In this video I'm showing you all the basics of creating color charts, how to mix watercolor to make a large variety of colors, and how to study one color to fully understand its capabilities. Watercolor color charting can be so helpful when you're painting to inspire you to create new combinations you haven't tried, and to help you know how to get to the color that you want. This year I'll be creating different color studies based on the colors in my palette. The colors I used here are:
Viridian
Burnt Umber
Opera Rose
Alizarin Crimson
Cad Red
Cad Orange
Yellow Ochre
Winsor yellow
Sap green
French ultramarine Blue
Prussian Blue
Violet
Cerulean Blue

I know, I’m a year late but it happened to pop up in my feed. I’m a beginner and this looks like a fun thing to do. Thanks for uploading 😊

I absolutely love this kind of color chart. Thank you so much. I get very overwhelmed with the one that looks like a multiplication table.Ibalso appreciate you giving the measurements.

I've seen it done this way before. I don't remember who it was. A super popular KZbinr 🤦‍♀️ I'm happy that this version is getting around because it's SO much easier than those HUGE color charts! Thanks for sharing your mixes. They are all so beautiful 😍

True Viridian is a PG18 pigment . This looks like it might be a Viridian hue that's made with PG7 which is close to the same hue but much more intense because its a Phthalocyanine pigment. Color names are deceptive unless we know what brands you are using.

I appreciate this comment. But the "Veridian Hue" in my Winsor & Newton Cotman beginner set is labeled PG7 ... and it's an awful bright and unnatural color! Nothing like Kristin is showing in this video. I've yet to find a way to mix it to something I can use.

She says in the video description that she uses Winsor & Newton professional grade paints as well as Cotman, and the Viridian she is using looks identical to my Winsor & Newton Professional Viridian, which is PG18.

@@thatswhatshesaid.literally737 It was unclear in the description which Viridian, she used. You are probably right, as a newbie I purchased the Cotman Viridian PG7, which looks nothing like the viridian she used in the video. The PG7 was too bright and overwhelmed mixes rather easily, unaware of the differences, it had me convinced Viridian was not a color I ever needed on my palette. Many people won't have the experience to know the difference. Simply stating this very important, basic info for the featured paint would be extremely helpful.

My mission gold Viridian is PG7 I used to hate it but now I use it as a mixing color just like your charts. I started to really enjoy it.

This is super useful and informative, hardly ever use my Viridian, but now I think I’ll be mixing it and using it much more, and I have to say maths is not my strong point and you telling us how big the squares are is so great. Going to give this a try.

The Viridian that you used seems so much darker than what I’m used to seeing. Much more of a forest green colour. This is a great way to chart colour mixes. Very creative.

That was so much fun to watch. When you added the water for the 2nd and 3rd columns, did you dip the brush straight into a container water ? This is where I have so much trouble with the water getting dirty so fast.

Hello. Thank you for every tips in every video. Can we use cheap watercolors, brushes and books? Pls tell me.

I believe it's the paper that will dictate the quality of the painting, so ideally 100%cotton, 300gsm/140lb and 'NOT' finish is the best. Arches is £10-12 for 10 sheets of A4. Brushes, I use Artmaster pearl series brushes which start from £2 each for a small one and you only need a detail one and a bigger one to begin with, so probably £10. Then paints - if you do colour charts like explained here you could get away with just buying 3 colours, but 6 would be ideal, a warm red, blue and yellow and a cool blue red and yellow then it's up to you what paints you choose, either a set with ready choose colours or single colours of only 3 or 6 and be prepared to learn to mix your own colours, if you want me to suggest some colours I'll take a look at my paints.

You can probably skimp out on both the quality of brushes and paint while learning, but using a cheaper paper will ultimately frustrate and can even make you think you can't do it when in reality it's only your paper letting you down. Always go fo a 100% cotton paper, but it doesn't have to be arches there's many other cheaper brands that still perform well, shop around.😊

This is misleading, your colors are not accurate colors and then your viridian does not look like a true viridian, bläh
@kristinvanleuven

Hi! I’m not sure how this is misleading, mixing colors is for fun. I’m using the names of the colors off the winsor and Newton tubes, so you might need to take it up with them if they look wrong to you
