The puzzle you mentioned at the end is a book cipher: (a, b), a - is a row number, b is a letter number P.S. Empty letters don't count, empty rows do, bruh

Spoilers for Orient, if anyone’s curious: The x/+ is a hint to look at whether letters are rotated diagonally or orthogonally. Reading all the letters rotated diagonally gives you OPPOSITEOFCONTRACTSIXLETTERS [Opposite of “contract,” six letters long, expand] Reading all the orthogonal letters gives you SQUAREROOTOFTHIRTYSIX [square root of 36, six] Icely managing to get that second answer is mostly coincidental, which I’m sure is going to frustrate Icely if and when he comes back to solve this. This game’s very fun, and watching someone who’s actually skilled at puzzle games play this is extremely fun after my slow butt struggled to beat it even *with* hints

i just realised the meaning of the letters on the compass. its just the name of the directions in a sentence and b means but. for example, sse means south south-east, nwbn means north west but north and cba means chess but advanced.

It's actually "by", but yeah, basically the same idea. So "southwest by west" is the direction by southwest and to the west.

I got stuck on Yellow Letters because I tried "TEN" which didn't work... and the answer turned out to be "10" instead. Which is kind of dumb considering the game has things like "THREE" as answers, and either format was plausible in that context.

Because I and J used to be different versions of the same letter (the same way that the tail of a lowercase G can be a loop or have an open end) -- it was only after the Renaissance that it started being written as I when it was used as a vowel and J when it was used as a consonant. (Sometimes U/V are put together instead, since they also used to be the same letter.)

oh my god icely, have you never seen ciphers/codes that use a 5x5 grid to encode letters, like playfair or tap code? we have 26 letters so in a cipher/code that uses a 5x5 grid, a cell maps to 2 letters instead of one. so tap code maps C and K to the same pattern, while I and J are interchangeable in some versions of playfair
