They wear white because they are rather petite, so they choose to wear all white because Metal stages are usually dark. White would reflect the light causing them to be better seen. Asami, vocals, lived in LA in her late teens while studying ballet. The guitarist stage left is Miyako began piano lessons at 3 yo, deciding to learn to play the guitar at 17/18 yo. Got a "how to" book and guitar, no lessons! The song was written by the bassist Miho with their producer Mao. Follow up reactions; "Swan Song with Chopin Etude" and "Set the World on Fire" You'll see why there is piano on stage and listen to Asami go higher in her range.

Be warned, once you start on the journey of Japanese all-female metal bands, it is a long and deep dive! You won't want to come up for air for awhile! Lovebites, Nemophila, Band-Maid, Aldious, Fate Gear, Bridear, Hanabie, Hagane, Gacharic Spin, and many more. Lovebites, Nemophila, and Band-Maid are the main trifecta, though. Also Babymetal, but they are a whole different concept.

Band activities are very popular in Japan, and there are more than 100 female bands alone. Among them, one of the top groups is LOVEBITES. LB is a relatively new band formed in 2016 by Miho (bass) and Haruna (drums), but they made their major debut in just half a year from the first stage, and have been active mainly in Japan/UK/EU. . They have already participated in major metal festivals in various countries, including "WACKEN OPEN AIR 2018", and have been highly acclaimed. In addition, he continues to interact with other famous bands, such as serving as a support act for "Dragon Force UK Tour 2019" at the offer of Herman Li. They didn't want to be bound by metal stereotypes such as "dark clothes and decadent lyrics," and defined themselves as "like lone wolves." it's amazing to see that people who listen to pop music can appreciate heavy metal. Maybe heavy metal is not dead yet... Personally I don't like pop music much except for a few exceptions. I find this music instrumentally poor. It's sad to see that Lovebites who play old school heavy metal is not more known. It's the fault of the record industry that puts on the air what most people listen to, it's more profitable... And they don't want to invest in what is no longer fashionable, even if it's very high quality.

You are the first reactor I've heard use the word "ethereal" to describe their look, and you also mention "girl power", so I have to share with you an excerpt from my 5-year review of Lovebites: "The typical reaction of rock fans on first seeing and hearing Lovebites is...confusion. They are tiny, almost ethereal in their appearance, but they play explosive, highly technical music-exactly the kind that women are not expected to play. With every performance, they shatter one of the most enduring glass ceilings in music by proving that women can do heavy metal as well as or better than the men who invented and defined it. In fact, they have done more than break the glass ceiling: they have erased the traditional lane markers in popular music altogether. Women in Western mainstream music largely stay in the singer-songwriter lane. However, there is a rebellion under way in other parts of the world, and Lovebites are one of the groups leading that rebellion. They have shown that it is ok for women to sing about more than bad relationships and heartbreak. That it's ok to be complete bad-asses on rock instruments. That it’s ok to be better than the dudes. That, in fact, it’s ok not to sing about dudes at all! If you are not used to high-octane rock or metal, Lovebites can be daunting at first. The rewards, however, are some of the most intricate and beautiful compositions in modern music. They don’t do throw-away, radio-ready songs; they do concertos and anthems. For music nerds who love to study the details of arrangements and technique, they are a gold mine. All five members of the band have training in classical music, jazz and/or blues, and they all take a hand in composing songs for the group. As a result, much of their work has the majestic feel you get from the great classical composers, such as Beethoven or Chopin, or from great adventure-movie sound tracks. They express it all in a deep, diverse musical vocabulary. ..... Their roots are in the 70’s and 80’s “golden age” of rock--Deep Purple, Black Sabbath, Queen, Metallica, Iron Maiden etc., but they add modern arrangements and dazzling musicianship to create a fresh, unique sound. Divine feminine energy infuses their compositions and arrangements. The simplest way to say it is that they have made metal unabashedly beautiful. Intentional or not, there is a political aspect to a band like this. In the midst of the forever debates over the place of women in our society, these women defy easy categorization. They dress like fairy princesses, while savagely wielding instruments built for men close to twice their size. They do it with absurd ease and confidence, rather than the histrionics and grimaces that a lot of male rockers engage in. We hear all the time that our society does not like powerful women. Don't tell that to their legions of fans, both men and women, who love them for their uncompromising attitude and sheer bad-assery."

Another thing Hiawatha G. They had babies and don't go to traditional home wife role. I know the drummer in Maximum The Hormone has a couple of kids and the drummer in Nemophila has 2 kids now. That following that "rebellion" against the traditional way to live in Japan. For us westerners it is not a big issue but for a Japanese woman it is.

Well, Maybe you must make a separation between "record label music" and "normal music". Two disclaimers, the names are only to distinguish them and english aren´t my native language, bear with it. All female bands are not a new thing, at least in Japan. I´m not by any means an expert in korean music. But all female bands are not an strange thing in Japan. One of the most famous metal bands in Japan is Show-Ya, founded in 1981 and still active. All of their members are in theirs latets 50, but they still rock on stage kzbin.info/www/bejne/oYirnK2wZa2hjqs This is on the "normal music" side. The equivalent of k-pop in Japan, start doing this almost two decades later. One of the first, if not the first one all-femala band in the J-Pop industry can be Zone in 1997 managed by Studio RunTime. Rock and metal have a really long history in Japan from the 80th, Bands like Show-ya or the most famous X-Japan are from those years. Babymetal is an "idol band", Lovebites are not. They come from another metal band calles Destrose (the bass and drummer). There´s really a lot of rock and metal bands in Japan, a lot of them all-female and some of them with a really long career. Take a look someday at Scandal, an all girls group from Osaka formed in 2006 and still active. Their music style is more on the rock-punk side.

Lovebites exceed everyone’s expectations, even diehard fans like me. Asami, the vocalist, was previously an RnB / Jazz singer, and was what Japanese call “chorus” (backing vocals). She has a phenomenal vocal range, unbelievable stamina and breath control, yet when she sings quieter sections (there are the odd one or two) she has a beautiful tone and a natural, unforced vibrato. Rock/metal are still alive, and the charge is being led by Japanese female groups. The woman on the right, with the wood effect guitar, only started to play guitar at the age of 18. OK she knew a bit a about music before as she went to collage playing piano, to get a masters. There is another where one of the guitarist did not pick up a guitar until 2016, Band Maid. I really recommend looking for a Japanese female black metal band and yes there is if I'm not mistaken it's called Gallhammer which I recommend by the way, but there are also more Japanese female metal bands like Destrose, Exist Trace, Aldious, Mary's Blood...
