I can’t wait to find out who the player canonically is as a character in undertale and deltarune, I imagine it probably is something like this where they literally just look at everything in this world as goofy entertainment.

Plot twist: It's you.
@kingh.d5838 Жыл бұрын
@@willow5945 not much of a plot twist there now is it lol, there seems to be some secret canonical force or being that interacts with Kris, Chara, and Frisk, through the soul and through the voice(that many with me included assume is Gaster but we could be wrong potentially), at least I’m pretty sure. But if the game ends and nothing like that is evident or nothing remotely like that can be found then I guess I’d be wrong. I’m still extremely confident that’s the case though on account of deltarune and genocide route’s ending cutscenes. But I’m not gonna try to sway you or anything, you do your interpretation and theorizing and I’ll do mine and we can both just enjoy a game we like. I like that common interpretation as well, though not as much as the idea that there’s still an unseen force in the games which is the main reason I hope that turns out to be it.
@willow5945 Жыл бұрын
@@kingh.d5838 This is like the issue of mind-body dualism. You can invent an invisible force which controls the body, or you can just conclude the body controls itself, but that doesn't affect how the mechanics of free will would actually function--just what's doing the controlling. Similarly, we have in Deltarune a relationship between Kris inside the game, and the literal player outside of it. The player (the actual human being who owns this particular copy of Deltarune) has ways in which they affect the world within, which are felt by the characters. What you want to do is establish a pseudo-player of sorts, who exists within the game entirely, and can stand in for the actual player in such instances as it becomes apparent. I don't really see the point of this, since the direct connection between Kris and the player is intrinsic to the mechanical functioning of the game itself, and trying to create a step removed would simply add redundancy. I think that's actually what Chara was supposed to be in Undertale: Sharing the name the player chooses, and being the "true chara" (as opposed to merely the "main chara") in the game files, they are the player-character deproblematized. They are not their own person being controlled, but rather the player ourselves embodied in the game. It is a simplistic relationship, typical of other games, which seems bizarre when standing in juxtaposition to the complexity of its context. The problem, of course, is that the waters are muddied by Chara having a backstory in True Pacifist, which is the strain of Undertale most resembling a traditional story--actions are explained by motivations based in in-world events, and it builds to an ending with finality and satisfaction. Flowey here is not a reflection of the player's darker desires, but simply a sad undead goat boy. The Surface is not a stand-in for the real world outside the game, but an in-game above ground region the characters can actually go to. Chara is not the player incarnate, but just another human who happened to be Flowey's sibling. They can be both. Things can work on multiple levels. But when you, as most players do, and are expected to do, True Pacifist first, that lens is the one you look at future runs with, and end up favouring overall. This is what makes the already strange Chara encounter at the end of Genocide especially confusing. When this person, who has had a childhood you never experienced, now also has a face which isn't yours, and is speaking to you as if you are an other, how do you reconcile that with the far more subtle ways in which Chara operates throughout the rest of the game? This is why I think Toby shifted the player's physical manifestation to the Soul in Deltarune. The Soul has no identity. It has no voice, no face, no point of origin. It barely has corporeal existence. But it is unquestionably you. You are hurt only when it is hurt. When you move, only it moves. Kris moves because you are within them, and all others follow Kris. So I don't think Chara will be in Deltarune.

@@willow5945 I just find the player irl thing more interesting as symbolism, while seeing a representation of us inside the game who is canonically outside the game is more interesting and appealing to me story wise than a complete erasure of the fourth wall. It’s exclusively a personal opinion thing so I’m fine with anyone not understanding it or seeing it as redundant, we can like whatever we want after all whether I turn out to be wrong or not. Similarly to liking Gwenpool or that guy in that manga with the power “all-fiction” over direct reader-inserts. People who are the person reading the story canonically make me feel more interested when they are represented in some way to me, the reader in the Manhwa omniscient reader being a good example too I think. People who can be like, “hey I read this story” and proceed to control what’s happening because they’re suddenly in it. I enjoy characters that represent us more than us being the character out of sheer feeling and personal opinion for what story elements I tend to enjoy more, not so much logic or fact. So the attempt to establish this is more something that isn’t going to be understood logically I think.

@@kingh.d5838 The difference between Deltarune and stuff like that is it's a video game. When you play any video game, be it Deltarune or Super Mario or Monkey Island or Cyberpunk 2077 or Candy Crush, you are inserting yourself as an active agent within the world. There's no getting around that. It's an intrinsic facet of the medium. The only variable is to what degree the game attempts to conceal that fact from you, to make you feel as though you are the player character, and that you yourself do not exist. It's just like how Hollywood films make you forget you're an invisible peeping tom spying on other people's lives.

SOUL: "Most Important and Powerful Individual"? "Serve and please"? "God"? I'm a floating red heart. I'm just here because I was hoping to see some familiar faces. I saw familiar faces, but I doubt they are the same people I know. Also, while he was right about my ability to change things...let's just say I always regret it because it makes me an a-hole. I'm really not sure what type of "God" you think I am when I agreed to not interfere.

I don't understand why Ppl are/were hyped seeing sans in deltarune, we also have Toriel, Asgore, Undyne, Napstablook... Generally a lot of characters from Undertale, yet everyone is overjoyed just because sans is there
@Cratmang2 жыл бұрын
Sans is one of, if not THE most popular Undertale character. His dialogue and "voice" dealt out a decent chunk of the game's laughs, and there's a lot of mystery surrounding him (and by extension, his brother Papyrus). Given how he had a significant role in Undertale, a lot of fans are excitedly speculating about how he'll affect the plot of Deltarune, assuming he does anything other than sit at the sidelines while cracking bad puns and fourth-wall jokes. That being said, I can respect that not everyone has a high opinion of the funny skeleton man.
@FennziGames2 жыл бұрын
@@Cratmang I mean, I do like sans, for same reasons but being so overhyped about his sole presence is kind of ridiculous for me, of course, I too am interested in how he'll affect the plot of deltarune, if he'll affect it at all... He may be but seeing the same character having another major, great role in plot of another Toby Fox game would be kinda disappointing for me, not because I don't like sans but because it'd be boring for me if he was given another spotlight
