A video for beginner and advanced Krav Maga practitioners. Ron Rotem and myself take a few of the most known Krav Maga techniques for defending against knife and put them in context to formulate a game-plan that is based on principles rather than techniques.

Watched about 50 of these knife attack defenses, and yours is probably one of the best because it's the most practical. Distance, violent counter strikes and escape are probably your only valid options

I learned the "bursting" technique on my own against knife attacks like this. In Krav Maga, bursting is using a block AND a strike at the same time especially against close-in frontal knife attack threats.

@@RonEngelmanKM Yes sir I know how useful martial arts krav Maga is but there is no good krav maga academy in our country and although there is a lot of fish in that academy so I have benefited from your online krav maga class.

Very good demonstration but I would not recommend grabbing the knife like that unless you have a protection west (i.e. military etc). A civilian should probably just push forward or use a safer disarm technique. My 2 cents.

And of course--never grab the actual knife itself from the knife hand first to try to disarm it. You will be stabbed every time. Do the grab in the area of the arm of the knife hand away from the knife first, and then, only after you control the knife arm of the attacker, try a disarm of the knife (like you would do in Krav Maga style gun disarm technique).

The single arm block is unsafe. Even with a bend in the arm the knife can easily slip around and under the elbow to stab you in the heart. Hence you best stop that by checking and clearing his arm with your right behind or in front of your left [like an x block or kwan sau (bong sau/tarn sau)] and step left to his flank. Your wrapping technique will often suffer more than superficial damage as he retracts, ripping back into your torso. Against surprise attacks, versus bigger &/or stronger opponents, this technique has several more critical errors that will fail you. Blocking wrist to wrist allows for no margin for error and even when accurately aimed he can easily put the point of the weapon down into your arm. Block forearm to forearm; Not getting offline and relying on force on force. You presume that you will have enough reactive speed, space and time, strength and power to move your whole body forward and block, stop and push back a powerful surprise stab. This is delusional. Even if you are not static a powerful downwards stab will blast through your "block hit" and get you. So get out of the way too, stepping and shifting either left [outside his right arm] or right [inside]... and turn your torso and deflect his arm to the outside or inside. This is the 3 part insurance policy. You can still stick to his arm while yielding, deflecting his arm; The punch to the head... just no. Sure, if you're Mr.Martial Arts Master, with highly conditioned hands and a very powerful punch you can get good stun effect without breaking your hand... maybe... but smaller, weaker people, less highly trained? Punch will be quite ineffective and hurt the hand, which you need for the rest of the defence. Use a "tiger claw" palm instead, palm heel on chin, fingers in the eyes. This works much better. You can still get fighters' beloved KO effect but add 5 digits going for both eyes. It stuns and blinds your man even at very close range where you say you can't punch. Anyway, never heard of uppercuts? Chin jabs? Knees to the body. You Krav guys love your knees to the body! Can be effective, can also have no effect at all vs a hyped up attacker. Stomp through his knee or ankle. That will drop anybody. The grab of the wrist and neck pull down. Low percentage probabilities. Pulling the neck down is very easily resisted. Grabbing the back of the head is easily slipped off. Grabbing the wrist and retaining it... good luck! You'd need it. He can easily break your grip. If you can reach the back of his neck you should be chopping him in the neck. Instead of relying on knees so much you need to train very fast powerful arm strikes and mauling [ripping, gouging etc.] the throat, neck and eyes, flowing like an enraged alley cat. So there you go. Your strategy is mostly sound but your technique and training method suck criminally hard.

No, Krav Maga is all about instincts, and people raise their arms during a stabbing. It works if you have the correct angle. You need to hit with the other hand or the attack will come again and again. This is one technique that has been proven many times, and it’s very solid. Instructor myself btw.

Never wrap over the top on a knife attack. Attacker can pull through and cut you. Always wrap from underneath.

Thanks for watching my video. When the attack is coming from below, you wrap from underneath. When the attack is overhead this is not possible and you must wrap from above.

Static and cooperative drills... just no. It's why most martial arts are trained wrong and get a justifiably bad rep. It's just for beginners 1st learning the technique. You need freeform uncooperative resistant sparring to learn to read the opponent, distance, timing etc., realistically apply the tech and thus test if it works. This technique doesn't work well. You'd know that if you actually did proper uncooperative training. Knowing in advance that he will do overhead icepick stab is quite unrealistic. God forbid he fakes you out and stabs below your arm instead.

I can only hope you comprehend that this video is intended as a detailed breakdown of technique and not a sparring session. The idea of this video is to teach the concepts. It's not aimed at showcasing how fast and tough we are. This point seems to be lost on some people. In terms of making the assumption Ron Rotem and myself don't know what it's like to train at full force... as you millennials say LOL.
