【About Asian Small-clawed Otters】
First, otters are different from sea otters.
Sea otters spend most of their time in the water, but otters can live both on the ground and in water.
A few years ago, trafficking otters became a serious problem, and in 2019, CITES (Washington Convention) increased the classification of otters from CITESⅡ to CITES I, which banned international trade.
Having an otter as a pet is illegal in most countries. However, in Japan, otters can be traded, although it is limited to domestic breeds only.
Currently, severe restrictions are in place for buying and selling otters in Japan. For example, microchips need to be inserted in both babies and parents, and owners need a special permit. Circumstances of birth must also be reported in detail.
As a result, there is currently no buying and selling of baby otters in the market. There is a severe penalty for selling and buying otters with unknown birth origins without permits. This was effective in eliminating trafficking, and we don’t see otter trafficking on the news anymore.
Kotaro and Hana were both born in Japan and have permits.
It is so much work to have an otter as a pet. You need to be ready for more than its cuteness. They are loud, and they sometimes bite you. Food and water get very expensive, and you cannot keep otters in cages because they are active. Also, we never leave them at home. We always look after them closely like we do with human children, and our top priority is always them.
If you want to have an otter as a pet, you must be able to follow the law and devote your life to it. If you don’t have that resolve, you should never have one as a pet.

I would’ve taught the process so I could see them do it themselves, that way next time I can just give them the medicine and get them a treat for when they are done, but I tend to treat my animals depending on the base intelligence and when I see how willing they are to participate I’ll interact with them an according amount. With that said, kota is listless as hell loves comfort, I love watching him just move out Hana’s way rather then put any effort into anything and Hana demands more attention then she gets, I think if Hana had it their way they would be taped to their owner. do with this knowledge what you wish but, she hardly needs treats she would obey for your love alone, I didn’t quite understand why she lovingly and thoughtlessly eats all treats until this video when she received literal medicine, that obviously does not taste good, and yet the first reaction is to trust and show gratitude by accepting it anyway, like when you receive a dead rat from your cat but you instead eat the rat in front of the cat and act like it’s good, which is not something I’m capable of so this otter is a better person then me, honestly the most precious little thing. Shoutout to Hana.

こういう症状の時に馬油は本当によく効くんだよな。 父ちゃんが馬油を知っていて良かった。 よく冬場にかかとが乾燥して割れて痛くなるけど、馬油塗るとすぐに良くなる。

No surprise the majority of the comments are oblivious to Asian small-clawed otters' physiology. Their paws aren't meant for over-extended walking on pavement and especially during winter, where the drier air absorbs all the moisture from their pads, making them more susceptible to/exacerbating the effects we see in the video.

@@robertsullivan4773It was a hard watch for me too. They are OK by the end of the video. I can understand where you're coming from though, like why didn't they notice this happening while it was happening. Glad it wasn't anything worse and a good lesson for the dad's to keep a better eye on the environment they take them to. These aren't outdoor otters anymore, they're house pets. I normally share these videos with my mother. I probably won't show her this one.

@@vinawaldren6888 Well, they did try to prevent their paws from getting rubbed raw by using the horse oil during the trip. Perhaps some outdoor activity will need to be scaled back a bit. It's true that the city otters are less likely to have built up the thicker paw skin that Ui and Aty likely have from being more frequently in that environment.
