@rbrtck5 жыл бұрын
@@MistyeyedNStarrified Actually, it's not about where/how the movies were released, but rather which studio made them. The studio that made movies such as _The Lion King_ and _Frozen_ is the one that Walt Disney and his brother Roy founded in 1923, forming the initial nucleus of the Disney empire. This studio has existed continuously over the past 96 years and is a direct part of Walt's legacy. It has been known by several different names over the decades, its current one being Walt Disney Animation Studios--this is the real, old-school Disney that started it all. Some call it WDAS for short, while most know it as Disney Animation. Within Disney, it is a very insular, isolated creative entity that only works on its own movies, and per Walt's dislike for sequels in general, it has made very few to date--only 5, actually, which are: _The Rescuers Down Under_ (1990), _Fantasia 2000_ (1999), _Winnie the Pooh_ (2011), _Ralph Breaks the Internet_ (2018), and _Frozen II_ (2019), the latter indeed being this venerated studio's first sequel to a musical, making it kind of a big deal. Every other "sequel" to WDAS' original movies was made by a different studio, namely Disney MovieToons, which was a spin-off of Disney's TV animation division. These movies were low-budget projects that unlike WDAS' "tent pole" blockbusters were animated overseas at various TV animation studios, some of which were Disney-owned while others were not. In contrast, WDAS' movies are big-budget projects that are animated by their own animation staff at their facility at Disney headquarters in Burbank, California, just like back in Walt's time. At some point this century, MovieToons was ordered to stop making cheap "sequels" to WDAS' movies (historically known as Disney animated features), was revamped and restaffed with an emphasis on improved quality, and renamed Disneytoon Studios. From that point on they did much better work on their own movies, such as the Disney Fairies series featuring Tinker Bell. These were animated by Prana Studios, a non-Disney-owned animation studio located in India. The studio's revenue stream eventually dried up, however, and Disneytoon was shuttered, perhaps permanently. Nowadays, Disney kind of pretends that the MovieToons-made "sequels" don't even exist, although many people of a certain age range are still well aware of them. These movies, nearly all of which were direct-to-video releases, don't really count in some ways. They were a way to squeeze some additional revenue from each new franchise created by WDAS without forcing WDAS to make their own sequels. Disney was going to do the same with Pixar, but Pixar refused and insisted on making their own sequels instead, in order to protect their reputation. Disney realizes now that that was a wise choice, and have tasked WDAS with making their own sequels from now on like Pixar, which means that they really don't want to bring up the MovieToon "sequels". They're not lying about _Frozen II_ , though, as long as they're talking about WDAS specifically--it is indeed their first musical sequel, and only their 5th overall in 96 years. By the way, WDAS has nothing to do with the live-action and fake-live-action (realistically-rendered CGI) remakes of their movies, and in fact many WDAS employees are silently offended by them. This is almost like the MovieToons "sequels" debacle all over again, just in a different form.
@rbrtck5 жыл бұрын
@@ekwrocks No, WDAS (AKA Disney Animation) have never made a sequel to their movie _The Lion King_ (and had nothing to do with the recent fake-live-action remake). A different studio, Disney MovieToons, made several cheap direct-to-video "sequels" to _The Lion King_ (and many other WDAS movies), but WDAS do not consider them canonical, and even the Disney corporation appear to deny/ignore/forget their existence these days. Idina Menzel and Kristen Bell either don't know or don't care about them. _Frozen II_ is different because it was made by WDAS, who also made the original _Frozen_ . WDAS is Walt's own animation studio that made the original Mickey Mouse cartoons (1928) and the first major animated feature in history _Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs_ (1937); for much of movie history, WDAS were practically the only feature animation studio, and certainly the only one that was constantly working on new movies the whole time. Legends/classics such as _The Little Mermaid_ (1989), _Beauty and the Beast_ (1991), and _Aladdin_ (1992)--all of these were from WDAS, too. Here is a *complete* list of their animated features, including *all* of the canonical sequels they've made (all 5 of them): en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Walt_Disney_Animation_Studios_films This is what old folks like me considered "Disney" before the main corporation, once a small renegade independent studio, became a monstrous global conglomerate that swallowed half of Hollywood. WDAS still exists (of course) as a self-contained, rather isolated division of Disney (as are all of Disney's studios).
