When I first got into kpop it was really different to see men interact with each other so closely, not afraid to cross dress, and act very cutely. Probably because in the US we do have this culture of toxic masculinity and doing all of these things would be seen as “gay.” Although we have gotten more progressive with lgbtq+ rights, homophobia still exists at a large scale here. It was refreshing to see men either looking or portraying themselves more feminine bc I don’t see it often in western entertainment. I am also a big fan of bl anime, manga and webcomics LOLL and def think that this genre is so popular because they are stories that we don’t get to see in the mainstream - also they are mostly written by women and know exactly how to cater to their audiences as to what we want to see romantically between the characters 🤣

The idea of males dressing like females for the purposes of comedy (for example, not drag shows) happens across many cultures. I can think of Monty Python in Britain in the 1970s an example in western culture that has been criticized with a feminist lens. And although I found Monty Python hilarious in years past, one has to wonder why men dressing up like women is considered so funny and not the other way around. At the end of the day, femininity is looked at something that is somewhat ridiculous and something to make fun of. Masculinity is respected and above making fun of. It's not the idols themselves that would look at it this way, its cultural norms that are hard to process especially as teens.
