Hi Keith, i have ranchus in a pond like this as well. I wanted to ask you how much do you feed yours and how often during winter? I am in Melbourne Australia and my pond temps Go down to 16 as I keep a heater inside at the minimum settings. (We have temperature fluctuations that are crazy) . How much wheatgerm pellets would you recommend I feed mine? Thanks Keith!
@Keithmeister94 жыл бұрын
I usually feed 3 to 4x a day. I think Melbourne has similar weather here in So Cal just opposite times. i feed less during winter but feed mainly wheat germ based foods. When i ranchus get a little floaty i just cut down. Each ranchu is different, some are more prone to buoyancy issues when fed a lot. And there are some you just can't save from swim bladder issues. I hope this helps...
@serenemark71574 жыл бұрын
Keith S Thanks Keith. I am now learning that I was underfeeding mine. In fact one actually floated because of underfeeding. (It has an empty stomach lol). I started on floating wheatgerm pellets yesterday and decided to feed by observation (till they visibly slow down eating. And they were so active this morning and that particular fish was totally fine. With regards to water temperatures, do you get the wild changes in temperature during spring and summer in socal? This is the first year in pond which is why i heated it to around 16 degrees. In the coming year I was planning to stop heating. Any advice? I understand ranchu don’t take too well to wild temperature changes.
@Keithmeister94 жыл бұрын
Really depends the size of your pond, the bigger it is the less the temperature fluctuates. In So Cal during the summer temperatures range from 95F(35C) during the day and 75F(24C) at night. Winter temps during the winter can drop down to 40F(4.4c) at night. Just observe your fish. If they are active and eating as they should i wouldn't worry so much about it. Healthy goldfish are hardy and can tolerate bad water conditions for a certain amount of time. Just do your best to maintain good water conditions, i highly suggest overfiltration with heavy loads of bio media, routine water changes, and plants that absorb all that toxic waste the fish produce. You will get to know each fish, some are hardier than others, some are more prone to swim bIadder, some can eat more than others lol. I hope this helps...

@@Keithmeister9 Hey Keith, thanks for the awesome advice. I have been feeding to fish activity and have seen much better results. Our winter temps get so around 4C at night and 12-15C in the day. And in summer could be anywhere from 18C to 42C. I have been over filtering. I have a very large gravity filter rated to over 10,000 Litres of pond water and a l ot of bio media. I also change 30% water twice a week and have many plants inside and along the edge of the pond. The only thing is now that it is winter some plants have cut back on growth but the elodea and val inside the water are doing well. I also have an evergreen oxygenating plant at one corner. I will need to add a couple more plants that stay evergreen. My pond has around 950 to 1,000 litres of water so only slightly more than yours. I have not seen swim bladder since feeding them properly. They really need more than 3 pellets a day LOL! As this is the first winter and some fish aren't conditioned enough I have added a heater to keep temps around 16 degrees so I have been feeding them well now. Nothing special just wheatgerm floating pellets, bloodworms twice a week and occasional repashy supergreen.I think the do not overfeed mantra is causing many fish to be underfed, which weakens them exposing them to unwanted diseases etc. I will be letting the fish adapt to having no heater in pond over the next year. I think slow and steady switch from heater to no heater is the best way. So starting mid spring, the heater will be turned off. This will allow me time to get fish into a very healthy condition before doing this.

These fish are from 2 to 6years old. I feed wheat germ based foods for koi and godfish. Easily digestable and less prone to swim bladder issues.
