In a net shell, there is an assumption going around that the Battle of the Trees was the same battle where Gwydion killed Pryderi, and therefore Arawn is associated with that poem of Taliesin. However, they are clearly different battles as the enemy is different (In the poem its a foreign invader who took the Fortress of Vevenir), there are no conjured trees mentioned in the Fourth branch and its a series of skirmishes ending in a duel, not an epic battle lead by an unnamed woman.

Oh dear! I hadn't heard that theory before. But, based on the other text I found, it appears that in some early tradition Arawn was associated with Cad Goddeu. The poem in the book of Taliesin is a version of the story, but probably not the source. Also, beware of anyone talking about Caer "Vevinhir". That's based on a 19th c. misreading of the manuscript in a very poor translation. All modern scholars are in agreement that it's Nevenhir/Nefenhyr - so anyone writing commentary on Cad Goddeu who is using that spelling hasn't seen a decent modern translation. (Nobody knows what Nefenhyr means, though!)

@@KrisHughes Thanks for the clarification, I am using different translations to compare,. Do you know of any references that name Arawn outside the Mabinogi from Medieval sources?

@@edwardlecore141 (Just saw your question.) Not other than the text quoted by Guest that I discussed in the video.

@@KrisHughes Strange how rare the name is. But then so much is lost. I wonder if we are missing major Mabinogi stories and if it's possible to reconstruct them.
