I felt that Hilda not learning her lesson and repeating the same mistakes was extremely humanizing. Raising a kid is hard and she is a soon to be teenager. I'm sure next season will give us more insight about Johanna and Hilda's relationship. The show is not rushing it which is good as it feels like the backbone of its theme

YES! And she is just a child, 11 years old child, and at that age, is hard to develop so perfectly, it's almost impossible for ANY human being. Also, it's possible to see that Hilda was having too much of everything, her environment was filled with crazy adventures and now, Johanna is also a kind of a "problem" to her (remember, she is just a child). I think people are judging these 2 seasons too early, based on how the history of the show takes time to increase

This so hard. @Kross Hilda is a child, and The Fifty Year Night didn't magically solve the core conflict between the two characters, it just put it on hold. Hilda, before she moved to Trollburg, was used to near-perfect freedom and the ability to roam and have adventures whenever she chose. Johanna (rightly) is opposed to this, so even thought her experiences in TFYN showed her that her mother has emotions too, and she's not just a controlling bitch, Hilda still wants to go out and have adventures, and Johanna still wants her to stay safe. The conflict continues. I would also like to point out that the "adventures" that Hilda goes on TFYN between and the finale are a bit...low-key? -The Deerfox: As Kross said, Johanna went on this adventure, and it kinda showed off the conflict I pointed out. Hilda is an experienced - albeit still "in training" adventurer, and her mom is rightly terrified by that fact. -The Yule Lads: Hilda's never in danger in this one. She just makes some friends(without even leaving town!) and then has to go save her mother. -The Jorts Incident: Not an adventure Hilda could avoid if she _wanted to._ She did actually seek out adult help fairly quickly, though. See, she can learn! -The Replacement: Not even Hilda's adventure. She's never in danger at any point. In the finale she does leave town and explore some ruins, but she doesn't even consider it an _adventure_ by this point, but a glorified milk-run. Her attitude toward Johanna is a lot more harsh, but it's stuff building up from small things that explodes when Johanna starts preventing Hilda from adventuring _properly._ In The Deerfox Johanna was either a "useful party member" or completely out of the way, so when she starts doing the Mom Thing and actively slows Hilda down when the cards are on the table and it's harmful to the goal? Of course Hilda would get snippy. I do hope Hilda's empathy for Johanna's feelings sticks for S3 in a meaningful way, but I don't think she forgot the lesson she learned in TFYN. Ahlburg's arc did kinda flop in the end, though. But I think it's far from over. For both of those arcs I think the main thrust of the issue is that Season 2 isn't done. Well, it is, but it was never meant to stand alone like S1 was. They didn't expect S1 to explode like it did, so it was self-contained. S2 ended on a cliffhanger for Hilda herself, yes, but also Ahlburg, and the relationship between Hilda and her mom. edit: I do also think it criminal that they kinda dropped the Environmentalism aspect for all but 2 episodes(even The Old Bells kinda glossed over it, or it would have been 3). I hope that makes a harder return in S3 with Ahlburg's arc, but it being downplayed here was not good. Still an AMAZING show, basically perfect, but this is a valid nitpick.

When you think about it, what happens to Hilda at the end of season 2 is the direct consequence of her actions She hides secrets from her mom, goes outside the walls, insults her mother and tries to sneak out, which her mother is not letting to happen, she doesn't wait outside for her mother to come back with Twig. which leads to her befriending the two Trolls, which was actually a trap in a way in the end

It's my understanding that it captures her characterization in the graphic novel series, too, in a way that the animated series hadn't so much beforehand. I think that there was probably some concern about making the protagonist seem "a little bratty" or significantly disobedient (like she is in the comics) in the first season, just because the series was very new and based off a franchise by an author who had never carried his own show before. It might not have been clear whether it would have an audience at all and who that audience would be. Children roughly the protagonist's age, along with older periphery demographics, tend to prefer characters who are less perfect. Younger children and/or their parents might find it off-putting or even disturbing when two characters the child is emotionally invested in have serious conflict (bear in mind that I'm talking here about children much younger than those who would generally watch a show like this; again, though, it's a fairly unusual series whose actual audience wasn't totally obvious). I think that's part of why it felt slightly out of character, though, and like it should have been a more meaningful moment for the character. Short-lived clashes with her mother are just *a thing* in the comics, so it makes more sense that this more serious incident would be the start of a new arc in her character development rather than being both the beginning and the end of it.

Something I really appreciate about this show is how Scandinavian the fantasy feels. The type of animals you see. The different mythical creatures. The look of the landscape, the trees, houses, even the water felt Scandinavian for some reason. Heck, the librarian witch even chants in Swedish at one point. It brings back nostalgic memories of playing in the woods as a kid. Pointing at rocks telling each other a witch or a troll had turned into it. Having our own little adventures exploring the different paths in the woods. It's not uncommon to see trolls or vikings or gnomes or whatever scandinavian folklore represented in pop culture. But we rarely get the commitment and the feel of something like Hilda.

Yeah. Honestly, I think that was what I loved with this season. I like how they made her act irrationally at times, making poor decisions and learning from them. Even if the "learning" part was gradual. Which was another thing I really appreciated about it. It didn't make Hilda immediately learn from her mistakes, instead, she repeated them and learned her wrongdoings through trail and error. This show was a complete joy to watch, and I can't wait for season 3!

Hilda is a kid, she's not going to learn a lesson the first, second, or maybe even tenth time around until it finally sticks. The fact that she and her mom are having some kind of tension that builds up over stupid little things isn't bad writing or out of character its just how family is sometimes. Hilda is a stubborn little hothead and Johanna is trying her best as a single mother with an adventurous daughter in a world where adventure comes with very real risk that a child just wont consider until its too late. I love that this show takes into consideration that real growth and change takes time and cant happen in just a few episodes.

I think Hilda not learning her lesson the first time around is good. We all know kids, or have been those kids, who make the same mistake a couple more times, or take the lessons learned and apply terms and conditions to twist the rules and feel that their actions are justified. 9:30 I think that moment for Johanna is in line with her character. When she grounds Hilda and doubts herself in her car, she said she didn't want to be that kind of mother. I think she has a problem with negative reinforcement as a teaching tool in general and would have considered that saying "now you know how I feel" was saying more than was necessary. Her expression towards Hilda as she said that line makes it clear that she's probably thinking something along that line, but she's the kind of mother who's just happy that her daughter had that realization. Johanna respects the ability and intelligence of her daughter more than many cartoon parents. She definitely would have trusted Hilda to put 2 and 2 together.

Listening to Bella Ramsay's song "Life Of Hilda" it directly states that she doesn't learn from her mistakes. Her flaw is that she's overconfident and a bit arrogant. They'll no doubt have her overcome this flaw at some point as it's pretty much her whole arc. I think the show's doing a pretty good job at displaying it.

I personally thought that the way they handled Hilda's relationship with her mom as well as Ahlberg's storyline was not bad at all. While the first season felt like a pilot season in a way, this one felt like the start of the series' actual story... basically, everything wasn't supposed to be solved by the last episode, but was simply the start of something bigger. Personally, I'm sure these plot-points will continue being explored in future seasons and for that reason I am actually really glad they didn't get resolved so soon. Now Ahlberg will get the chance to become a bigger threat and get his punishment eventually... and of course, we'll get to explore Hilda and her mom's relationship a lot more and they'll finally fix their issues.

I don't think "show" should be improved. If they were "improved", in truth: remade in your image, they would lose what they made special : different, sometimes broken but to be loved. in case of a show, you have to keep progression slow, to create space for more stories with the mother. By the way, how Hilda is ressenting her mother at the end of the season is realistic. It's slowly building during the seaon. Hilda is frustrated to justify any move and believes her mother should just trust and wait for her with dinner. She wants to be a free of care adventurer. Her mother has to teach her it's not that easy. As a kid, it's difficult for Hilda to put herself in Joanna's shoes. She believes it's just "mother act", not genuine. Also the character is maturing: more and more independant. It's obvious in the episode where her mother prepare a game. Joanna thought her children will be happy to play with her, but Hilda is already too old : she has friends and her own agenda. She can operate without her mother. And of course it's in a way sad for Joanna even if it was expected. Classic drama. Hilda is kid : she'll be irresponsible. Maybe in a way the character should be irresponsible for her whole life : it is irresponsible to oneself to go in danger to save others, but it is the life of Hilda.

Johanna and Hilda’s conflict did feel kinda obligatory because the final episode was based on the fourth graphic novel. I feel like the show is at it’s strongest when it doesn’t try to stay too close to the source material. The graphic novels are quite different from the show, especially in terms of the characters. Hilda and Johanna were more prone to anger and fought a lot more, so when the dialogue from the books are put in the show, it can feel kinda out of place, like you said.
@SwordTune
@SwordTune 4 жыл бұрын
I feel the opposite. I think this balance between the show's interpretation and borrowing from the source makes it clear that they are still very close, but that their relationship is changing just as their lives are changing. The Deerfox as an episode focused on Twig, but the conflict that Twig was experiencing is a direct parallel to Hilda and Johanna. Hilda realizes that life for Twig was completely turned around, but it's easier to see that for animals and pets since they have fewer wants. Twig running away was him reacting to a life he felt he no longer fit into. So, where does that leave Hilda, Johanna, and their relationship. Both characters don't feel as if they themselves have changed. Like most humans, we feel like we are consistent from day to day. Because of this, they expect that their relationship should stay the same as well. Hilda is acting like she always does because her mother always allowed her to run free. On the other hand, Johanna has always been mindful of Hilda's safety and set limits for how far she can go. The problem is, the city isn't like the wilderness. Hilda feels like she can go further and face more dangerous because the city is so small. Everywhere she goes, she's more or less right next to her home. Johanna loves her daughter's adventurous side and is slow to curtail it, so when they reach the city she trusts her daughter's decisions and only expects honesty and transparency. In the wild, this was easy to do since Johanna was the only person Hilda knew. In the city, as her relationships develop and she gains new friends, the importance of confiding in her mother diminishes. It starts small, like not telling her mum about a paper she wrote. Then when she's in the middle of an adventure with the Woodman, she doesn't have time to say anything. These small lies compound, and slowly Hilda doesn't see why her mother has to be involved with her adventures. I know the conflict seems dumb or forced from an outsider's perspective, but seeing the world from both their eyes, I rather quite enjoy it.

Well I don’t know about you but my mom can be sad one day and have me as her emotional support, spend the day together and talk one day and the next day for the slightest thing she will explode and ruins everyone mod, maybe it’s the consequence of messy children + being opposed to a authority kind of parenthood + having a internal conflict, since Hilda mom seems to be opposed at punishing her children as the Time travel episode confirmed, it would be kinda hesitant to punish Hilda for more mess that she done because she probably Doesn’t want conflict, leaving her to explode when she actually does argues with her beacuse she is letting out all her pain that she have been holding on, and it doesn’t help 1) Hilda have risky situations every day 2) She is a single mother ( Good now I realized how much Hilda’s mother and mine have in common )

So, there's probably not gonna be a season 3. There's only one book left to adapt, and it's gonna be a 70-min movie covering the Hilda-as-a-troll arc. Not exactly sure why the books stopped, or if maybe the show will go further than that (hope it does), but needless to say, I am deeply saddened, as I fully consider this show to be the true successor to Gravity Falls (I consider it better, even) and it's probably my favourite current cartoon (though I fully agree with your criticisms of it).

People have already said they enjoyed where the show deviates from the books. The show can easily continue without the books. The author of the books is also on the staff for the show, so it's entirely possible that the books have stopped because Luke Pearson wants to continue with animated media. Or, more books can be released alongside new seasons of Hilda. All I know is that if season 3 doesn't come, Netflix won't last long and I'm going to get arrested for arson. Those two things may or may not be related.

The books haven´t stopped. The latest book was released in 2019 after Hilda premiered on Netflix(2018), so it could be possible for another book to release before season 3. Besides, the entirety of season 2 only had one book ( the stone forest) as basis, the rest was made up, so it's not farfetched for them to make season 3 with only one book (the mountain king)

I quite like having a protagonist who doesn't learn their lesson immediately, I've watched people in my life go through the same thing over and over again, and only when the lesson is taught in the hardest way possible does it get through to them. In the show it's already been established that Hilda doesn't think too much about her own safety, which is why she doesn't fully learn her lesson after the time travel episode. If she had, she would've told her mom what had happened but she didn't. It took Johanna being the one in danger for Hilda to realize what her mother has been going through. I will admit though, that was a perfect "how do you think I feel" moment that was absolutely wasted. But I like how they're handling Hilda's character development. In one of the credit songs it states in the lyrics "my name is Hilda I don't learn from my mistakes" so having her relearn lessons is very in character and makes me more excited for when she does finally learn from her mistakes!

I will say as someone who works with children it’s perfectly in character that hilda doesn’t learn from her mistakes after immediately. That’s what makes her such a well written character in my eyes. While hopeful and generally kindhearted, she doesn’t know how to change for the better yet because she’s still a very cerebral child.

Also I like the point you made about Hilda getting out of character in the finales, I found it just- a little off how aggressive she got. Also it might just be me but I wasn't sure if I found the scene in The Deerfox where she talked about things changing that fitting? It seemed like she'd gotten pretty used to the city and she did like it, even if she did miss the cabin. If we had seen more of just little bits of nostalgia and thinking about her old home more, I think that scene where she kinda breaks down more compelling.

I don’t know about you but I feel like they had a natural mother daughter relationship, I may not be a daughter but I know my mom would act just like Johanna if I were like hilda, and one of the things I love most about the show is how the characters feel genuine, like gravity falls is great and all but shows like gf and many others just don’t have kids that feel like kids, they feel like goofy over the top stereotypes and they don’t quite personify kids. Dipper and Mabel are kid like but I only get that impression in their heart felt moments, other wise I feel like dipper is a cartoony kid scientist like person while Mable is the “Goofy quirky main character” I am stretching a little bit in the fact that there are plenty of times where they are just kids, in fact most of the time but they still feel like stereotypes someone told to act and behave like a kid. I got a little off topic but I’m just trying to say that this show has some of the most well written characters from any show I’ve ever seen! And not enough people point that out!
@PyroBlaster

Regarding Hilda acting out of character to favor plotlines: to me, it seemed a reasonable change in attitude to her character. What I mean by that is that she is still just a child who is still developing her moral compass and learning about consequences and empathy. But, since she is still a kid, Hilda is still susceptible to show a side of selfishness without (seemingly) caring much about how others feel. Selfishness is one of the most common negative traits in children, and that is why there is such an emphasis on teaching the importance of sharing, compassion and empathy. To me, this only showed she wasn't considering the big picture of the problem, as kids tend to do, and didn't care that much about how Johanna felt because she antagonized her out of frustration of being grounded. Children often overlook parents feelings when starting to learn to deal with adversities, because in their perspective, adults can be very "command-y" and annoying. It's a bit like how it's easy for students to forget their teacher is a real person who has their own life, their own problems and their own feelings. So, Hilda lashing out at Johanna like that didn't strike me as plot mismanagement, rather it showed me she still hasn't been confronted with these more difficult settings where her natural aspirations go against what her mother teaches (and must teach) her. That said, I do agree this show could do better in showing continuing signs of lessons that have been learned, and I hope this arc, when concluded, does just that.

Hilda's behavior is actually realistic when it comes to children handling 'character' development. We have to take note that Hilda's character is about 10 years old, nearing that rebellious phase. It makes sense how even after experiencing something that should have been development worthy is shoved aside because she is still attracted to danger by her own sense of adventure.

I don't think that relationship drama was completely unexpected. Thing is Hilda is on the cusp of becoming a teenager, the age when a lot of kids start thinking that they don't need their parents. At the same time, Johana is starting to crack down on Hilda's bad behavior more. So it is not exactly that unexpected that they'd but heads a little more. Also remember some of the larger context of the situation. I think a part of Hilda is still feeling a little confined by city life verses her more free range life in the wilderness. In fact I think a big part of the Twig centered episode was showing that a part of Hilda is still having trouble adapting to the more controlled life in the city. In the cast of Eric Alborg. I get your point. But the thin is I do not think his arc is down yet. I think part of the point about season two was to start introducing the theme of not considering how your actions effect nature, and others, and maybe question some of founding assumption about Trollberg. That Trolls are the inherent aggressors for example. In fact I think that the cliff hanger is about setting up a more climatic show down between him and Hilda, and fully exploring the consequences of his actions. Lets remember, most of Trollberg is on board with what he's doing, with only Hilda and her crew, along with a few allies standing in his way. Meaning taking him down is going also involve fundamentally changing aspects of Trollberg culture.

What I like about Hilda, along with a lot more modern cartoons, is that the first season came to me with world building and immersion. We have the characters, the creatures, the setting, and the relationship to each one of those subjects to our main character. And then the second seasons usually expand further and introduce narrative elements. I liked Hilda mostly because there really wasn't much of an ongoing story and that it was such a feel good show. The second season was the perfect bridge of reintroduction and expansion.

(I know this is a long post but just give it a read and let me know what you think about what I have to say, I’d be happy to reply to anyone who reaches out) I absolutely love this show, but something people need to realize is tho she’s smart and quick thinking, maturity wise she’s just a kid! And kids get into dumb fights with their parents all the time, it’s not out of the ordinary for a child to love there parent one day then the next have some little thing that sets them off and they hate them. That’s why I thought hilda did a great job at portraying how a single parent and her kid would act considering the circumstances. Your obviously allowed to think what you want but that’s just my two cents on the matter. Also this is a freaking kids show! The fact it is this good and meant for kids but loved by adults, speaks volumes! As for the not learning her lesson thing, just cause you learn about something doesn’t mean you apply it right away whether your an adult or kid, but also from a show standpoint how many shows that are a fantastic that do the exact same thing! Spongebob can learn a lesson but then disregard it the next episode or take a more story based show like fairy odd parents, Timmy learns his lesson by the end of an episode and some life lesson is taught but after that you move onto the next adventure. The first three episodes were purely to show a bit into hildas past, they were to show us where they came from and set us up as to why they are in the city. I think because you basing your expectations on the first three episodes is like basing your expectations on just the first 20 mins of a movie. It’s there to show where the character is and then set them up to where they are going to be for the rest of the movie. Like if we expected ray to stay on jaku for the rest of the movie instead of going into space and going on adventures afterwards in space. Over all I’m just on guy who loved the show and aside from some awkward or cringy bits which all shows especially kids shows have so it’s really not that big a deal and hildas mom not giving her a little more discipline. It’s a kids show at the end of the day, so if her mom isn’t as harsh as she should be sometimes it because this is not trying to portray a hyper realistic story of these two, rather an enjoyable one that makes you smile. You wouldn’t want a story of hilda mom getting super fed up with hilda grounding her and then see this cycle again and again every time she goes on an adventure, and I think even hildas mom knows this, she loves that her daughter is fearless and adventurous, and she wants to keep her save but also not squash the youth and adventurousness she has that I and most adults watching this have lost over the years. Just enjoy the fact this show exists and that despite being a kids show that it try’s to show real world elements that adults will enjoy. Stop over analyzing everything and just enjoy this thrilling and heart warming story. Thank you for coming to my ted talk.

Another thing is that I think part of why characters feel bit inconsistent is that animation Hilda/Johanna and comic Hilda/Johanna are fairly different. Comic Hilda is overall more bratty and Johanna more nervous wreck. So few times when Hilda turns suddenly really bratty is that suddenly she is following the scene from comic :'D (though that is still confusing since obviously they have changed some things from comics even when the episode is adapting a comic's story)

When Johanna leaves to get Twig this experience finally gives Hilda the lesson she Needed to finally learn from Johanna about the danger of her adventures and why Johanna worries.

I never felt that Hilda's confrontational attitude with her mother was contrived or out of character. It's a mistake to say "oh, they had a good relationship, it shouldn't change that much." When they realize it's not exactly how they thought, that is definitely going to be a big change.

I think modern cartoons have realized that traditional literary character development isn't necessarily true to life. It's not just kids cartoons either. Bojack Horseman still commits horrible atrocities in spite of being self-aware that his actions are self-destructive.

I get the frustration and I completely agree with most of what you said story telling wise. But with hilda and johanna's case I think the conflict is perfectly understandable. Hilda is a pre-teen, who's world keeps expanding from just her and her mom. It's frustrating that they keep making the same mistakes and they don't seem to take the time to communicate but that's also a realistic portrayal of people. I just hope they make more seasons of hilda after the movie special. The character development is a bit slow but I hope it pays off.

Written right after watching season 2, so *spoilers* : The ending of season two was really nice.. The moment you see the mother switch the heads, you know it's some sort of spell. The worried look in her eyes when she looks at her child. "I love him but it isn't safe here. Maybe the human world will offer him a better life, where he doesn't have to fight and hide". It's really astounishing. Everyone seems to be afraid of trolls, yet they are living beings as well that feel pain, discomfort and joy. The only reason they seem so aggressive is because they lack resources to survive and why is that? Trolburg, a city built by humans. "They weren't using this space anyway" as Eric said but we all know something must be wrong in this statement. Yet everyone believes this and so does Eric, who is expected to be great like his ancestor and now that his assistant has disobyed him, maybe nothing is stopping him from taking the full control of an operation to destroy trolls and this meand that Hilda is in danger.

Finally, we get some of that main character depth! Hilda's becoming more and more realistic now and I love it. I pray that in S3, Hilda and Johanna's relationship gets even MORE attention; there's just so much we need to cover on those 2.

I agree with a lot of your points BUT, I think the reason why she hasn’t shown a lot of development on “learning from her mistakes” is cause the show’s not actually OVER yet. There’s probably gonna be some big moment later in the show (or even in the movie) where she does something huge that SHOWS how much she’s changed. At least that’s what usually happens in an arc like this haha

I think that if we ever get a 3rd season the episodes will either be adapted from the rest of the novels that may come out or adapted from the illustrated books, but it’s more possible that the next seasons will have their own original plot lines considering that Luke Pearson is working along with the show.

Regarding Erik Ahlberg, we've had a trend of fictional villains who are supposed to be leaders, but are completely inept at their jobs, and are so egotistical and never think they're making things worse around them. God knows why it's these last four years =.= . I wouldn't want Ahlberg to be sorry, but it'll be more interesting if he acknowledges that he screwed up, but still pretends that he's doing a great job. I think they're saving his arc for the upcoming movie special. As for Hilda and Joanna's conflict, I agree they could've pointed out the parallels of Hilda worrying about Joanna's safety in Chapter 13. But I'm fine with her overall arc this season. Kids (even adults) may need more than one occasion to learn the same lessons, and in Hilda's case? It's not just learning that actions have consequences, it's also trusting her mother to accept her day-to-day activities. You can't usually learn all that in one single incident (or episode), and even then the same mistakes might happen again. Also, kids and parents can argue, even loving ones. Hilda's a coming-of-age kid, and wants more freedom for herself while having trust issues with her mother. Do you think a young kid wouldn't be angry if they feel their freedom's being restricted (even if it's irrational)? Maybe a super-obedient kid, but Hilda's a wild child who literally dives off cliffs and faces monsters. I totally believe she could lash out to her own mother like that, but also acknowledge her mistakes by the end. The whole thing adds a new dimension to Hilda and Joanna's relationship, and with the way it's done, I think it's quite believable. I do think that Hilda finally learned how to trust her mother by Season 2's end. As for learning that action have consequences? She gets one HELL of a consequence, which all could've been avoided if Hilda dealt with her issues with her mother properly (and kept them from stumbling into Troll Mountain to begin with).

Idk I feel like they’re still introducing us to Alburg and I’m sure they’re going to a lot more with his character later. I think he’s an interesting “villain” and I’d want to see his shenanigans escalated in the next season. Also I think one of the themes in this show seems to be “people are afraid of what they don’t understand” and a lot of politicians take advantage of that to gain support and power, what seems like Alburg is doing. “Fear mongering” if you will. The people of trollberg probably won’t think anything of Alburg until he does something that significantly hurts the people. Again, people fear what they don’t understand, the easiest thing to do is get rid of whatever they fear, no matter the means, no matter the effects. No one will criticize him until Alburg does something that puts everyone in danger.

Hilda is unreasonable because she's slowly becoming a teenager. I'm seeing the exact same things in my nephews and nieces. This is on top of moving to the city. She can't go back I think she low key or subconsciously blames her mom for it, even if her life has been enriched by being able to have human friends and still have her cake and eat it to by having adventures, etc. Mom is partially to blame because she'd let Hilda roam the countryside but doesn't really allow for that same freedom in the city.

Love the video. I want to share my OPINION with you, if it's okay. Okay so, there a few things I agree with you on but I have a different perspective about. I think the show is going for a slow burn and realistic effect. This applies to the main antagonist arc, which I definetly believe will continue in the next season. As you said, no real repercussions yet, but I think something big is brewing: things got messier and messier, the kraken and the mountain "infested" with trolls to me are like the bubbles inside a soda can, they are increasing the pressure and the fear of the trollberg people, but the bubble, or can should i say since i used that metaphore, hasn't burst yet. But i believe it will. That's because Hilda and her friends had an inverse development towards these events: they are gradually getting more and more involved with this magical and dangerous wild world. Even David became a viking for a day (should it count as two? I dunno) and faced his doubts towards Victoria Van Gale. They are growing up. Which brings me to my second point which is about Hilda and Johanna's relationship. I think that this will be an overarching plot as welll that we'll see continue in the next season, there are many hints to the fact that Johanna is having a hard time adjusting to a growing and more and more adolescent Hilda. And viceversa, since Hilda is still young and adolescent, she is, realistically, facing the same mistakes over and over, disobeying her mother in the process. As a result: the finale. Johanna is a wonderful mom and really loves Hilda, so she tries to be understanding and in the end trusting Hilda and her capabilities. Unfortunately, as they discover the last morning of the last episode, that shouldn't always be the case. Hilda won the "I can take care of myself" argument over and over with her mom, but this time she got into quite the mess, she turned into a troll changeling. Last season we saw Frieda facing the first symptoms of adolescence, this time it was Hilda's turn, and a bit David's too with his oncoming crush arc and fearless arc. I mean, I get what you are saying, usually there should be consequences in a story, to teach a lesson, and the charachters should change their behaviours accordingly. Except, that's not what happens in real life, that's what i mean with realistic effect. Hilda will keep getting things, even the same ones, wrong and will keep being herself: a prebubescent-really-verging-into-hyperactive-adhd-territory wild girl. She will learn, but only after her own point of view shifts, not because of her mother worrying or scolding, like we all did at that age (my mother used to say to me "I will only warn you three times before getting angry" and most of the time, she got angry) , but only because she'll grow mature and learn, on her own, the consequences for her. It sounds selfish, and it is, and that's because most teenagers are, even if they don't mean to. Something has to happen to her so that she's the one worried about her own actions. Which is what we saw in the first season with the tide mice and what we'll probably see now that Hilda has to face her transformation into a troll. It's no longer just Johanna's problem to put it shortly, it's hers as well. My suggestion is: think of Hilda not just as a standard charachter but rather as one created to simulate that teen friend of yours that had a bit of a "grudge" (which actually was a lack of understanding and communication for example) towards their parents. Personally I feel so much more connected to their relationship now than I used to, because that's what happened times and times again to me and my friends growing up: we would f* up all the times and still f* up again, even though our parents warned us not to or even made us pay the consequences of our actions. Because we dumb. Hilda is a smart girl, but she still has to learn, and you learn by making mistakes, not just once, but many times. Sometimes you'll get lucky and none will know, sometimes you won't. That being said this wall of text is not in anyway meant to be an attack or anything of the sorts, just my point of view that i want to share with you because, personally, i think the writing of the show increased considerably in quality and I think that they are also trying and succeding in breaking some common sense rules of the genre. Then again, love your videos. Keep up the good work.

Something I thought about a lot during the bell episode is what if Hilda took a more diplomatic approach to stopping the bells in the city? Such as making all the magical creatures she knew sign a petition to get rid of the bells and share their concerns to the public. Was the bells an idea that Ahlberg pushed for on his own or did the mayor sign off on it and people support the idea? I felt like there was a lot of moments where Johanna showed a lot of care for magical creatures (like in the raven episode), so I was confused why she accepted a job where she is making a poster for the bells. It's likely that she didn't understand the problem because Hilda was keeping secrets from her, but I felt disappointed that only Hilda and her friends are the ones who have to take a stance. To what extend do the people of Trolberg actually understand monsters? There are so many supposedly "good" adults, but they don't really do much - the Raven leader knew about the Woffs being hurt by the bells, but didn't care, the gatekeeper guy only helped after seeing Hilda try to do something, and the witches (librarian and the granny) should have a good opinion on magical creatures but they rarely appear. Is Alberg really the only bad guy here? I feel like the people of Trolberg are not that far off the block from him, since they seem boggled down by propaganda and misconceptions. I feel like, given the chance, people can change: like Johanna getting along with the Nisse when she had a bad opinion before or Gerda seeing that Trolls may have a good side, but even then, they still act close-minded in other ways.

I think a lot of the issues mentioned are due to this season being adapted from one graphic novel. For comparison the first season covered four. With the amount of great additional content in the show I don't think that, in and of itself, is the issue, but the choice to have the first scene of the season cover the first page of book 5 and the last scene of the season cover the last page of book 5 made those plot-lines a feel oddly paced. for example in graphic novel the conflict with Hilda and her mom all happened together, but in the show they have it happen, sort of resolve, and then come back up later so the rest of the story could happen. I think the show would have been better served if they had just left all of that together for the end of the season.

Thank you for addressing the behavioral issue of Hilda. I had the feeling that everyone just goves her a pass, she puts so many people in Danger and she says sorry, and everyone's like "that's good enough for me". She literally had her mother be fed to a human eating monster because she couldn't do what she wants to do. As you sadi the visuals and the characters just amazing, but Hilda comes off as an entitled brat.

Don't forget that Hilda is just a child and she lives alone with his mother before moving to Trolberg. She has lot to learn about human relationship and tough situtation (like the Twig's disappearance). That can explain some strange behavior. She never fall out with Johanna, how can she knows his behavior is offensive for Johana ? She just wants to take fun with David and Frida but Johanna is always opposed to her fun. Without understanding why Johanna does that, she is annoying.
