I am almost sure the captain was added to the classic games as comedic relief; Kratos being cruel was oftentimes portrayed in a morbidly humoristic way. To see them take that gag and use it to reflect on how the character feels now that he has matured, along with the audience, Santa Monica as a studio, and even the industry itself, is beyond surreal, but also satisfying.
@LarryBonson

I like it when it was a gag some times it's not good to ruin past memories.
@KopitioBozynski

There was no "maturing" that was done let alone needed to be done. It's a videogame about a fictional character in a flanderized setting and not some work of philosophy. If anything the gaming industry has regressed in maturity considering a game like the original God of War wouldn't even be allowed to exist today without a horde of pearl clutchers screeching for it's cancellation.

I always felt like it was due to Kratos being Spartan who would expect the captain to fight/remain until the end. But he panicked putting his crew at risk and making Kratos’s job harder than it would have been otherwise.

@KopitioBozynski There's consequences to framing a story for a young audience with no reflection on the cruelty of its charcaters. People like you grow up without questioning their lack of empathy thinking that shits normal, you're not normal touch grass.

It was passable as humor for the time, and the players were mostly not yet adults, despite the rating. I guess the thing i like the most about the franchise is that the games matched the interests of the audience, back then when we were all in edgy phase, and now when we are more mature.

Yeah feel it was a missed opportunity to go further into his actions against the captain. Some lines of dialogue among the lines of “to be so casually cruel not just once but multiple times I.. for all my anger against the gods I treated their subjects no better. This man was no warrior or beast, he was a man who was treated as nothing by a god. Much like my wife and daughter were treated as nothing by Ares.”

@@Ch_aIN_saW._Men22 it sounds weird then that you seem like it's all new to you that they acknowledge previous games before Kratos went to the Norse realm. Cause the Norse saga games have been acknowledging what Kratos did in his past life. It was even like recurring major obstacles in Kratos's quest to become a better person. If you played all the games then it should not be weird to you that they acknowledged what Kratos did in the Greece saga. Cause it's actually a vocal point for Kratos' character development.

I love how the achievement is just: "You again" It harkens back to the old games. Kratos met this boat captain not once but 3 seperate times. The first when he condemned the captain to his death, the second when he was falling into the underworld for the first time, and the last when he was summoned during his fight with the barbarian king. Each time incredulously remarking that it was Kratos again.

This video and scene perfectly demonstrates why David Jaffe's comments on the new and in the Santa Monica is going is this stupid. He said he don't want the developers pushing their life experiences on his character, but this isn't anyone's life experiences. This is a grown man owning up to the fact that he was just an asshole and he needed to be better. They took a scene that Jaffe used for an earlier game as a joke I made it a point of self-reflection. The boat captain popped up all three games just to die again and again and it was hilarious, but if you think about what you did in real world logic it was a really messed up thing to do. To be a grown man and his like late forties and have that opinion is just wanting to have this power fantasy is just crazy.

Then, some boring random enemies popped up on the way, Mimir went "hold up, brother, there's enemies, lets continue this later" - "Very well". After they were beaten, they didnt continue the story. I like how the game bridges travel times with dialogue, but a lot of the time, it meant I had to row the boat or steer the sleigh in circles until they finally finished. Otherwise, they'd break up in the middle of it. Yes, they often pick up the dialogue again later, but sometimes they don't.

I know a lot of people criticize God of War: Ragnarok for various things, such as throwing some black people into freaking *Norse* Mythology just to virtue signal and all, but I do think that little moments like this are actually good things. I mean, as badass as Kratos was in the past, he was pretty much just a screaming angry murder man, who was pretty justified in seeking his revenger, but he was still quite the asshole. I just think that while Kratos shouldn't spend all his time regretting the things he did in the past, having him acknowledge his mistakes every now and then is perfectly fine.

They should've talked about the Poseidon Princess, that is in my opinion, the cruelest death caused by Kratos in God of War 3, and arguably in the whole series. That's the only death that genuinely disturbed me, and I felt so bad for her.

The princess' death, while utterly cruel, still served some purpose for Kratos. It's also the same with the translators in the Fate's temple, Icarus, King Midas and the like but the boat captain's death has in no way would help Kratos at all. Others died for his benefit but this one got killed not out of need but just pure malice in Kratos' part and that's why Kratos couldn't forget him.
@yokgor4675

@@silenthero2795 Not the same with the translators, Icarus, and King Midas. They all were the only ones that possesses certain abilities that Kratos needs. Kratos could’ve used anyone or anything to jam that gate, but he chose the only person who was helpless and unable to defend herself inside Poseidon’s chamber to be the sacrifice, it is an entirely optional choice for him to kill her, and he chose it.
@silenthero2795
@silenthero2795 Жыл бұрын
@@yokgor4675 I always thought the princess was needed for that specific part because surely, you cannot jam those huge gears by just her body alone. It's also the same in Pandora's temple where you sacrifice a soldier when Kratos can just throw a random mindless enemy inside the cage. There's always some sort of sacrifice in these games but even if it was true that Kratos could just jam the gears with anything else, him killing the boat captain still gives him no benefit whereas he still benefited with that princess' death, cruel and needless it may be.
@yokgor4675

@@silenthero2795 You confused me at your first sentence. You think the princess is needed in that specific part, and then you said surely her body can’t jam those gears? Never mind that…I get your ultimate point. But there’s another thing I disagree is that it’s the same with the soldier being sacrificed in Pandora’s temple. The sacrifice in Pandora Temple probably requires a live human, a mindless undead most likely wouldn’t sufficed, and the soldier is the only human alive besides Kratos. Here with the jamming of the gate’s gear, the solution is much more simpler, you just need to find a thing to jam it, simple physics, no sacrificing to the supernatural stuff needed. The circumstances is much different. Kratos could totally find some mindless creatures or something hard to jam it. Still think it is totally unnecessary for him to kill her. I get that the boat Captain is the more famous victim of Kratos, but can we pls at least give her an honourable mention or something? The girl probably spent her entire life getting abused by Poseidon, and eventually died with fear while begging Kratos to not leave her, that shit sad bruh

I love that they take a recurring gag in the original trilogy and then realized how fucked up it actually was that Kratos could have just saved with one simple movement of his arm, it always bothered me when he did those kinds of things in the original trilogy because they just felt edgy and only detracted from the sympathy we were feeling for the character when he wasn't yet a legitimate monster like in GOW 3, to see them use this not with shame but to further develop Kratos Character just puts a smile on my face

I've said it in another video, but I'd say it again: this feels like the writers reminding people as spelled-out as they can be artistic about it, that Kratos' past depravity and the negative retrospective outlook that people have upon it, both within the media and the audience/players themselves, was UNLIKELY misguided or oversimplified. There's just an alarmingly rampant discourse trying to give "depth" to Kratos' past self and stories that lean upon the conclusion that what he became and did were justified or within reasonable stretches.

I think Ragnarok was a masterpiece. It took all the great aspects of the original ones and made almost all of them genuinely better, while turning what (according to the original game director) was designed to be a completely mindless character into an actual character of good value and writing. Nevertheless…. I do feel like Valhalla did practically nothing original. Kratos is suddenly not just “a changed man” that went from a complete monster to doing the right thing and even listening to others (Mimir in particular), but the most self-aware open and talkative guy in the North. Still, it is not neccesarily the problem, but it does contribute to all the rest of the Valhalla story and dialogue being served rather as a “ 100% fan service”, while in fact it is just the references, much worse and less charasmatic dialogue and hints of romance club. All of it is not a problem if it is driven by the story instead of merely excused by it + I do believe despite he has evidently changed as a character he feels way to far from himself and just soft in the DLC. I don’t know how much time did the writing team have and some parts of the story are good (Tyr, general idea), but the boat captain story just feels completely off. He killed a ton more innocent people including Elysium souls, while captain was a joke that in my opinion did not need reinterpretation For the very least if he fought his final self it would be more climactic than just self-aware talk

Do they ever reference the innocent woman that was killed by Kratos by forcing her to hold up a mechanism to open a door before her body crushed to a pulp. While the boat captain scenes was framed as morbidly comedic I remember that specific act made many players think Kratos went to far. It was nothing funny about it, it was just pure cruelty.

Ugh, these new Santa Monica writers have no idea who GoW1 Kratos was. And maybe also have no idea how depression works. GoW1 Kratos was a broken dude, who had only ONE goal keeping him from suicide. The world also hated him, even after serving the gods for 10 years (remember that first civilian you meet on the ship who says “I would rather die than be saved by you!”). Ragnarok’s writers say it “would have cost Kratos nothing” to show the boat captain mercy. Yeah? Well, it also cost nothing to just let him die and get the key. Because that’s what happens when you’re depressed: you have tunnel vision for the ONE thing that might pull you out of it, and have little regard for everything else. That’s the point. “Morality” isn’t a priority for a guy who’s been shunned by the world. The boat captain could have lived or died, and Kratos would still have been the same miserable, broken soul that he was. So why wouldn’t Kratos just do what was easier / more pertinent to his immediate goal? This is why it’s idiotic to make such a big deal out of his death the way Ragnarok does. You know you’ve drastically misunderstood something when you try to turn a comic relief character into some kind of martyr.
@silenthero2795
@silenthero2795 Жыл бұрын
The whole world doesn't actually hate him, just his enemies. Kratos is well respected in Sparta, even in Olympus as he was made a champion more than once. The oracle of Delphi, Orkos (son of Ares), the King of Sparta and the whole of Sparta held great respect for Kratos. Even if his own enemies (Theseus, Perseus or Hercules) say derisive things about him, they still acknowledge Kratos' accomplishments. His depression stems from his blind rage being manipulated by the gods to their benefit, not that everyone hates him as if he's some sort of outcast. The first civilian you meet is an Athenian, Sparta's enemy at the time, so he would rather die than be saved by an enemy. Another example is when Kratos unknowingly killed his own soldier back in GoW2 and still that soldier didn't blame him as he understood both were manipulated to kill each other. If someone misunderstood something then you may need to look back on the series as you're missing some crucial points about Kratos.

I understand why people like this, but come on, this game has Kratos apologising for everything he did in the OG games, it's like an indirect way of the writers telling the fans that they hate the OG trilogy. They even put in kratos apologizing for what he did to this captain, yeah, it was bad, but I feel like they're making that moment into a much bigger deal then it was. They do not need to make kratos apologize for literally everything he did in the OG trilogy.
