The reason the jet engine drive fails out of atmosphere is the same reason the ion drive needs a xenon tank on the craft. Even though the engines are perfectly counterbalanced, there needs to be an available "pool" of the resource on the ship. Because there is no part that can store IntakeAir, you cannot use this effect outside of the atmosphere. :( Edit: Well, you can a bit, you just showed that, but it sputters out and eventually dies entirely.

So I was testing around with the ion drives yesterday and apparently the nodes in the CAL editor can be dragged past the borders. So let me explain my horrible first sum up. In the editor, you can create several points, to edit the curve. By default, there are two points, one at the start and one at the end. When overclocking something, you go to both points and drag the little nodes against the borders of the editor, to achieve the maximum height of the curve. However I found out, that even though the nodes seem to stop at the wall and therefore going up by 90 degrees, this is not the case. The curve is affected by how much you drag the node past the border. This means that to achieve maximum thrust, you have to put the nodes as close to an alignment of 90 degrees as possible, because dragging the node past 90 degrees will drastically decrease the height of the curve. Once you realise this, you can really go crazy with the force of these things. I don’t know if this is maybe already well known, but I hope I was able to help someone with this.

overclocking the ion engine is a legit way to make a twin ion engine fighter
@guard130073 жыл бұрын
For the ion drive, you can't go "full throttle" because it's a parabolic curve that ends at zero at full throttle. Full throttle is the middle of the throttle, exactly 50% gives maximum thrust. Because a KAL-1000 controller can control another KAL-1000 controller, it may be possible to use a second controller to set the first's 50% play to your maximum throttle. I haven't tried this yet, but I want to.. but not at 50% play as I said here, at whatever % play gives 49 G's of acceleration. The reason for this is that I like to play with part G limits, which default to 50 G's for all parts, so I want to make something with fine-throttle control but maximum thrust capability.
@lorenzio53293 жыл бұрын
I habe tried this before, but it does not seem to work. I set the start position on the second controller to 0 and the end position to 0.5, so in theory the first controller should be at half throttle when the second one is at max. But for some reason the first one went up by the same amount as the second one. This was a bit frustrating, as a fully controllable kraken drive would be a lot easier to use. You could even have several controllers, where one eg only goes from 0 to 0.1. That way you could maybe adjust the max power via action groups for fine adjustments or low g landings.

Hey you can actually glitch the game to have more than 8-way symmetry, and if you use shift+x it can be any number, including primes. First you have to place down literally any part, like an octagonal strut, and only place 1. Next, put another octagonal strut or whatever on top of that original strut with whatever symmetry. Then, pick up the original octagonal strut and place it with symmetry too. Last, hover of the outer octagonal struts with the part you want with mega-symmetry and it will apply it.

7:27 if I had to guess, id say that the game calculates fuel consumption with a constant, and then multiplying it by some variable that depends on the thrust, and the result of that is the drain on resources, meaning that when the thrust limiter is negative, do is the variable from thrust, meaning that from the codes perspective it's not creating resources per se, it's more that it's draining a negative amount of the resource. End result is still creation of resources, but the game is just running it's usual fuel drain code with a negative multiplier it was never designed for. Just making a guess, so yknow... Could be entirely wrong, I've never seen KSPs code, and probably wouldn't understand the code even if I had

I. Am definitely going to make this when The Computer i play on works again. Its like an infinite power drive. Also, i though of something. What if you just used a structural system to set the docking ports so they cant move, and set some kind of system so that you can have both the docking ports at zero docking pull force or whatever, then have a system with action groups that allows you to increase the power of one port or the other to make it able to generate infinite thrust both forwards and backwards. That way, you dont have to pull a 180 to be able to thrust retrograde. you can speed up and slow down while you are facing one direction.

I see some people refer to docking port engines as warp drives, while they are reaction-less drives they aren't specifically warp drives. A warp drive works by compressing space in-front of a craft and expanding it in the back in nature we actually see galaxies move away from each other at super-luminal speeds due to dark energy expanding the space, we typically see these slightly slower galaxies moving away with this method just on the edge of our observable universe then once they cross that boundary they are moving FTL away from us red shifting into oblivion (both on scale of galaxies and ship it's not the object accelerating, but space warping around it by expanding/contracting the original velocity is preserved). Weather one could artificially create that and on the scale of ships is another thing entirely, but I do feel the docking port engine would actually be more similar to an EM drive or perhaps like MiTEE-1 which only works when your close enough to a planets electromagnetic field (eg low earth orbit) so basically only good for station keeping of cube sats if it works.

I’ve used the Kal control glitch a lot and the ion engine seems to work the best. I’ve gotten to over 20000gs (25ish minutes to light speed) using them. It took a lot of trial and error. You need to control both the throttle and thrust threw the controller for both engines (up and down) for the best results (and a little luck is required to get the maximum value in the over clocking of the engine). However, the craft becomes unstable if you don’t have enough reaction wheel force (RCS thrusters don’t work) or have everything very close to the center of mass. I made two versions in the end: one that got to just over 20000gs that had no part clipping and one that could go above 25000gs with part clipping. Nice video by the way!

7:24 I'm not familiar with the minutia of KSP's codebase but I'd wager that the function handling engine behavior was written with assumptions that thrust values would never be negative so weird negative thrust values aren't caught by sanity checking and as a result you get a garbage in/garbage out situation where the negative thrust value is resolved like a positive value and passed on to resource addition/removal functions which DO expect both positive and negative values (engines add negative values of fuel to a fuel tank, solar panels add positive values to a battery) so naturally you get negative resource consumption (or resource addition) in line with the resource consumption curve/function for that part. Honestly it's exploiting unintended behavior yielded by the really extreme thrust limitation values produced by those curve functions imparted by the KAL module but whether you'd consider it a cheat or not depends on who you're asking.
