One of the few renditions of Carmen on ice where I recognise the story. "Carmen" is one of the most over-used pieces of music ever in ice skating, yet 99% of the time it's just "dressing in red and black and making sexy moves that look kind of Spanish"... Here at least, you recognise the essence of the story: drama, passion, tragedy... I see people complaining that the choreography is "ugly" or too aggressive... But this is exactly what Carmen is about. Carmen is a very dark, violent story. It's not supposed to be all smiles and prettiness.

Sophitia totally get what you mean. I appreciated the authenticity to the storyline. I know Carmen isn’t all beauty, but some of the choreography just didn’t work for me.

@@susanfield3680 The choreography was far too open in the handholds. Technically, I had this free dance ranked far behind not only Grishuk & Platov but also Anissina & Peizerat and Punsalan & Swallow. The latter team surprises me as I was never a fan of them but their 1998 free dance was excellent.

gk891 Well we all know that back in that day, with block judging, the outcome was predetermined. The second Russian pair was already a shoo-in. I think that K/O had the ability to be great, but their material was just a miss. Too bad- I really liked their Masquerade Waltz free the year before. I LOVED Punsalan/Swallow’s tango. Their dancing reminds me of what we are seeing today; not as dramatic, gimmicky, and traditional as some of the stuff we saw in 1998. They were underscored!!

@@susanfield3680 With this team, it helped that they were the second ranked Russian team and their coach (Linichuk) was very powerful as she trained a lot of teams around the world (which essentially 'bought' some of the judges). However, part of her downfall started when she tried to get rid of Grishuk & Platov after the 1996 Worlds and the ensuing drama that unfolded during the 1996-1997 season when Grishuk & Platov were almost not allowed to skate at Europeans that year and when they showed up with Tarasova as their coach instead of Linichuk.

I think they could've done a bit better if they had spent some time with a coach like Dubova. Because their edges were good but not great, their handholds were very tense relative to a team like Grishuk & Platov, and her stiff back could often make them look gangly, especially in the compulsories. Linichuk's students don't seem to have the same basics that Dubova's do (at least back in the 80s and early 90s as Dubova's work started to become very disappointing after the whole Klimova/Ponomarenko/Usova/Zhulin/Grishuk/Platov/Navka fiasco).

I’ll say this: You won’t find two more committed performers. I don’t think this program works overall but it wasn’t because they weren’t into it and didn’t give it their all. They most certainly did. That first section is outstanding but once they get to the slow part, it becomes an interpretative dance more than an ice dance. The acting, characters and storyline is there but it comes at the expense of the skating. It just doesn’t work and it won’t sell a panel of conservative judges at the Olympics. You walk away wondering how to react to it, and you don’t want people feeling confused about the emotional impact. You can even hear it from the crowd-the crowd was with them during that first section and then it was very muted the rest of the way. I think they’re brilliant but the program just is not well conceived

I love this free dance, but I have to disagree with Tracy. I don’t see a true comparison between them and Grishuk/Platov. G/P program was full of difficult, intricate moves, and sure it can be said that they won competitions unfairly (looking at you 1994 Olympics and 1997 Worlds) but this was a fair victory. The only thing K/O have is speed. I mean Oleg sprints down the whole length of the ice as fast and as hard as he can. It’s amazing! 😊

@@nathanielharper8701 I also think G&P won the 1997 Worlds fairly. K&O made a major error in the Golden Waltz compulsory dance that should have placed them outside of the top 6 in that dance. I also had them outside of the top 3 in the Rhumba compulsory dance as I thought a number of other teams handled that dance better than them. In the OD, I did have K&O in second place. But in the FD, I only had K&O in third behind G&P (yes they did make errors but the level of content was so far above what K&O attempted) and A&P (their FD was also far more ambitious in terms of content than K&O's FD).

I really don’t think Angelica got Carmen at all. Not exactly sure if she saw the actual opera, but Carmen is sensual, vulgar, aggressive and feminine at the same time, whereas Angelica was only tragic and weirdly aggressive. I actually thought their performance was behind Anissina / Peizerat. As for the gold, they didn’t even come close to it. In a way, they were unfortunate to compete while Grishuk / Platov were at their best. When these two retired, they carried on for another year and won the world and European titles, but Anissina / Peizerat were making so much progress and were being so much more innovative that K/O soon realised they couldn’t keep pace with them for another three years so, sadly, they had to give up.

This free dance should've worked very well because Krylova was born to play the role of Carmen. But like so many programs done by Linichuk & Karponosov, it failed to rise above mediocrity. I had a somewhat similar problem with Grishuk & Platov's rock'n'roll free dance in 1994. It was a fantastic idea on paper and with a different choreographer, it could've been brilliant. But instead, much like this free dance, it ended being something that had good potential but didn't quite make it all the way there. IMO anyways.

Her choreography was awesome artistically speaking but technically lacking though not all the time as Anjelika and Oleg's african themed dance the following year proves. Even under this God awful scoring system, she's managed decently like with Faiellea/Scali's 2010 dances and Domnina/Shabalin's Olympics dances. Yes even their aboriginal "atrocity" was masterful. Fast, maybe faster than anyone else with the exception of Grishchuk and Platov.

She often has good ideas but she's not very good at making them come alive. Not only is the choreography very open in the handholds but her programs tend to be aggressively banal.

I think this team had better speed, unison, appropriate drama, more solid edges and complete moves and polish than Gritschuk and Platov. I would have had them first the FD. G and P were too ragged.

103327 LNK I`m also really surprised at how many thought that K&O should've won. This was a very well rehearsed program as it was sharp and very aggressive. But they practically stopped skating after the first section of the program and started relying on facial expression and mime-like body movements. They also skated further apart whereas Grishuk & Platov were much more tightly entwined within complex handholds and their free dance kept building towards the end. And it was amazing how they kept carving out huge patterns on the ice with their amazing running edges, extending their free legs in unison with one another, and all of their moves were done with little set-up time. This free dance on the other hand had way too much hand to hand and side by side skating. I actually would've placed K&O's free dance well behind not only G&P but also Anissina & Peizerat and Punsulan & Swallow (the latter surprised even me as up until 1998, I was never a fan of Punsulan & Swallow).

Better speed - no; better unison - maybe; Drama - oh yes (even though it was overkill); more solid edges - no; more complete moves - they were maybe better defined but not more complete; polish - maybe (and only because Oksana sometimes didn't look very attractive while doing some movements) (imho of course)

@@Justforfun-ke7bg Krylova could also look very unattractive while doing some movements. She had a stiff back and their (K&O) handholds were tense.

talented skaters but the choreography was too frenetic and overly dramatic with some really ugly positions and poses; B&B's carmen of 1985 was far superior
