In the first of what will hopefully be a series of meals with friends and fellow food lovers, I catch up with my friend, Dr Anand Shenoy, over a delicious Saraswat meal, with some vegetarian dishes that took him back to his childhood memories. We also savour forgotten seafood dishes from an erstwhile restaurant, Unicorn that was hugely popular in its days. All this, made possible by restaurateur Pratiksha Nayak at her LightHouse restaurant, Bengaluru, with the vegetarian dishes contributed by her mother, Mrs. Parvathi Nayak. This was an interesting, leisurely afternoon, of great food no doubt, but also one that offered a peek into the GSB culture and one of Bengaluru’s now sadly lost culinary gems, Unicorn

Kripal, Bengaluru also gets a lot of farmed freshwater fish….the Karnataka govt promotes pisciculture , for example Yelahanka is known for farmed catfish and Catla …Tumkur is famous for farmed Tilapia and Basa , Mysore for Cauvery Trout , Channapatna for farmed shrimp etc….it’s not just seafood . Farmed and river fish is also popular

This restaurant an interesting discovery , as most of the dishes barring crab chilli, chicken 65 & fish 93 are made by us. I was particularly impressed by tepla ambat which we regularly make, as texture and colour was awesome. Vaingan bajji ( gulla or big purple) is also very regularly made. Actually GSB food variety in vegetarian is far higher then non vegetarian! Thanks kripal for this vlog- must visit on our next visit to Bangalore.

Sir, Usually Goan dish means more of Catholic dishes in Goa but it's when we travel towards Mangalore, Kasergode, or Karwar, or anywhere in Kerala, only then do we get to see these GSB cuisines, not just in Bangalore, but in Goa too it's missing, when I went to Goa I couldn't find any. Sir, I would like to see these catholic and GSB videos of Goa and Coastal Karnataka too, like a comparison video or something of Coastal Karnataka, Kasargode, and how that's different from their Goan counterparts/brothers who didn't migrate during the Portuguese invasion in your channel.

I used to think amchigelle was more like GSB phenomenon and not language. Because in Mumbai Marathi speaking GSBs also seem to say this. And I used to think Nayak to be Tulu speaking. (Desai of course will be Konkani) . So the restaurant seems to have heritage of both Tulu and Konkani speaking coastal Karnataka .

Appreciate your kind words, Balaji. It is entirely their hard work and painstaking efforts, the last couple of years haven’t been easy for restaurants and the people behind them. So they deserve all the credit for being able to sustain and contribute to many livelihoods.
