Every one of these strikes is intended to end the fight either lethally or...well, slightly less so. Shitachi has to practice striking at full force and following through, with uchitachi interposing the bokken where the cut would land so they don't have to pull their strikes - a practice that is understandable for training safety but creates bad habits.

Why practice striking the space a foot in front of your opponent? Every strike demonstrated falls short. Every counter is unnecessary. Very pretty, to be sure, but also impractical.

It's an illusion. The strikes are purposely redirected so that each blow lands on the other side's weapon. This allows both parties to practice striking at full force without stopping their cuts. But it also hides where the actual killing techniques are aiming at so as to prevent rival schools from understanding what the real intent of the kata is aiming at. This is a unique feature of the Katori Shinto Ryu but some other ryu also have such practice to a certain extent.
