As a Central American native I was quite surprised by this episode. Glasswings are all over my backyard, and I always found them rather unremarkable compared to other flashier butterflies or the many way more flamboyant and exotic insects that creep around here. However, reading about the science of their camouflage does give me a newfound respect for the little critters.

They try so hard to blend in, and yet they still have the white-on-black mark at the edge of their wings that sticks out like a sore thumb. How does that even work? Why would you waste so much resources on that transparent wing if you're gonna advertise your presence anyway? Maybe the wings are to confuse the """predatory""" birds so they don't know what they're pecking at? Maybe the pattern is actually some form of camouflage, to break up it's shape? Maybe it's a vestigial trait that the butterfly could soon loose 100% to become even more transparent, but just not yet? Maybe the wings need to be hardened by the pigmented tips, like seagull wings? Maybe we just don't know yet?
