I apologize for getting verbose on your comments section, but I wanted to comment on the great message you gave on the satisfaction of your work. I'm not a smith, though a lifelong sword geek. I am a scientist who has had many students. The real things are only accomplished with the greatest focus, willingness to move on from failure and simple hard work. There is sublime joy to be had in doing it right. Everyone else can shuffle home after doing something mediocre. The artists, writers and scientists know the fruits of passionate obsession with getting it right.

Alec buddy, next time you switch out the bulb you should avoid holding touching the new bulb directly. The oil on you skin can damage the bulb at high temprature (different thermal loading or something)
@0num4
@0num4 6 жыл бұрын
The oil creates hot spots on the glass, shortening the life of the filament. Use gloves, or at least wash your hands thoroughly just prior to handling. Source: I've been a 20 year old knucklehead who burned through half a dozen bulbs before figuring this out, too :D

I particularly enjoy the way you explain yourself and your thinking. It's a great way for others to learn. So you make some mistakes... That is a key part of the learning process. You are, without setting out to do it, becoming an excellent teacher. It really is a pleasure. I've wanted to forge a sword for years. Dear Alec: Speaking as someone who works on cars for a living, you should know that both of the bulbs you replaced in this episode, will be blown out soon. Rule #1 when dealing with vehicle bulbs is avoid getting oils on the glass. It will cause the bulb to burn out prematurely. Always wear nitrile gloves when replacing car bulbs.
@mattelam5397
@mattelam5397 6 жыл бұрын
Only on halogen not incandescent or led. Do you replace light bulbs in your home with gloves on?
@mastertwitch1
@mastertwitch1 6 жыл бұрын
oil or moisture on ANY headlight set up will cause the bulb to burn out WAY early. Tail lights, the oil can trap moisture under it. What does moisture do to a tail light? It causes the bulb to crack, and burn out. Most of the bulbs you replace at home, have a glaze on the outside of the glass, because they're exposed, not enclosed. Vehicle bulbs do not.

The amount of time you spent hand-sanding... reminds me of those old Japanese master polishers, hand polishing a Katana. Takes them WEEKS and WEEKS of sanding/polishing, sometimes with the tiniest bit of sandpaper on their thumb, or polishing compound on the tip of a finger, polishing millimeter-by-millimeter, up & down the length of their bladed works of art. You are a true craftsman & artist Alec.

This reminds me when I went to gunsmithing school. They made us hand sand a rifle to mirror finish. 2000 grid with absolutely no lower grit scratches and at 2000 grit you really don't have noticeable scratches so a 800 grit scratch would look like the grand canyon. It was day after day of sanding and it very much sucked. The worst part was with buffing wheels it could be done in a couple hours but i guess it is good to learn to walk before you run.

Well most of the hand sanding is done now, but for next time look into some Duro 60 rubber. That is what is on most contact wheels... I just bought 2 - 10' rolls(one 1" and one 2" wide)for the contact wheels I'm making on my lathe(I'm a noob to machining, so I'm always looking for projects), but I'm gonna take a piece and glue it to a sanding stick for better contour..... take it easy..

I'm not trying to be an ass here, but just curious... have you ever used a sand blasting cabinet? I think you might be thinking about sand blasting for like stripping paint with a heavy abrasive... With a blasting cabinet, you can get really fine either glass bead or aluminium oxide(same thing on belts) media. It can almost give a satin finish, but most people go with like an 80, that gives a grey huge, but i've never had it mess up any details. You can see in my video "1000 grit bevels and Hamon etching"...
@JETWTF
@JETWTF 6 жыл бұрын
Sand to 320 grit on the grinder then hit it with baking soda with the sand blaster for satin and followed by volcanic ash for fine satin almost polished and it will be a nice finish without hours of hand sanding. You wont have any sharp corners but you don't want any to begin with. Baking soda and volcanic ash wont remove corners, just soften them. And you can always adjust the pressure with the sand blaster so you have more control you can get a mirror finish with volcanic ash and low pressure because the particles are that fine.

Everything is "just" something. Most things are "just" stuff. Just because you add "just" before the word doesn't change the fact that there is a correct way and an incorrect way of doing things and the incorrect way of installing a headlight is getting oil or grease on it first. It's just an opinion dude. You should relax.

Alec, from all that I've seen of you on your channel and your effort towards being disciplined, I think you would find mindfulness meditation extremely valuable. You already have more patience than I.

I spotted this video in my suggestion and instead of watching this first, I have binge watched from episode 1. I am now subscribed and eagerly awaiting the next upload.

Alec' s speeches reminds me of that little kid who needs to write a ten page essay the next day and is trying desperately to get the word count up. But that's okay because we still love you Alec and everything you do jeep it up man

Hay Alec. Don't knock yourself on your standards! I'm not saying don't aim for the top, just recognise you're probably nearer than you realise. Hats off!

Alec, the dollar spray will only work properly if you remove the vacuum that has been created when you spray. So, everytime your spray gets crunch up, just release the vacuum.

A good point to make here is that when a tail light goes out always clean the other one. Sometimes the road grit that gets past the gasket material can build up on the bulb which holds the heat and eventually causes the filament to fail. Change one side and clean the other.
