hunter x hunter, maybe Gege idolized Togashi and tried to emulate his style but failed. I dont need a page full of text dedicated to explaining a random guys's power the same chapter hes getting defeated and never seen again. The combat also doesnt fit well in manga form, you get like 5 movements in 1 panel from 1 character and you dont get the intensity from it.

I don't really think there is honestly, even if you want to say the mystery element of it is good, it's really not there was nothing well thought out or deeply planned, nothing really written that well for a mystery honestly. Especially when you have anime like Monster and Death note that already set the bar high, it's got a lot it has to live up to and it fails. When it comes to mystery kinda gotta use that big brain and write it more complex, because the best part of mystery anime is solving the mystery and it should feel like an intelligent anime that actually makes you think and use your brain but at the same time not be predictable.

Relative to newcomers to anime, or relative to people who've already seen and read a lot of shonen? Genuine question, since I can remember people saying similar things about MHA and other big shonen anime. "Just wait for this arc, then it gets amazing!" I read/watch what they recommend and am underwhelmed because it feels like many other shonen I've seen. So maybe the better question is, is shibuya good relative to the shonen standard, or the book/manga/film/anime medium as a whole?
@Skaffabranca Жыл бұрын
@@peacefulbystander847 I'd say with shounen for sure, at this point in the manga it doesn't even really feel like a shounen anymore. All that started with shibuya. @peacefulbystander847 Жыл бұрын
@@Skaffabranca Alright, sounds reasonable. One issue I have when people give recommendations, at least with anime/manga, is that it feels inconsistent whether they're recommending it as a truly great piece of fiction or good relative to shonen or seinen or romance or etc. It feels like they recommend it based off what appealed to them the most. I don't think it's weird, I've watched Bocchi twice now and I don't think there's a reason to think someone's opinion will change drastically as you go on to finish it, there really isn't a huge "bang" waiting at the end that will suddenly boost it up really high, Bocchi is more or less a consistent stable experience quality wise throughout. In contrast, IGN’s recent top 25 anime (of all time, which is a bolder claim than merely ranking the last 10 years) felt like it was mostly made by people watching the most mainstream stuff with maybe one or two people trying to get some excellent non-mainstream stuff in there (nothing wrong with mainstream, but it does make lists predictable when the pattern becomes obvious). Even their solo shojo pick felt like a mainstream pick, Ouran was great, but it felt like it was there purely for being so well known in the 2000s, whereas other shojo like Nana or the new Fruits Basket would arguably be considered better.

K-On has bangers, but its music is a bit too poppy and bubbly for my taste. I think the music in BtR feels more "grounded" because it's more leaned toward alternative rock (despite I don't really listen to that genre a lot, but I can enjoy it sometimes). Another thing I like about BtR is the animation, it's very creative when it comes to portraying Bocchi's personality and situation. There are times when the animation "downgraded" into making Bocchi looking like a couple of squares, and there are times where they over-animate her. And there are also times where they use 3D CGI and stop-motion. It's refreshing to see CloverWorks uses various styles of animation in BtR.

I absolutely love Bocchi the Rock. I rewatched it several times with my friends and I never get tired of watching it. This is only my opinion, but I will remember this as years go by. They did an amazing job with the adaptation, how they portray social anxiety, amazing characters, voice actors, and the music is fantastic. And how it meant to me personally.

Yep. I despise "school" based animes, especially the high school girl anime genera. (Like for example, Beastars annoyed me because it was too school focused, and I was way more invested in the world outside of the school. I'm clearly a furry, but even the furry bait wasn't enough for me when they were focusing so much on dumb high school drama when it just felt pointless and wasted the world around it). I thought I was gonna not really like Bocci too but... This one was different. I suffer from severe social anxiety, and the way they handled it was incredible!! Not only in the execution but also in a way that gives people like me hope. I gave up a lot of my passions because of my social anxiety, and struggled in a lot of similar ways to Bocci. I couldn't help but cheer her on and watch her overcome her anxiety as the series progressed! I also love her friends too, learning to understand her and not treating her any different because of her anxiety (with the exception of giving her a bit of a push here and there). A show like this would have really helped me as a kid and I even find it helping me now even though I'm a grown adult. Is the show absolutely perfect? Well... no. But I do think that this show has helped not only people who struggle with anxiety, but helps other people understand it more too who might have people in their life who struggle with it!

The thing with Bocchi that Joey didn’t mention for the series is the absolutely lightning in a bottle production, which I’d say is genuinely the best we’ve had from a TV series in the industry since Mob Psycho. FFS Bocchi’s VA did that iconic scream without editing, and only recently started playing the electric guitar

Thoughts on JJK: Jujutsu Kaisen is one of the highest selling manga in Japan and overseas. Saying "no one" reads it and that the animation makes it great shows that you do just see it as another shonen. As someone who doesn't enjoy traditional battle shonen it is the only traditional series like that I have ever gotten into and really enjoyed. I read it and watch it and it's strength is the depth of it's characters and how they offer different perspectives on the world. Things I Think Belong On The List That Aren't: Made in Abyss, Girl's Last Tour, Yuru Camp, Sonny Boy, and FullMetal Alchemist Brotherhood. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones that stood out to me as things that were deserving and lacking. The list is more deverse than I expected but still leaned too heavily toward action and adventure with little to no slice-of-life or romance.

Joey's takes on JJK are just getting worse and worse. Mid? Sure, whatever, an opinion is an opinion. But borderline slandering what Gege Akutami has been achieving with the manga ESPECIALLY in the last few chapters has been fucking excellent. His art is brilliant, the story is ramping up, the characters are being pushed to their breaking points, and Gojo hasn't even been in the series for the last hundred or so chapters. That's not even mentioning the Shibuya Incident or the Culling Games which are both absolutely fantastic battle royale arcs that go fucking wild, and that's in just the manga. Saying JJK is "heavily dependent" on the anime is just insulting to Akutami. Like, I'm not mad he has a different opinion, Joey gets a rise out of telling people JJK is mid because it's funny, but the shit he's said here is just rude and disrespectful to Akutami and the manga fans that really adore the series.

30:17 Caught up on Vinland Saga right now and tbh, I think it is better than the first season. It took everything that the first season explored and is going in much more depth with those topics in a way that focuses purely on character. Stripped of any action, the series really puts us in the place of Thorfinn and how war and violence has affected him in a way that makes him one of my favorite characters in recent memory. Part of me wants them to stay on the farm forever, but i know that in this world, that's not gonna happen.
@kamuyking551 Жыл бұрын
I very much agree with this... I think the series perfectly frames itself through the initial lesson that Thors wished he could teach to Thorfinn, which he couldn't pass on before he died. it's why a lot of shots are devoted to cutting back to Thors... he's always relevant. in his grief, Thorfinn turns to anger as a motivating force, but that anger is less about his love for Thors, and more about his hatred of Askeladd. violence isn't proof of love... it's something that frustrated people do to punish the world. this is how it becomes cyclical, and this is why it's hypocritical. if Thorfinn causes pain equal to what he's felt, then he is also forfeiting his right to peace. he can't ask to live well if he's still committed to sowing discontent with his own hands. the cycle of violence has to stop somewhere, and sometimes, you have to choose to stop it yourself. and that takes a lot more effort than letting yourself fall off the deep end into the endless search for retribution, which will never bring back the thing you're actually missing. the truth is, if you want to see something you love thrive in this world, you have to know how to create peace, and maintain it. additionally, if Thorfinn wants to prove that he cares about Thors, he would do so a lot more effectively by considering the man's perspective. it would be more meaningful to keep his legacy alive by embracing the philosophy that he thought was important. and that's what season 2 is all about.

I completely disagree with the take on Bocchi the Rock. The premise that BtR fans haven't watched K-ON or Beck is really not a good argument, it's not our fault that you grew up with those shows and got bored of seeing their relevancy througout the decade, now putting down BtR for "not being a new idea". I like BtR BECAUSE it's better executed than K-ON, it's more gripping, has more development in it's cast, and the plot was written to lead to something that put the characters under time pressure. The rest of the takes were fine, some where really good, but with BtR I feel like you fell for the trolls overpraising it and don't give it as much credit as it should get. The real problem with this list is that we add all these shows in the past 10 years and make it a 2012-2022 list instead of taking a normal decade approach and having it span 2010 to 2020, without so much recency bias...

From non-comedy animes I loved monogatari even though it's somewhat "comedic", My Hero Academia was awesome in my opinion also Could anyone recommend few animes, like from comedy category (like some of the animes from past 3-4 years, since I stopped watching anime at one point due to not being able to watch any shows at my rock bottom phase of life. I personally think Bocchi will last in terms of relevancy. I understand that the fandom is pretty insane, but I also think Bocchi is truly a masterpiece. I think Bocchi might have already become a modern classic. I don't think it's the best of the decade or anything, but I would have absolutely put it on this list.
@ShotterGames Жыл бұрын
Surprising enough a lot of people still undersell the adaptation aspect of it, people act like Bocchi is popular because "relatable fr fr" when a lot of credit goes for the amazing Director and Animators showing such creativity in that show, while putting in a top 30 of decade might be hard to argue, it's easily one of the few adaptations that is better than the manga in every single aspect and there's shows that I gave 9 or a 10 that I don't think that was something above the source material.
@ZahhibbDev Жыл бұрын
I respectfully disagree with this. I can't see how it is a masterpiece or a modern classic yet, as there were nothing in it that made it stand out in a significant way, or at least I haven't yet had anyone describe why it is supposed to garner that amount of praise. To me they overplayed Bocchi's social anxiety from it being cute and funny into it being dull and transparent. Is it the character arc and the coming-of-age narrative bits that is the most significant part that people are appreciating about this anime, or am I missing something here? It's a good anime for sure, but nothing above what we have seen so far in my oppinion.
@jayqunn Жыл бұрын
@@ZahhibbDev "there were nothing in it that made it stand out in a significant way" I don't know what you on about but Bocchi's creative and insane animation and direction alone makes it stand out if you ask me. Like it had claymation, bocchi's game of life sequence, 3d rendered bocchi and literal recording of real life world and all the over the top art styles just for a specific gags, they even went 4:3 aspect ratio for referencing old animes. And obviously the music. They released an album with literally 14 songs and they are all bangers. The characters are also great and have great chemistry with each other and play a huge role to how good this series is. And also the voice acting, Two of the main characters being relatively new absolutely killed it and made it amazing. There's also actual growth and development to bocchi as a character as well with her social anxiety. If all of this doesn't make it a modern masterpiece then I don't know what will.

I personally think Bocchi is deserving of a spot in top 20, it showed that the characters have issues and worked on them in a very tasteful way, comparing it to Beck which came out in the late 2004 (it's a great show don't get me wrong) but feels kind of wrong, Beck is a heavily character driven show, we watched it and enjoyed it cause it was at that time, i feel like today many people would just give up after a few episodes cause there is just so much other stuff that can give you the same enjoyment right from the first episode. TLDR: I think Joey will be proven incorrectly about Bocchi the Rock's impact on fans and the accolades that it deserves. I think Joey is underestimating BTR's success and phenomenon. BTR is not your typical CGDCT anime; not only it has likeable characters, but it has very relatable characters, in a time when social anxiety in the current generation seems to be at an all time high. Also, unlike a majority of CGDCT anime, BTR has genuine character growth and story progression that has real goals that sorely lacking in K-On (if we're comparing anime about girl rock bands) or Watamote or Komi-san (if we're comparing anime about characters with severe social anxiety). While I don't think this series will ever topple anime for the shounen demographic in the long run, but for just one season, it broke through against all of them, not unlike K-On, and I think that's remarkable. For what it's worth, even in the age of streaming video, BTR outsold Chainsaw Man in physical sales and its music album sold more than 100,000 copies in the first week! To me, that's not just remarkable, it shows that BTR has an immense impact on people. I don't doubt that anyone who earnestly watched BTR and relates to its characters and themes will remember this series fondly, just as much if not more so than when people watched K-On back in the day. Does it deserve #12 on the list? I think it's appropriately rated, if not, it's underrated. Borrowing Ryo Yamada's words, Bocchi the Rock may not connect with everyone, but those it does, it'll hit deeply. (As an aside, If I were to fix this list, I'd replace Kakegurui and Promised Neverland with Made in Abyss and March Comes in Like a Lion.)

I arguably saw more people talk more about the manga than the anime, feels like everyone who mentions the anime in the comments already read the manga.

I absolutely loved Summer Time Rendering, one of my favorites of the year It introduced a gripping story and never let go, it kept you invested through the whole thing with great story, animation, and one of the best written main characters in a while in my opinion, and the ending was very very satisfying Definitely deserves a spot in the top 30

I do mostly agree but for me the ending was not that satisfying. It had some pretty obvious logical errors (to me at least, makes me think that it maybe got changed at some point) that may or not may have an in lore explanation that I don't know of. But it stretched my immersion pretty thin. Buuut I still think it deserves a spot especially the first half was basically a perfect show for me.

usually i agree but you’re wild for saying there are no JJK manga fans, JJK easily has one of the biggest manga fanbases currently and all of the best parts of JJK that people love havent even been animated yet, wouldnt call it a bad take, just factually incorrect

why do people value Joey's taste so much? Its not even coming from an objective point. Especially with Jujutsu Kaisen, his opinions really don't have much merit.

Same thing can be said about any other anime KZbinr (Gigguk, CDawgVA, Mother’s Basement, etc). They’re no different than weebs you find on MyAnimeList or in real life. It’s time to stop valuing their garbage opinions as gospel because they happen to have video editing software.

25:58 How is this an argument against the anime? If MAPPA made the anime look good and that's a big part of why people like it, then why does the manga matter? If JJK and Demon Slayer had low budget animation then people would probably like them less, duh. Weird takes.
