Kottayam Style Fish Moilee Recipe | How to make Kerala Style Fish Molee - Meen Moilee -Moli Recipe
Fish Molee is popularly named after a lady who modified the fiery hot Kerala style fish curry to a little milder version to suit the palate of the Britishers.
Fish Molee -Molly is a preparation where fish is stewed in coconut milk and very low spiced flavor in masala is prepared, so that flavor of the fish dominates the taste of the curry.
Although, the taste of fish pieces is prominent in this curry yet, thick coconut milk and spices like Green chillies, garam masala, turmeric powder, pepper powder, curry leaves give this dish an extra edge.
The fish used for this curry can range anything from Kingfish to Pomfret to any fish that is fleshy. I made this curry using Surmai or Seer Fish as it’s my most fav fish. But you can go ahead and use any fish of your choice. Even boneless fillets works great in this recipe.
It is a mild, delicate dish best served with Appam / Idiyappam /Rice, etc.

Ingredients :
500 gms King Fish (Surmai) cut into medium thickness & washed well
Marination :
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
½ tsp Pepper Powder
½ tsp Salt
1 tbsp Lemon Juice
For Gravy :
6 tbsp Coconut Oil (for frying the fish)
1 tsp Mustard Seeds
1 tsp Ginger finely chopped
1 tbsp Garlic finely chopped
1 large Onion thinly sliced
4 nos Green Chillies slit in between
2 sprigs Curry Leaves
½ tsp Salt or as per taste
½ tsp Turmeric Powder
½ tsp Pepper Powder
½ tsp Garam Masala Powder
500 ml Coconut Milk second extract (thin milk) made of 1 large coconut
1 small Tomato cut into four
500 ml Coconut Milk first extract (thick milk)
Few curry leaves
1 tsp Coconut Oil
Note :
To make coconut milk :
Grate the flesh of one coconut and transfer it to a mixer grinder. Add about 1/2 cup of warm water and pulse the mixer grinder for a few seconds.
Line a bowl with cheese/muslin cloth and transfer the ground coconut into it. Cover the cloth into a bundle and squeeze to extract thick milk.
Preparing coconut milk from coconut milk powder (for instance Maggi)
To make approx 2 cups thin milk - Dissolve 6 tbsp coconut milk powder in 1-1/2 cups warm water To make approx 1 cup thick milk - Dissolve 6 tbsp coconut milk powder in 3/4th cup warm water
Tips :
After adding thick coconut milk, just heat up the gravy then switch off the heat otherwise the milk will curdle.
When reheating the curry, do it on low heat.
