Spider-Man 2099 and Doom 2099 were the best titles of the line. It’s clear that the majority of creativity and imagination went into those Books. Peter David made Miguel the exact opposite of Peter, and that’s why he worked. He was a breath of fresh air, long before there was a whole Spider “ Family “. It’s telling that Miguel is the only classic 2099 character to still be used and appear in outside media today at all. Ironically, the 2099 universe’s fate was a precursor to the fate of the ultimate universe: heroes just killed off unceremoniously in an event that changed the landscape of the books in a negative/ polarizing way, with only the Spider-Man character really coming out with their popularity intact; though many fans claim that their current adventures aren’t as great as what came before. It’ll be fun to revisit the world when the new Spider-Man 2099 exodus miniseries starts next week. It’s supposed to introduce a whole bunch of new characters. Maybe this exactly the resurgence the concept needs. Going forward, it might work best in a format similar to the Batman the white knight comics.

Moore's first 25 issues of X-Men 2099 is really tight. It's a great story with a building plot that culminates in a dramatic finish. It's so rare today to have any story arc last more than 6 or 12 issues at most. Long been a favorite of mine.

Well that's because of 2 things. One spider man is their most popular character. And brand name alone can carry a book. And 2 unlike most other characters hes more ingrained into the universe Better. A kid in the early 2000, And employee To the big corporation villain Get it been powered because of sliced genetics, Kid of the 1920s Is gaining his power through A magical spider Tablet. Meanwhile the rest of the characters were either too radical or not radical enough put into these settings where they were good but not interesting. I mean in the world of noir spider men was really the only one with powers And a cool looking outfit. 299 everyone else had to deal with the shifting status quo more so than Miguel had to. Same thing for the ultimate universe since everyone else got screwed over while Michael Brian bendes just turned it into his little fan fiction universe.

what I do find interesting is Peter David originally intended for the CEO of alchemax to be Peter Parker. An idea that he didn't get to fully explore until Spider-Man Edge of Time. I think the reason Marvel has pretty much quietly killed off the 2099 era is because we're only 77 years away from the actual 2099 in the real world. At the end of a previous Spider-Man Arc Peter tries to help Miguel get back to his own time, only to discover that the future he was from no longer exist. this was something that DC managed to avoid with Batman Beyond by simply not giving an exact year.
@immersivecomics1603
@immersivecomics1603 2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the best way to handle 2099 is to maybe say that after some great cataclysm the world came to near end and allowed companies like Alcamex to take over. And this is 2099 years after it. Like it reset the year in a sort of BC AD thing. That way it can always remain as a possible future but not necessarily a year we’re close to

One fun theory I always enjoyed about Ravage 2099 was the idea he was one of the children/grandchildren of an alternate version of Killraven, a character created by Roy Thomas in the 70s for a series that took place in the same universe as War of the Worlds, which was later confirmed to take place in the same universe as the original Guardians of the Galaxy. 8:14 The concept of the Thorites was expanded MUCH further in Punisher and Ravage- it wasn't merely a cult that celebrated Thor, but a mainstream religion in the vein of Catholicism, with the Aesir like Hela becoming sainted role models (Tiana from Ravage sought strength from Hela, and Jake Gallows' brother was named after Baldur). It was actually a pretty nuanced depiction of Thor's unusual impact on the Marvel Universe... which is why I hated the Thorites' depiction in the recent 2099 One-Shots as a roving band of Viking murderhobos. Not only is it incredibly generic, but it begs the question why, in a world where human life is worth less than a business suit, they hadn't just been wiped out or rounded up for human testing by the MegaCorps.

I read Spider-Man, X-Men, Punisher, and Ravage 2099 as a kid for about a year and a half. After awhile I decided to pare down and dropped those titles. Thanks for the video as I wasn't aware of anything that had gone on after I dropped the titles.

Really liked the vid Owen,good job.No wonder I don't remember this series,8 issue run ??? Some of that art was tough to look at and the F.F. uniforms were DREADFUL. LOL. I remember the PEREZ & BUSIEK run on the Avengers from 1998 tho,it was GREAT !!! Perez's art was TOP-NOTCH.Busiek's writing was on point too.

I loved all the 2099 books. You are awesome! I was reading some of my old issues and came across one of my favorites Mutant X the Havok spin off from the late 90s to 2000s and I was looking for a good video that tells the whole story cause I am missing a few issues anyway I could not find anything most of my searchs lead to the TV show that has nothing to do with the comic. I love how you tell what happened and thought when you have time I would ask you to make a video if that interests you. Either I am a fan keep doing what you are doing!

I'm curious if you'd tackle talking about the short lived MC2 line as well. That was series of books that I think deserves more attention. Spider-girl, Wild Thing, Dark Devil, J2, A Next, The Buzz, Fantastic Five; and all of it overseen by Tom Defalco.

I got full runs of X-men 2009, X-Nation 2099, and 2099 World of Tomorrow. And the Manfest Destiny one shot that finishes everything off. I really liked the 2099 line. Sure it had it's misfires, but it was pretty enjoyable to read.

Warren Ellis is usually a good writer, seeing his direction for 2099 explains why no one was talking about 2099 into the late 90s. I remember my friends and I talking about spider-man & x-men.

2099 was by far the most exciting new thing to come out that fall! I enjoyed the early issues I read. I was starting college and didn't have extra money- but I had good dorm mates! Will worked at Kindo's and made me a dope Doom 2099 poster with his Muse of Fire Shakespearean quote

I love the look of early 2099. Especially the Rick Leonardi art on Spider man 2099. The line had its issues as it was a bit edgy but I love the cyberpunk aspects and the world. Doom 2099 made the whole thing worth it, it's amazing and X men wasn't terrible although I've read only 15 issues. I wish they had done more original characters outside of the legacy stuff. They had a great world but needed stronger heroes to leave a mark I feel. A shame none of the efforts to resist 2099 have turned out well, they just couldn't recapture the feel of the original line except for Manifest Destiny. I really like how it ties things up.

Great job! I read most all of the 2099 comics from Spiderman 2099 #1 to Manifest Destiny. Even collected the "world of tomorrow" comics. Definitely one of the more interesting takes of the 1990s, which weren't the best years for Marvel or comics in general. Thanks for this stroll down memory lane.

Awesome video as always. Ever since I was a kid I have been highly fascinated with the 2099 series, specifically Spider-Man 2099. In some ways I actually liked it more than Peter Parker Spider-Man as the 2099 setting gave me both a Spider-Man and that futuristic setting which appealed to my sci-fi enjoyment. In fact, as long as Amazon isn't lying to me, a Spider-Man 2099 omnibus is set to release October 25th of this year. I can honestly say I'm here for it.

If it wasn't because of the bankruptcy I don't think the imprint would've ended that shortly, but for what I've heard here this line sounds more interesting than the Ultimate line, not everyone was an ass for the sake of it and its end wasn't as unnecesarily brutal, I think it was a nice sendoff for what is worth.

In terms of tokenized characters, Miguel is probably my favourite closely followed by She-Hulk. For anyone who missed out, Marvel are releasing an omnibus that collects the whole Spidey 2099 run along with the Fall of the Hammer event. Personally I stopped giving Marvel and DC my money a while ago but I don't begrudge anyone who stills wants to check out good runs in omni format

A few years back I went to a yard sale in the middle of butt fuck nowhere. It was like a trailer park near a swamp in the middle of the Illinois country. Anyways, at one of the houses, there was a box shoved under the table but had the top open. Apparently it was full of old 90s comics and were put into sleeves. They were mostly xmen, uncanny, force, and 5 issues I found in shiney covers xmen 2099. The dude wanted 4 bucks per issue and there was like 60 in there. I just said I'll give you 20 and I got a deal. I still havent opened those men 2099 books, though. They must be special with their weird covers and I dont want to damage them by accident
