Just played through the demo map on my stock A500 Rev6a with 512K slow mem expansion. I did find (thanks to a friend) that I had to unplug the external drive or it failed to load. That aside, I cannot believe I'm playing this on an A500. I'm simply STUNNED!!! No disrespect to the other Devs but this is better (so far) than Gloom or Alien Breed 3D (1) and it's running on OCS! This is some very clever black magic right here! Just.....WOW.

Thanks! :) What kind of external drive did you have? Floppy disk drive on external DF1? Strangely, it shouldn't affect the loading. Unless the system took more resources on boot for the driver, so less space was for Dread.
@005AGIMA
@005AGIMA 2 жыл бұрын
@@KKAltair Yeah it's just a stock A500, no HDD so Im just running it from DF0 from a disk that I wrote the ADF to. The external drive is just an external DF1 so no drivers. I mean....it's an external drive converted to a gotek, but still just acts as a normal DF1. I tried flicking the switch it has to "off" and that didn't help, so unplugged and that worked. My friend replicated the issue first on his A500 and suggested unplugging the drive. That's how we found out this is the problem. It may just be that the A500 uses some minimal ram to detect an external drive? No idea.

Played this on my moderately upgraded A500 (68000 33MHz, 8MB Fast RAM) and runs beautifully. This is the game I dreamed of having on my A600 back in the early 90s, but closest was Death Mask and then Gloom on an A1200 later. This is far better than either of those efforts already. Can't wait for the full game.

This truly is mind blowing, superb work ! Congrats ! I am impressed :-) I had an amiga until 1993 ... then switch to PC ... mainly because of Doom. I remember Carmack comments at the time about Amiga and CD32 not able to do Doom for technical reasons... you proved it all wrong, good job. Some people in the comments are saying how this would change history if send back in time to 1993. Well I think to change history it should be send back to 1989, because then it would not only impact the game market but probably heavily impact the development of Amiga 1200 and CD32 with design choice oriented toward this new type of games. And for a fun though experiment, if this runs on an Amiga 1000 ... imagine this demoed on the official launch of the Amiga 1000 in 1985 ... Lol I don t think anyone present would have been able to process what they had in front of their eyes :-) :-)

Not exactly the type of game the Amiga was designed for--it does not take full advantage of the hardware. The idea of this coming before Doom, and even Wolf3D and the earlier id 3D games is rather fanciful. Doom came out in mid-Dec 1993. Did you already get a PC before the year was out to run Doom?

Running the original Doom via DOS on a 25 MHz 486 was quite poor, so I upgraded to a 486 DX2 50 to make the game playable in 1994. Here, you have made this game playable on a 16 bit, 7.2 MHz Amiga and 8 MHz Atari ST? Simply unbelievable.

@@youtubesuresuckscock Varying floor heights will be implemented, so it will technically be a hybrid of Wolf and Doom on a mere 68000. Which is about the max you can reach. In demoscene productions, they can have fully 3D textured worlds - But those aren't games. Color palette is easily explained by the fact that we are talking OCS/ECS here, and not VGA. The same goes for textures (Which have been greatly improved thanks to Pixelglass) Somehow you expect a vis-a-vis equivalent of the PC code and cannot understand the ''why'' part on why this is impressive. So far (judging by your other postings here) the only person bull crapping here is you. On a technical level, this is a crowning achievement. The fact that you have yet to answer users who implore to start your own engine suggests a limited understanding of what is going on here.

Your work is amazing! I watched also the "2.5D rendering optimizations on Amiga 500 @ Xenium 2019". I'm a rusty programmer & i understood only pieces of it :D . Question1: A hypothetical 68000 machine with chunky, 8bit or 4bit color vram (no need for c2p), but without a blitter and a copper, would perform better or worse than this? Question2: How much would it help, a hypothetical - vertical line chunky - screen mode (which i think it was do-able back then)? Amazing work from all 3 of you (+the Greek member ;). I wish you more successes :) !

It does... Doom was incredible. The ULTIMATE "killer app" for PC. Revolutionary, fun, addictive. As I kid I always thought that Doom was what killed off the Amiga and Commodore... In later years I know better, but I still feel like it was a pretty decent assumption by my younger self. I always loved the Amiga, how games sounded, ran smooth (2D games) had amazing colors (a lot of PCs had CGA, EGA, with no audio card utilizing the PC Speaker). But yeah, VGA, 486 DX2 66MHz together with Doom, that was something else. I guess helping out with this project helps me to heal some of those childhood wounds when the PC became the dominant platform. :)

Congratulations on many levels. - I thought the A500 framerate wouldn't be good enough but it's just fine. I don't even feel the need to load the game on an A1200 config and prefer the added nostalgia aspect of thinking that's how it would have run on my A500. I really didn't expect the game to be so convincing on that level. - I like what the engine can do when it comes to level geometry. These little structures and crates, recesses in the walls. I played, liked and finished wolfenstein, but it never feels like you're in a castle. Dread's level feels like a place. If ceiling or floor "variations" are implemented and lifts, different floors, etc... any other new architectural element will be really really impressive because it's already unexpectedly great. - The textures are beautiful. I didn't expect the game to be able to convey that kind of atmosphere. Truly the graphics are good enough to allow a theme and a background story. (contrary to non textured 3d games for example). I love that specific corridor that has the brown texture instead of the bricks (before the shotgun room). It just gives an identity to the place "Ho, I'm there." Rooms are also very identifiable. - The gameplay and difficulty level are well tuned. It's fun. Of course, there's nothing new under the sun but it really is fun to play. Maybe, there are too many rooms which require the player to kill the enemies by remaining at the entrance before entering. - Also, it'd be nice to be able to pick up a few cartridge clips of real bullets for the gun, even if the rubber ones are infinite. The chaingun is really beautiful. - The secrets are cool and nicely hinted at. A secret corridor would have been even better. Anyway, awesome, impressive and fun.

Many thanks for the feedback! :) I think you're right about the level design and how the enemies play. Current demo was more about showcasing the engine than providing a refined gameplay experience. Awesome comment and feedback like usual @Lectures Alternatives. :) Yeah, I am agreeing with John here. I mean we do have variable ceiling heights currently although those are set to presets of 64/96/128px. Even in its current state I think we can do A LOT architecturally to sell the game even more. Once variable floors are in, with stairs and elevators I honestly think we can build a environments that feel like "real places". The big map (that will be offered to patreons) already have a lot of extra architectural details that sells that feeling. it is super nice to see. I am have started to make a level of my own in doom builder. It's a lot of fun, back in the 90's I did some pretty ambitious multiplayer build engine maps for Duke3D. :) and now with some added expertise as a gamedev and level designer it would be a lot of fun to contribute in that department as well. :D

More than the technological feat that you guys are accomplishing I am impressed by the method that you guys clearly have regarding the development of the game. You seem to have an attention to details in terms of art, gameplay and design, something which is critical to releasing a great game instead of just a great tech demo (remember Shadow of The Beast? 😉). Wishing you the best in this adventure!

@@KKAltair I second what amipal24 said, but since you're here too, I want to add: I would LOVE to hear more about the actual engine hacks that made DREAD possible. I think I read in Fabien Sanglard's Wolf3D book that John Carmack now thinks binary space partitioning would have worked even better than the ray casting he used at the time -- so now I'm wondering if that (BSP) is what DREAD uses? The 16 colours suggest four bit planes, and the emphasis on saving memory perhaps suggests a kind of in-memory mipmapping of each size of vertical column of pixels instead of actual on-the-fly scaling. Am I wrong? I'd love to hear more about the actual engine; I'm hankering for something like a Coding Secrets video on DREAD.

@@ropersonline Dread uses BSP for spatial searches, but draws using presorted perfect visibility lists. For the actual drawing algorithms, look for ToyStory on z MegaDrive and Duke Nukem portal algorithms. Drawing is indeed 4bpp, and uses trick of packing two pixels in one byte for speed. But yes - video would be cool. :D

Hahaha, thanks, kind of cool that you noticed the solution. I am actually really happy about it. I live in a 21sqm studio apartment so I can't really have a permanent Amiga setup. The table double acts as a pull out dining table for 4-6 people. But I am an introvert so 99% of the time it's a desk. xD And once every second week or so I treat myself with "luxury hour" ;) that's when I pull out the A1200 and Commodore 1084. Out of convenience however, I tend to run my physical amiga harddrive (SD-Card) through WinUAE instead of real hardware. The 144Hz freesync monitor does an amazing job of eliminating stutters and latency.
