@PlutoDarknight2 жыл бұрын
@@swintuch1369 It's exactly what it says on paper. You summon a stand to act as spectral armor for you while you get to punch a lot. Early on, Astral Self replaces your relevant combat stat with Wisdom, which makes for decent roleplay opportunities when your wisdom is high since you will probably notice everything and everyone. At 11th you can deflect energy attacks and deal more damage if you land at least one hit and when you get to 17 you get even more AC and get to attack 3 times instead of twice [plus whatever you want to spend on Flurry of Blows]. It's literally just punching but with ghost arms.

Spamming Hadoukens is fine and dandy. But it's way better to make your best impression of Kenshiro from Fist of the North Star by saying "Omae wa mou, shindeiru."(You are already dead) after touching the BBEG's general with your Quivering Palm, killing him instantly on a failed CON save or recieving 10d10 necrotic damage if he succeeds. Either way, you MUST describe the finishing blow like a Mortal Kombat fatality. I fixed it.

Digging the new scene transition at the start, KB. And yes, you can throw hadoukens, as well as many other flavors of martial arts both real and fictional. And you're not limited to purely unarmed; you have a limited selection of weapons available like sai, quarterstaff etc., allowing you to go full TMNT! (pizza not included)
@a_cynical_mad_man_vods2 жыл бұрын
So in defense of Kensei Monks, at a mid level (somewhere between lvl 6 and lvl 11) you gain the ability to add you martial arts die to your weapon attacks. You have a long sword or a different high damage non-heavy weapon you can actually do really good damage, and you get two double die weapon attacks and an unarmed strike per turn without needing to use flurry of blows. I personally feel that it's the most consistent high damage monk in the game that doesn't require your opponents to make saves against them, like way of the open hands quivering palm.

Monk is fun, but starts slow. You can attack a lot, but without your later class features the damage can be kind of meh. And you don't want to get stuck in ranged combat. Some subclasses have ranged options, but the class focus is martial art. And if you can't get your party to throw in short rests here and there to let you recharge it, you can have trouble managing your Ki. On the bright side, if you don't let the enemy overwhelm you, close combat is your domain. Up to 3 attacks a turn at level 2, increasing more in later levels. The ability to try and stun (= skip turn & advantage on attack against them) on every attack as long as you have Ki left. Mobility options that rival many casters, allowing you to position yourself on the battlefield where you gain the most advantage, or hunt down pretty much anything short of fliers and long range teleport. Punching ghosts and other things immune to mundane damage. And increasingly ridiculous defensive buffs as you level up: From reduced fall damage & catching projectiles, over reduced AoE damage & shrugging off debuffs, all the way to straight up ignoring any poison/disease, buff to all saving throws, and no longer ageing or requiring food. And that's without whatever else the subclasses add. And unlike most magic users', your pool of tricks comes back after just a quick power nap.

@arcticwolf27422 жыл бұрын
Hey, how did that turn out? I'm playing Ascendant Dragon Monk too! We've tweaked it to be less ribbon-feature-y, and actually decent. Like actual flight. And a dragon transformation as your capstone feature. Was thinking of dipping into something else with the three other levels I'd have, so you piqued my interest with the bear totem bar-bar.
@TheWolfofice2 жыл бұрын
@@arcticwolf2742 The character is lvl 11 atm. Pretty tanky with bear totem barbarian and tough feat, but I also took brass dragonborn and subrace metallic dragonborn, and took Dragon Fear for lvl 4 feat. So I basically grab aggro with 1 breath (breath weapon), then use other attack action to use other breath (breath of the dragon) (turn into roar) to fear every enemy within 30 ft.

in 3.0 and 3.5 monk was the joke class because it required investment in 4 different stats to be viable with it's class abilities. Dex for flurry/Finesse/AC/saves Con for HP/concentration and saves Wis for class abilities and saves and Int for skills. the 4.0 rework made them more inline with a general dps where they focused more oon a dex/wis build since finesse was baked into their unarmed strikes and 5.0 carried that with int being their only really necessary sub stat but only for one archetype.

Meanwhile 4e had the most hilarious handling of attributes in which in addition to wisdom as your primary stat ~depending on what kind of monk you were playing~ You might need Strength Dex Chr But it was cool though because Monks had some of the most hilariously stupid moves in the game in terms of what they could do and combo into.
