Alec so glad to hear you talk about SAFETY, you are influencing lots of folks. ALSO so glad you are finally using a board in the vice to support your blades while hand sanding. It drives me crazy to see blademakers working on a razor sharp blade with it sticking out toward their guts (and other important body parts) one forgetful second and you can cut the crap out off yourself. Great vids that I share with all my students and friends.

I'm just going to say that I love the broad pursuit of excellence you demonstrate in your videos. Alec, take the smallest drill bit you have and put a hole in the lid on your 1.50 spray bottle. The reason it takes so long for the fluid to come up the straw is because it's sealed too tightly. As it draws liquid out of the bottle, no air is allowed to get in to replace it. This creates a negative pressure environment inside of the spray bottle (vacuum) that pulls the liquid out of the straw and back into the main reservoir. Evidence of this effect is blatantly obvious in the collapsed shape of the bottle.

Alec ditch spray bottles and get a one hand garden sprayer. Pump the sprayer and get consistant adjustable streams. Your hands will thank you!
@Beastt176 жыл бұрын
This is perhaps a bit of a pointless.... "point", but it looked to me like the cheap spray bottle was forming a vacuum in the reservoir. Sometimes it helps to unscrew the top every so often to equalize the pressure so the pump isn't fighting against the partial vacuum. Of course, a better spray bottle is definitely the best fix. Keep giving me my most entertaining 15-20 minutes of each day, Alec. I'm not sure how you do it, but you keep me looking forward to each episode.

This Kris is coming out awesome! On your spray bottle, if you take the cap off every once and a while relieving the vacuum pressure, it won't suck the liquid back into the bottle and will hopefully work better.

The most fantastic part about all of the pain of doing the most challenging whatsis you've ever done (by a long shot), vis-a-vis grinding a kris-style blade, is that when you go back to normal stuff, e.g. a previously challenging honkin' big sword, it is now rather pedestrian in comparison. The steps toward mastery are funny like that but, as is so often the case with journeys and destinations, those often laborious steps are also the most enjoyable. I envy you your voyages of discovery.

Ever thought of doing a collab with an engraver or some such? Like make a set of engraving tools then use them to complete a project? Maybe stone cutting tools? Or woodworking tools (other than chisels since that'd be a repeat effort). Crosscut saws, broadaxes, adze, hand drills, etc It'd be interesting to see traditional tools resurrected by a profession that would have originally produced them. Or cookware! Or is that more casting than forging. Could it be both? Cast iron vs raised steel skillets? Bah, now I'm just spit-balling.

I would go for the chemical resistant type spray bottles, Alec. They last longer than the water type ones and you can use them with cleaning chemicals without them leaking. Label each one, give it a shot of a color with some paint for quick identification and never use it with a different chemical. We did this in a manufacturing plant I worked at and it made things so much better for cleanup.

Just a note Alec. When you are using the grinder. Put a 5 gallon bucket with water in it. Under the bottom wheel. The sparks and much metal will fall into the water bucket. Use about 4 gallons of water in the bucket. It keeps the place cleaner, less dust.

Don't know of you still read the comments on older videos but of my inclinations are correct if you open the spray bottle and equalize the pressure it should spray every time. It looks as if there is a great deal of negative pressure inside the bottle negating the suction of the pump action sprayer.

Alec, when you're dry sanding make sure you and Jamie are using particulate masks! Sandpaper dust is just as bad as any other kind if you breathe it in.

seen a cool process on another channel. Guy took this dagger/sword using his magnetic power sliding table to hold it in place , an instead of say your case running the wheel over the work piece he held a piece of wood with sand paper still over top the area he wanted to sand an had the table move underneath his hands. So to repeat, hands were stationary holding sanding block, and table holding dagger/sword moved back an forth under his hands. Seemed like a really smart idea for someone that had a magnetic power sliding table head.

When I was a polisher at a gun factory, many of us had more control sitting down with our elbows planted on our thighs. Granted, our items were smaller, (semi-auto hand guns) getting the more complicated radius' and leaving a sharp edge was so much easier that way. Perhaps bring a stool in the grind room and try that?
@1320crusier6 жыл бұрын
Alec, put some sort of catch basin or something under the grinder. Also, some kind of guard so bits dont get slung backwards. You wont have to clean as much and will have a bucket-o-dust you can experiment with in your foundry.

Alec, If you are near-sighted I would recommend that you remove your glass for working so close to the blade. Right now you're young and your eyes can make the adjustments to compensate for the prescription lenses but you would be better off allowing your eyes to focus naturally.
@McSpuds6 жыл бұрын
Hi Alex, just came from your Claymore vids (tempering one) and working my way up through them but for tempering have you considered a vertical oil bath of some kind with the oil pre-heated to the desired temp and then leaving the blade in that for however long you need. With the availability of types of diameter and length of metal pipes these shouldn't be an issue making one sized for any sword. If you have since overcame the problem since the vid I am on and I've not seen it feel absolutely free to ignore this lol.

I have a theory that might help you out next time you need to grind a curvy blade! (although I could be completely wrong) instead of grinding with the blade horizontal, grind it vertically on the wheels. If you hold the blade at the correct angle for the bevels I think you wont have to trying to match the curve of the blade as well. (I hope that makes as much sense to you as it does in my head)

Alec, you can use sand paper wrapped around a drill using duct tape and which ever grit you need to sand smaller more particular areas on blades. Just a suggestion though Im surr you are aware. I personally like your will to sand by hand to achieve great results.
@leospitz65416 жыл бұрын
You need to build a deeper forge to use when you are doing these long projects. I would also suggest an electric hardening/tempering oven. It would give you more precise control over your temperatures for the hardening and allow you to soak the metal for longer periods. soak times can be as important or even more important than the temperature reached. Also an electric oven would not produce the scale on the metal. I wish I could remember what we used but back when I used to do heat treating we did what we called 'sandbed' heat treating. we would bury the part in a granular media that would support it on all sides as it heated and prevent warping or distortion but it was a media that would not melt at high temps.
