No, he needs to go through another top contender before he gets to the champ, give him Nguyen or anyone in the top 5 or outside the top 5 that can match Tonon's level, and if he wins either via finish or decision, then he gets the title shot.

Wow, a huge homage to Matsushima. He survived the lion killer's nest. Pretty amazing. It seems a mistake that Tonon tried to finish Matsushima with a RNC. Trying to do that, he spent his energy so much that he could not use his striking skills afterwards. That's a shame. I think he should have followed his usual tactics that he surprises his opponent with his strikes and then he use takedowns and ground strikes. Only after having given enough damages to the opponent, he should finally have crowned his victory with a submission skill.

Compared to some of his previous fights, I felt that Tonen’s stand up wasn’t very good. His kicks were awkward. Perhaps he was being cautious because Matsushima is a step above most of his other opponents.

I have the sense that Tonon could have finished this. I know the gloves make it more difficult to get the hand behind the head, but I think he could have got the strangle. I suspect he is getting rounds under his belt. Good fight.

Finally, Tonnon is fighting again! Glad he got the win although left striking to the final round. Maybe trying to prove a point? (yes I'm no Clay Guida but can grapple at top level too) And where is his coach??? (guy similar to white strong baby). This might explain lackluster gameplan. Hope he gets title shot.

I think Tonon needs to work on his stand up game to set up the grappling and submissions. MMA fighters are more well rounded these days. It will be interesting to see how his chin holds up Roger Gracie being a case in point a beast BJJ with a glass chin who couldn't translate his success to MMA

@sjtdxitditsitdurzirxur59263 жыл бұрын
Tonon has a lot of work to do before he becomes an elite fighter. Any of the BJJ specialists that transitioned to MMA would've choked that guy out from that position. I think a lot of MMA fighters regardless of BJJ prowess would've finished the fight there.
After two rounds, am I watching the same fight as the commentators? Tonon has yet to fully commit to a submission, as far as I can tell. When you know you can win and you let the other guy reset, you're looking for sparring practice *and* a win.
@hrdept.79034 жыл бұрын
He is definitely a good bjj artist but still ways to go before a well rounded mma fighter. He could've easily choked him out if he is pounding him underneath but nice performance nonetheless.
