Today's item is a very cool piece - a German Sturmgewehr with a "krummlauf", or curved barrel attachment. This is the 30 degree type, intended (as goofy as this sounds) for firing around corners and over barricades in urban combat. A 90-degree version was also made for use in armored vehicles.

After WWII, they sent a lot of jobless German war vets (Mainly Non-Nazis) to work here in South Africa. A lot of these Germans went to work for the railway in the late 50s early 60s, which was around the time my Grandfather had just started working on the railway. One of these Germans; a bloke by the name of Erik Morlorscht, brought a book with him to the office one day showing German Small Arms of the War. In this book was an article of the SturmGewehr with the Krummlauf Device attached to it. Erik gathered everyone in the Office including my Grandfather, and he showed them all this article, and he said that this barrel was used to shoot around corners. All the other men laughed at him and told him he was talking trash. My grandfather was the only one who believed him, as he grew up reading WWII books.

Cool story, but shitload of nazis escaped to South Africa, joining the ranks of the apartheid gov and the AWB. Those who couldn't buy a clean record from the US/Soviet, because they were too heavily involved in the Holocaust and had no intel/blueprints/expertise to offer in return, went to South America to hide - but the rest of the nazis went to South Africa.

Not everyone in Germany was a Nazi... that'd be like saying all Muricans deserve to die because a Republican President invaded Canada.. Lotta people don't seem to understand that the Nazi Party was a *political party* separate from the military. Yeah they were insanely shady, but not every person in Germany was evil, in fact, many believed they were fighting for a just cause... because they kinda were considering what happened to them post WW1. Just that the political party went nuts, and whats the average joe supposed to do when that happens? In a state where the media was as controlled as it was? In a country crying for revenge after the allies fucked them post WW1? Life's not so black and white kiddo, and an insular view on history is a big cause of why people don't really understand WW2. Especially Germany's motivations. The holocaust just kinda squashes everything and no discussion can occur.

The holes being on top are due to the fact that it's the most sensible place to relieve the pressure since the downward curve will cause there to be a dynamic pressure along the top of the curved section of the barrel.

The 90° version was actually only used on the Jagdpanzer Elefant which had no mounted MGs and could easily be taken out by an infantryman with a few liters of gasoline.But the Krummlauf failed to be an effective protection against infantry, so the germans later changed the Elefant design. It then was known as the "Ferdinand" and had mounted MGs.

But I do not find all of the wartime productions pretty. on the contrary. to me it seems rather odd that the STG is SO DAMN PRETTY, as it was sorta experimental and came to exist in a time where a shitlot (thats a word) of bombs were dropped over those peoples head who designed and came up with it. And its still beautiful.

This version is NOT for shooting round corners though could probably be used for that too. The curve of the barrel is downward. This is for shooting out of trenchments; the soldier standing or kneeling behind cover, in a trench or fox hole and aiming the weapon slightly upwards, so the barrel poking over the top faces directly to the enemy. This is the best solution for every day fighting, troops weren't in cities often, but almost always firing from defensive positions after 1943. I believe Germans made Lefthand and right hand versions for street fight but not sure.

@SingularNinjular
@SingularNinjular 8 жыл бұрын
+Valivali94 How's that? If a thing's very design makes it unreliable, being able to make twenty per day instead of two won't make it any less so. The original Tiger was arguably the most formidable tank of the war when separated from Nazi Germany's relatively poor production capacity, but the sequel and the Jagdtiger were just bad designs. Of course, if I was a Russian rifleman and I saw a Tiger 2 crash through a hedgerow in front of me, you can bet I'd shit my pants and die, but on the strategic scale, it was always going to be a failure.

@militaryhistoryIG
@militaryhistoryIG Жыл бұрын
I know this comment is almost a decade old but... Most validity of the design came out of tank combat. At Kursk, the Germans found a very specific problem of Soviet soldiers climbing on top of tanks and doing things like pouring fuel on the engines and setting them on fire. One solution presented for this was to create something like this so that a tank commander could stick the barrel of this thing out and "sweep" enemy soldiers off of the tank without exposing themselves to enemy fire. The problem really came down to the fact that the Germans didn't have enough machineguns on the Panther and had zero machineguns on their Ferdinand/Elefant tank destroyer. Adding MGs and pistol ports ultimately fixed the problem from an armored vehicle perspective.

Ian himself argues in several videos that it was the precursor to the whole class of Assault rifles (hence the name...), and compares it to the Kalashnikov. How has the design not been perfected and adopted afterwards? Could you give me a source on your 'many issues' or elaborate why it wasn't a very, very functional piece of weaponry that was the first of it's kind (and whose design has been used since).

Len Ibbotson "Wasn't ahead of it's time"? Literally every modern military rifle owes something to the StG-44... it inspired both Stoner and Kalashnikov.
@carbon1255
@carbon1255 6 жыл бұрын
"the STG-44 certainly wasn't ahead of it's time, there were many issues with it" If there were not issues with it, it would not be called ahead of it's time, it would be called "Revolutionary". Ahead of it's time means that it has modern elements to it's design that are farsighted, but it does not quite work in the period, hence AHEAD of its time, not simply defining the era. Good ideas, but the execution is not there yet.

For those who think that only the Germans would try something like this, read R.P. Hunnicutt's excellent book on the Sherman tank. The U.S. Army developed a curved barrel version of the M3 "Grease Gun" to be fired through a special port integrated into one of the periscopes on the Sherman's turret. The periscope itself was the aiming device with a reticule added to the glass. These were developed for use in the Pacific against Japanese suicide attacks. I believe Hunnicutt states they were never issued - no surprise. Great vid -as usual, Ian.

This thing is perfect for protracted urban warfare like we've seen in syria recently or in stalingrad. Lots of conflict simmers into a cat and mouse game of snipers (not necessarily very far away) and this is the difference between life and death. I bet even 100 rounds out of that thing is plenty since rounds are used sparingly in that environment too. I would be curious if you could reduce the bend to maybe 15 degrees and prevent the fragmenting problem

this curved barrel served as a shotgun. The bullet overheats and explodes in the curved barrel. The shrapnell served as a shotgun-type shot. Good for close combat. The Germans used it mainly behind tanks, Russian soldiers would try to light up the tank with gasoline. They ran towards the tank and behind the tank a few German soldiers waited until they were in range and boom.

Meh, it is interesting, german or not, useful or not. I have many things that are neither german nor particularly useful that I like. A great example is the thors hammer I have hanging near my computer on the wall. Would probably break if I tried to hammer a nail with it, was likely made in china. I still like it. I am not particularly worried if you approve or not as it is hanging on my wall not yours. As for this curved barrel/sight attachment. More than likely I will never have the money or inclination to own one myself. I will however be impressed and amused by both the uniqueness and creativity of the thing. Likewise I am slightly amused by your disapproval of my amusement. I am however greatly disappointed in your lack of creativity and weak social skills demonstrated by your comments.

You have to wonder about the sanity of the guy in the German ordinance office that approved the acquisition of this monstrosity. Speaking of Acquisitions If you want to know about how German Armament decisions were made I highly recommend the Biography of Albert Speer. Speer was Hitlers architect at first then he became the minister of armaments. If any of the Nazis could be described as brilliant, lucid, and a decent fellow it was Speer. Frontsoldaten was also a good account of what the average landser faced. Many stories of Germans who were becoming disgusted with war. It definitely humanized the HUNS.
