Every single time I've ever recorded with a band, I listen to that shit non stop on repeat for months on end! It's the culmination of all your hard work combined into one moment. When you're performing, you're caught in a flow state of performance and NEVER get to view your music from an observer stand point. The sheer joy of hearing your music played without having to perform it shines a unique light as to what you've made and how it comes across to other people.

@buggeroff I think you've misunderstood, vulnerability is not limited to someone's safety, in the way that a young woman is 'vulnerable' in going home alone in the dark. @@MarcAbela Great music will have waves of tension and release. It’s what keeps people listening. In this song, however, there are only three chords in the chorus. Usually a song will have four chords in a “complete” progression. But here there’s only three, which causes a dramatic sense of incompleteness, and it never gets resolved and then it repeats again to just keep you on the hook without resolution.

It's a great track and the lyrics are intense for someone so young. But I think what really made Pharrell take not was the intuitive way she built up the vocal layers from the beat. They're choral and percussive at the same time, without sounding derivative. An intuitive understanding of something complex is a sign of genius and Pharrell knows that. She's also really into it because she's remembering the effect she was trying to create. If you've evwr been involved in music production you will have had that feeling. It's not preening or showing off. It's being caught up in the flow of remembering making the thing that appealed to you, and the reason it appealed is the emotional response it generated.

it’s awesome that she was able to make this so young, and even more so that she didn’t just drop out and start touring when this blew up. she kept going through college so she could really hone her craft and not get sidetracked

The creative process of an artist is one of the most beautiful gifts God blessed people with. To start with a blank sheet of paper and turn it into a song that influences our culture or lets us cherish moments that we will remember for the rest of our lives, good or bad, it's so amazing. Praise the Lord 🙏

This so deeply touches my soul. I heard Maggie's amazing song one evening on the radio, instantly shazamed it and when I recently googled her I found this video. How they subtly regard each other is so beautiful in and of itself. This is truly the magic of life's foundation. Thank you both for making music.
