CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Billy (Justin Henry) refuses to eat his dinner and eats ice cream instead against his father's (Dustin Hoffman) wishes.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Robert Benton's Oscar-winning adaptation of Avery Corman's bestseller takes on contemporary problems of divorce and shifting gender roles, as a jilted husband learns how to be a nurturing father. Manhattan housewife Joanna Kramer (Meryl Streep) walks out on her workaholic ad man husband Ted (Dustin Hoffman), leaving their young son Billy (Justin Henry) in Ted's less than capable hands. Through trial and error, Ted learns how to take care of Billy, devoting more energy to his family than to his work, and finally losing his high-powered job because of his new priorities. When Joanna returns with her own lucrative job and the intent to take custody of Billy, Ted finds employment that won't interfere with his paternal duties. Even though he proves that he can do it all, Joanna still wins in court. Joanna, however, rethinks her desires when she finally grasps how close father and son have become. Addressing the male side of the self-actualization question, previously explored from the female perspective in such 1970s movies as An Unmarried Woman (1978), Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore (1974), and The Turning Point (1977), Kramer focuses on Ted's evolution from absent parent to ideal father, as he learns to balance domestic and professional lives in the shifting late-1970s social landscape. Joanna's attempt to achieve the same, however, gets buried; only Streep's sensitive performance prevents Joanna from seeming an unsympathetic harridan. Critics praised the film's realistic depiction of Ted's travails, as well as the three lead actors' work; and audiences, perhaps facing the same questions of divorce and self-realization, turned it into a box-office smash. It went on to win five Oscars, including Best Picture, Best Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.

Fun fact: This entire scene was improvised. It wasn't in the script at all, and Dustin Hoffman and Justin Henry came up with it on the spot. The director, Robert Benton was so impressed that he kept it in the final film.

My understanding is that the scene was improv BUT they came up with the idea during rehearsals and the director was so impressed he added the scene into the film. I think it’s testament to the actors abilities that it feels so natural.

Well I'm terribly sorry to hear you were most likely a victim of abuse and didn't know it. I'm not saying a child doesn't need to be disciplined or told no sometimes, but a little psychology as opposed to the fear, fear, and more fear approach comes a long way, you know. Especially later in life. I'd love to see a sequel with the kid in his teenage years; I wonder what Mr. Kramer's strategy for raising an adolescent son would be. Given his exemplary parenting in this scene, the communication between him and his son would most likely be non-existent at that point as the boy would have developed a fear response to his father which could lead to him just keeping personal problems away from him... not healthy!

@@laracroftvideos no offense, but that is not necessarily abuse. I have a five-year-old nephew and he definitely pushes his parents buttons all the time. He literally has to have his name called more than five times before he realizes that his parents are talking with him. That’s not me saying he’s a bad kid, on the contrary. Children at that age typically are incapable of listening until there are consequences. It seems that we always learn lessons the hard way. Act like a brat and you’ll suffer the consequences. Actions have consequences. You don’t discipline your offspring the chances of them getting away with it increase and they won’t learn anything. Once that discipline is inherent in the child, they will usually think twice about doing it. I grew up with that look and immediately knew when I go to far. Because of that discipline when I was a teenager I would think twice before doing something. My group of teenage friends would do stupid stunts like push grocery carts into the middle of the road. I refused to do it because I knew that that was a stupid idea and would get in serious trouble for it. The other boys did not care, so what does that mean?

When kids do stuff like this, they’re testing their parents. This boy’s mom abandoned him so he’s checking “If I’m bad, will Dad leave me too?” He actually wants to get in trouble - he needs to know that his dad isn’t leaving him like his mother did.

And it was implied the reason Joanna left Ted was because Ted was apparently controlling his wife by having her stay at home and not let her have a life. But it could also be argued Ted barely noticed he had a wife or even a son either as he was too cooked up in his job.

Holding one's ground is indeed a good thing for a parent to do. But mocking the kid, throwing him around, and shouting at him is the parent losing self control and is definitely not what a parent should do. The movie is brutally honest about how hard it is to keep one's cool as a parent.

When this movie came out I was a similair age to the kid in this. I remember my mum going out on a girls night out to the local cinema to watch this movie. Just reminds me of part of my childhood . Later on I watched the movie as an adult and it’s a great film, intense, the arguments between him and his kid I relate to as being a parent , when the kid has the accident in the park etc etc. it’s a really good film.

Billy didn’t feel like eating his dinner because he was struggling with Joanna’s absence, it’s quite common with kids when something is upsetting them they don’t feel like eating their dinner at all. Ted should’ve really had a proper chat with Billy asking him what was wrong instead of just forcing him to eat his dinner and having a go at him for getting the ice cream out. But then he too was struggling because of having to balance with looking after Billy as a single parent and working at the same time.

Billy was acting out because he felt incredibly guilty, over his parents' divorce and blamed himself. In this scene, he's testing his dad, to see how far he can go; testing his boundaries so to speak. Then Ted acts out, after Billy crossed his boundaries, saying they hate each other; which is out of anger. After they apologize and make up, their new-found relationship blossoms.

@Gigi Ghiba You don't understand child psychology. The immense guilt he felt, because he thought he was the cause, for his mom leaving him. Now, he thinks his dad will leave him too, because he thinks he's a bad child; which he's not. Plus, Ted was so wrapped up in his career, he never really took the time, to spend with Billy. This is touched on, when they kiss and make up. So, try to understand the big picture.

@Gigi Ghiba I'm not justifying disobedience. You really don't understand Billy's psychology, why he's acting the way he does! It blows my mind, how everyone thinks that Billy is a bad child, because I understand him. I understand Ted. You don't. Take the time to understand the characters, instead of lashing out at those, who do! Ted's not a bad parent; just a lousy husband. Billy's not a bad child, so quit blaming him. There's a REASON why BOTH of them acted out!

@Gigi Ghiba Well, do you think that Ted was being responsible, when he resorted to profane name calling, on his son, after chucking him, on the bed? It's a learning process for both, to adjust to their new situations. Also, I still disagree, that Billy is disobedient. Ted wasn't all sunshine and roses, either.

When I watched Family Guy, I didn’t realize that the ice cream scene was a reference to this movie. 😂😂

I read that this wasn't the original scene; the two in this scene just completely improvised it, and it was so enjoyed by the director that he kept it.
