It's 100 years since the Bolsheviks stormed the Winter Palace in St Petersburg - one of the key events in the Russian Revolution.
The anniversary was a day of pomp and ceremony during Soviet times.
But these days Russians are less sure what to think.
Even Russian President Vladimir Putin seems ambivalent about the centennial.
Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from St Petersburg, Russia.

Yeah,, its free to eat so you die,,, yes i agree with you ,,there are a small group of people who have alot and those who have nothing ,, In the "free" world we found it natural that people die cause they have no money for healthcare or food ,,As we found it natural that people lives on the streets ,, and are depended on charities from those who eats ALOT ...that is called capitalism !

"Critisism and struggle are more important than "accomplishment"...even if nothing is produced beyond words and dreams, these will come to be a historical example and help others move ahead. We worked for that time and for the future." (Alexandra Kollontai, Soviet Ambassador to Norway; 1918) The October Revolution was a statement to the world. There are those among us who believe that human dignity, freedom and equality are not impossible, and intend to fight for it to the last. Despite everything, this is still true today.

I guess am also glad Putin didn't put out an official version of the event so that Russians and other people of the former USSR can discuss that part of their shared history.

@Henbot

Believe what a good idea? Communism (that never occurred because communism is when all states go whilst socialism is the step before)? or USSR? It could of been better without Stalin. It did actually give almost everyone a job-- Roma and all sorts got jobs. USSR was more equal then America and had none of the Jim Crow and segregation. Rural areas were alive with people and even elderly have said how they are more lonely now in the supposedly better capitalist country. Living alone and without neighbors in communities that roared alive under USSR. Elderly who say with conviction how the USSR was better. They brought about universal healthcare which America cant even do. USSR also miles ahead of the US in space. Nowadays all the usage of Nasa who explore and use Rovers or satellites etc was pioneered by Russia because they calculated it too costly not to keep sending crews of astronaughts into space. It had potential and Putin Russia is not better and far more rancid and worse. If Lenin was still alive he would do another revolution. Putin is not better, not in the slightest-- especially with all the racism, misogyny and sexism rampant and placed now into the culture. A massive counter revolution took place after Lenin died. USSR managed to erode discrimination within it culture and diminishthe horrendously reactionary and fascist Orthodox whilst Putin strengthen them. Putin Russia is far more fascistic then USSR ever was.
