It's crazy to learn how these stories sometimes come together. The fact that one of the best Spider-Man stories ever, and THE best Kraven story ever, wasn't even originally conceived as a story about Spider-Man or Kraven, just blows my mind.

That scene was devastatingly tragic and before that after the Spider-Man and Vermin fight, his expression was just heartbreaking and the whole scenes before that it seems like he just want to break down and just cry but he was trying to stay strong in his manner. I mean if I'm being honest I think Kraven the Hunter had a lot to live for and he shouldn't have killed himself because he just couldn't cope.

The fact that this story hasn't been adapted in any other form of media is downright insane to me. Hopefully, Insomiac will be able to do Kraven justice in their next Spider-Man game if they do decide to tell that story.

Judging from the trailer, Kraven will most likely be the initial Villian, and after defeating him it will shift to Venom. Similair to Mr Negative being the first Villian of the first game but it then shifts to Doc Ock

@@KianOntong13 I doubt it because we’ve yet to see Kraven in any of the trailer footage only Venom, maybe Venom could be the initial villain later revealing that Kraven is the real villain. Similar to how Mr. Negative was shown in all the promo footage of the fight on top of the building with the mystery sinister 6ix villain (later revealing in the game) it was Otto Octavious who was the main antagonist the whole time.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson has already been cast as Kraven in an upcoming Sony movie. He will be in the Venom/Morbius universe rather than the MCU.

I'm hating death doesn't matter in comics. Kraven, Norman and even Doc Ock should stay dead to make their stories more relevant without some convoluted excuse on their return. Kravens Last Hunt is a great example of how to make a fantastic story with steaks and real pecos!

Kraven is fortunately back to canonically being dead (and having been dead). (His resurrected appearances were retconned as a clone.) But I definitely agree, Norman being alive sucks imo and I don't think anything I've read since his resurrection has been worth it. And having fucking clones of dead villains running around is also far from my favourite thing.

Without consquences Spider-man's reason for being is pointless. Everyone who died in Spider-man should remain dead as "with great power comes great responsibility". All these villains and heros resurecting make Spider-man's holding back and less than lethal approach pointless. Same with Batman, it makes Deadpool more realistic as he knows death isn't final in the comics.

J. M. DeMatteis is for Spider man villains what Paul Dini and Bruce Timm were for the Batman rogues. Not only he understants Spider man as character but also knows how to develop his relationship with his villain, making them into more interesting and complex antagonists, as showed in stories like this and Best of Enemies (which develops the friendship/rivalry between Peter and Harry).

Dematties is the best spider-man writer imo. He wrote both my favorite stories (Child Within, KLH, Best of the Enemies and Soul of the Hunter) and my favorite run (Spectacular #178-200) of the character.

Kraven has been one of my favourite characters in the history of Marvel Comics and this story really captures a lot of the reasons why he is my favourite Spidey rogue. This story portrays Kraven as a disillusioned old hunter and the emphasis on his upbringing and his traumatic childhood added so much depth to his character. Vermin who's the secondary antagonist in this story is D List character who can be done terribly if poorly handled but is instead portrayed as a lost man trying to find his original identity out and genuinely has no clue what's happening to him. It's easily one of the best comics to be ever published and is a must read for almost every Spidey Fan

When this story was published I was in high-school. Zeck's covers were slightly traumatizing and the entire tone and layering of the story left young me confused. I knew it was important but didn't have the life experience to understand why. All these years later I can appreciate, with pride, the heart of the story.

I'm actually going to make the argument that "The Death of Jean Dewolff" was the darkest Spider-Man storyline. Yes, Kraven's Last Hunt had a very dark atmosphere and some disturbing moments, but Death Of Jean Dewolff pushed Spider-Man's emotions, sanity and morality to their brink. Daredevil had to stop Spider-Man from killing the Sin Eater and years later, Spider-Man saw the results of his actions when he saw a permanently crippled Stan Carter in prison due to be beating he gave him months earlier.

I read that story on the 2000's and it felt pretty shocking even at the time without feeling cheap or forced. Specially the part where Spidey investigates Jean's room and finds all the fangirl things she has for him, basically telling that she loves him. I agree with you.

I almost agree with you but there's one caveat. When Sin Eater returns and is revealed to be "crippled," that same storyline later establishes his handicaps were psychosomatic, i.e. "in his head." It would have been bold if his injuries from Spider-Man undeniably caused his handicap but the story tries to clear the "moral conscience" of those actions by making it a psychological issue. This takes a lot of the "bite" out of that story for me because it turns out Spider-Man beating him within an inch of his life had no "real" consequences.

And I think an adaptation would be the perfect follow-up to NWH, with Peter realizing how much he still has to live for while also showing why redefining Spider-Man is a needless endeavor. When I tell this to friends who haven’t read this comic, they respond with, “Kraven? Really?” Which is another good reason, honestly.

Absolutely agree. Many unfairly hate DeMatteis' work on Spider-Man, saying it's too edgy. But I think the dark and depressing tone in the DeMatteis stories is the perfect continuation and insight into the older Spider-Man stories from the Jerry Conway years. And, let's be honest, Spider-Man comics J.M. DeMatteis are not good at all for dark and edgy. They are good because DeMatteis is just a great and talented author with a VERY good style and vocabulary.

I remember reading this book as a freshman in middle school. I soon realised that this was not something I should have been reading as a kid. It kinda opened up my eyes to how good, and also mature, comics could be. I remember the art being dark and violent, and it kinda traumatised me. I loved every page of it.

This storyline was awesome and was the highlight of my spiderman / comic collecting days. Dark and gloomy storytelling and the cover work was top notch, so good. Kravens end was kinda shocking for my childhood self. I miss this era of my life, it was a very fun time to be a kid.

Tbh I always felt like The Other was the darkest Spidey story (Which doesn't necessarily mean it's good) Maybe it's because seeing Spider-Man being brutality beaten and having an eye ripped off by Morlun then seeing him with an extremely deformed face was quite a shock as a kid Either way, great video. I feel like they will do a variation of this in the next trilogy. The venom symbiote is in the MCU now and you already it will attach itself to Peter. So we have the black suit , and Aaron Taylor Johnson (formally known as Quicksilver) has been cast to play Kraven the hunter. Vermin was the first villain of Spiderman's I was introduced to on the playground blacktop in 3-4th grade. "Child within" storyline from Spectacular Spider Man. Wish he got more respect.

If anyone's still reading new comments and thinking about "why hasn't there been an adaptation of this?", the MCU have had Kraven in their periphery for some time. Sony's plan B for No Way Home (in case they couldn't secure enough folks for the whole multiverse crossover plot) involved Kraven as the main villain chasing down Spidey; might still show up in the future :O

i recently read this and I don't understand how many walked out of this book claiming it's a badass story or that Kraven "won", much akin to how people would say the Joker "won" in The Dark Knight movie or even in comics such as "Death in the Family" and "Killing Joke". Much like this video showed, this story was a great showing of why Peter is Spider-Man and not the other way around; much like how Kraven thought he was a "better" Spider-Man then Peter showed that by actually trying to help Vermain and taking a beating by him is what truly makes HIM the superior Spider-Man, not Kraven. Peter can easily do what Kraven did if he wanted to but chooses not to, that's why Kraven hype fixates on how Peter needed help from Cap to beat Vermain the first time, like a mad man trying so hard to convince himself that he is right, much like some of the reactions I saw to the comic lol. This was a fantastic Spider-Man story and I always think the best Spidey stories are the ones that solidify Peter's character over anything else. Great video as always!

this just made me realize batman basically went thru the same thing in 2 arcs; the going sane arc (the buried for a few weeks part) and knightfall (the part where he’s put out of commission in favor a darker, edgier alternative)

I'd give it a high recommend. Kraven's Last Hunt introduces some really great story telling and character depth the comics really haven't tried since. I think Marvel are afraid to adapt Kraven's Last Hunt because the original story got complaints about trying to "glorify suicide" which disturbed the writer so much they actually made a follow-up story in which Kraven's Soul couldn't rest because of the manner in which he died, thus Peter had to face Kraven once more and defeat him to finally allow him to pass on. That is where Kraven's story should have ended but alas he was bought back to life again...

I'm really glad they went with this as the framework for Kraven's appearance in Spider-Man 2 (PS5). Even if retooled to fit the preexisting story going on, it allows for a wider net of story possibilities and certain things that happen in that game likely would NOT have happened without Kraven's influence.

when Kraven looks at his family photo towards the end an says "They say my mother was insane." idk why but his parents in the pic reminds me of Bruce Waynes photo. especially considering that in an alternate story where bruces dad is batman an his mom went insane an became the joker. but rather than kraven dying the way bruce did he instead kills himself.

Between the symbiote suit (Or Venom at the very least) and it featuring Kraven, I wonder if the next Spiderman PS5 game will base elements of it's story off this? Might be a bit dark and you'd have to juggle Miles around quite a bit for it to make any sense but think it'd be an interesting turn.
