Jeez. Its real simple guys. Popular music started in America and so its culture is American. So if you sing in English, you will sound American or at least mid atlantic. Thats it! Ive noticed this criticism comes from some Americans, who recognise that its part of their culture and therefore are pissed off that Brits have become equally good (and some cases better) than them. So its not a deception, its just how this music sounds.

I was 13 years old when this song was climbing the American Top 40. I was so upset when it hit #11 or 12 and didn't hit the Top 10. The chorus of this song with all their voices harmonizing together is so uplifting.

Those pilots of the airwaves seemed like friends to me as well, there in the dark. You too? ... And I really hope Charile Dore, wherever she is,, stumbles upon this thread someday and reads these comments to learn how much joy and warmth and comfort and beauty and relatability her simple, gentle song has meant to so many of us over all these years.

Regardless of the charts , when a song remains so blissfully honest & true , for as long as this one has (44 years) , you know it was a great song . Well written , outstandingly well performed , & with harmonies that send it all of the way over the top , & into our souls . A few songs do that . This one still does . Thank you Charlie , wherever you are ! Your humble request of the pilot , made you one . The best songs remain true long after they are written , forever it would seem .

Sad to say, it has now become very unlikely that "The Pilots Of The AirWaves" who are all celebrated in this selection will be able to fly again any time soon, as they once did. Everything on radio is now so mechanized and so lacking in true humanity; those are days everyone SHOULD miss.

When I listen 2 this song, it brings me back 2 my childhood, being at our camp listening to the battery powered radio, because we had no electricity there, and it was all I had. Very few kids today can relate to this song in it's true meaning. I enjoy it. I realize I am lucky to know what's it like to have almost nothing. It makes me more appreciative of what I have.

Love that rich, bright harmonic sound that was so prevalent in the 70s and early 80s. Still have Charlie's LP "Where To Now" with this song on it, and also the 45 of the radio edit. Was pleased to find Charlie had kept writing songs, with, for instance, Celine Dion's "Refuse To Dance" to her credit in recent years...

I remember hearing this song on one of those cheap fake rack systems Kmart sold under, believe it or not, the brand name of Pilot. My girlfriend in high school had one of those systems and it was a joke. It was fastened together in m the back but made to look like a rack in the front.

Is it not amazing that hearing a song can time warp you back to an earlier time in your life? For me this song takes me back 30 years to when I was in Belize for two months. It was a popular request on one of the local radio stations. Thank you for the post.
