As a Syrian, whose grandfathers fought with the Ottomans, I see this revolt as a curse, the main reason of it was that nationalism overshadowed our religious values. for years, we achieved glory not because we were Arabs, but because we were Muslims believing in Brotherhood between us despite racial differences, thats why Turks were ruled by Arabs and Arabs were ruled by turks, Islam united us and made us the greatest, once nationalism came in, we immediately collapsed.

Contrary to the misconceptions, Ottomans didn't see themselves as solely inheritors of Persians or Romans or even inheritors of Turkic culture. There are some points that are missed. Regarding the bedouins, up until the ending decades of the 19th century they were essentially ungoverned and so untaxed. After the reforms the Ottomans decided to start governing them which meant imposition of heavy taxation and corrupt administrators. This alone had significantly contributed to their resentment. As the new governing infrastructure was based on the Hejaz railway it was especially hated. Regarding the rural Arabs in the Levant region, the reforms brought them almost nothing creating an extremely feudal society with absentee lanlords (who frequently were christians) owning entire towns while living in Beirut or Istanbul. The reforms strengthened the rich merchants who became said landlords. The levantine arabs didn't joined the revolt but were apathetic to both sides.

When I went to Turkey in 2016, our tour guide blamed this all on the British, claiming that the Arabs loved being under Ottoman rule until Lawrence of Arabia manipulated them into backstabbing the Turks.
@Batuhanify10 ай бұрын
Tour guides are not historians and, sadly, often study a single narrative to then relay to the tourists. Not to mention Turkish State has adopted a policy of 'washing their hands off everything' with, not really a revisionist, but omittal type of history. You'll see a lot of Turks being rather misinformed about their own history because of this consequently. Whilst good parts are told, even the neutral parts of the history are often omitted unless one takes the pains to research it. Studying Ottoman History in high school is funny because of this, since it is very.. frontloaded so to speak.

The maker of this video forgot to mention other factors for the Arab revolt against the Ottoman Empire which is the forced conscription of young Arab men during the balkan wars and WW1 and the high death rate of Arab soldiers during that time as what is known as “safer barlek” and also the famine that hit Syria and Lebanon during WW1 that caused the death of hundreds of thousands of people during that period Another factor was the cruel policies and ruling of Turkish governors of Arab provinces which alienated the Arab population from the central government in Istanbul

Its inaccurate to say that the Arabs revolted, rather it was just specific groups and factions from among Arabs that had revolted. Arabs were not ideologically or politically homogenous, in fact, there were far more pro-Ottoman Arabs. These pro-Ottoman militia groups, despite being more numerous than the Hashemite rebels were isolated and lacked support from the Ottomans and were thus able to be picked off slowly.

In short, we can summarize the causes of unnecessary tension between Turks and Arabs as following: - The too much expansion of any state will lead to economic, social and political issues. - The basic cause for establishing Ottoman Empire was "Jihad", which was necessary to defend the land against the Crusades and to block them. Once the Ottomans forgot that, the trobles with Arabs (among other Islamic nations) began. - Accepting Nationalism was like taking a virus to conceal weakness of both Turks and Arabs. Both of them couldn't bring on all their material and cultural resources to face industrial and military power of the West. Eventually, the Nationalism virus destroyed both of them.
@thanhhoangnguyen47542 жыл бұрын
Nothing new in those era. Nationalism was already a virus to those in the West. Jusk the Austrian Hungry Empire and the Russian Empire. @kızgın tosbağa Where is this "freedom" you're talking about? Arabs are now living under rule uglier than Ottoman's. Since 1922 and the case is getting worse, and the British and French knew that Arabs and Turks can somehow regain peace and understanding between each other to reform their state, so they decided to destroy Ottoman empire. The West brilliantly managed to create a new situation to make Arabs think they finally got their independence and freedom, while obviously the truth is so far from that. It was better to stay under the Ottoman rule (because it was at least legitimate!) than to face regimes controlled ultimately by the West and Capitalism.

1- There is literally a museum for the house of British spy Lawrence in Arabia. He is honored and seen as a hero by Saudis. So I think knowing that already clears up many things on this case. 2- There is literally a Hilton Hotel upon the graveyard of first caliph of Islam 3- First wahabi revolts occurred during rule of Mahmud II (first reformist Ottoman sultan) and wahabis sacked the tomb of prophet's relatives. All of them were repaired by Turks. 4- A person from west interested in that case must learn the difference between Turkish way of Islam and Wahhabi fundamentalism. Even during under the most conservative and islamic sultan of Ottoman Empire Turks have never came in terms with Gulf Arabian way of islam which is incredibly backwards and purist. Most of Arabs (except Lebanon Iraq and Syria) anyway never accepted the caliphate of Ottomans since Selim conquered Egypt and Arab lands. 5- Arab Revolts were a reaction to Turkish nationalism in regions like Lebanon and parts of Syria however it was nothing but a British backed division plan when you look at southern parts. The amount of gold given to Saudi warlords by British during these years is beyond belief. All was to control them. Arabs were promised a large Arabia reaching to southeast of Turkey but of course they had to sit and accept what their bosses offer them while giving all rights to British to obtain their oil sources. How heroic right? 6- All in all as a Turk I am extremely happy that we could cut our ties with this part of the world and we could differentiate ourselves from them by any means.

Love the series big fan. A couple of comments the clip does not highlight and I think they should be included for the history narrative. 1) Sykes Picot treaty between France and England. This treaty was forged in secret to occupy Ottoman territory after Arabs promised Arabs independence in return for revolting. This also includes taking away territories in Anatolia. 2) western powers had long had interests in Ottoman territory especially after oil discovery in Iraq. This of course shaped future conflicts in the region and still does. 3) being a Plural society in the Middle East Europe nationalism would never work and this something everyone failed to understand wether it is arab or Turkish nationalism. This idea had died out eventually. This also applies to the Balkans as it got partitioned and still has conflict and strife. 4)western powers instigated some revolts directly or indirectly via investments or missionaries or protectorates of minorities. I can name one is the Syrian/Lebanese civil war between Druze and Maronites. 5) the Egyptian incursion led by Mohamed ali took a toll on the region. As during that time the Egyptian army (cause we are taking arab or be specific Arabs in Arabian peninsula) was more modernized and better equipped than their ottoman counterparts literally Britain had to send their Navy and Aid the Ottomans. 6) Famine struck the whole region due to the war effort and British and French navy blockades and poor ottoman management. 7) some Arabs fought with the ottomans to the bitter end all the way to Gallipoli. 8) Young Turk and Al Fatat should be mentioned regarding Turkish and Arabic nationalizing ideals. 9) at a later stage prosecution of Arabs and not being in high official ranks who were against pan Turkism and joining World War One. Need a dive on how Ottomans moved from Tanzimat to Panturkisim who took power after and took decision to enter World War One. Overall I like this episode keep them coming.

Time is the best medicine.As ı am a Turk,we should get lessons from history.They betrayed Ottomans and middle east has never been same after Turks had to leave terrorities in middle east.Now There are just wars and blood in middle east.Rebels must be proud of what they did.Ottoman empire was really a big empire unlike colonist France and British empire.

12:54 NOT ACCURATE İNFO! This railway Built by the aids of Indian Muslims, 30% of costs of this railway took by many foreign muslim's aids. This railway connected the Islamic geography together, so the European countries were against it. But the Great Sultan Abdulhamid Sâni was able to build this railway. Here also the goal was to combine the endless Ottoman oil with the Great German industry. (Berlin-Baghdad Railway). The British opposed this and then able tk dethroned Sultan Abdulhamid (1909). Then, after 10 years, the Ottoman Empire collapsed.

Since we’re on the topic of the Ottoman Empire, I’m wondering why Egypt voluntarily divorced itself from the Ottomans only to become a client state of the British Empire?

03:12 This word Wahabbism is ethnic European Propagation same as the middle East, now if India is said to be East India, it's names are Bharat, Hindustan. India is a colonial name, although since it's meaning is a place of natives, it's not much of a concern.

4:41 the bedouin and city Arabs are different people with different cultures. The city Arabs weren't " bedouin" and didn't associate themselves with them mostly. In fact, it was known that the richer city Arabs often hired bedouins in the ottoman era as low wage servants to complete basic jobs.

In the social hierarchy there were clear distinctions of status and power between “ Turks ” ( atrak ) , the term usually applied by native Egyptian writers to both Ottomans and Mamluks , and the Arabic - speaking indigenous population whom those in power often lumped together as " peasants " ( fallahin ) regardless of occu- pation or residence . 4:47 Clarification: The Wahhabi War wasn't an Arab revolt against the Ottomans, since the Ottomans never took control of the region of Nejd (not to be confused with the coastal Nejd al Hasa)

Ottoman had to fall. The rest of the Islamic world fell. Only Persians remained free. Hindustan fall, central Asia, east Asia fell. The worst days of Muslims begins. Though I as a Muslim support this. Hard time creates strong men. Islam re risen from Ashes. Now it's in Europe. Thanks to colonialism. The unstoppable tide of Islam.

Some parallels with other empires that broke up when the monarch attempted to centralise control of of the colonies, like George III losing America, or the alienation of the Hispanic elites by the Spanish Bourbon reforms. Could you do a video on the Hispanic American wars of independence? Thanks.

It's funny how Turks and Greeks get along well abroad and joke about their bad blood, but when Turks and Arabs meet abroad, they get one step from throwing hands over this subject and who betrayed whom.

The Turks who do that are just European wannabes , Arabs don't even open this topic at all , some Turks do open it and call Arabs as betrayers , but most of my Turkish friends and brothers would call it "fitnah" and move on
@İsraildestekçisiturk14 күн бұрын
Thats because greeks attacking us cannot be considered a betrayal. We really took their lands. But arabs were the first ones to attack us. The first east turkestan massacre was done by the arabs not the chinese. So we destroyed their empire in return. But in greeks' case, we were the first to attack them.

Between the Ottoman Empire did not join World War I and survive to modern days and the Khedivate of Egypt eventually rose to become the new major Islamic power instead of the Ottoman Empire, which sounds more likely? Regardless of which happened, Britain will still won anyway in some ways. If not by military victories, then the political and diplomatic victories are most likely. And the Hejaz will be in the hands of the Muslim dynasty that did not practice Wahhabism in this timeline.
@abomarsyr103 Жыл бұрын
Corrections: The revolt was not against the ottomans. It was against the young Turks who led a coup against abdulhamid. They were the final reason for the end of the empire, and they sacrificed so many Arab soldiers for no reason in WWI. Sharif Hussein didn’t go out by his own choice, but he was asked to by so many groups or societies in the levant as if he was looked at as the best leader or alternative.
