Loved your reactions (watched both)! You are dead on with the Janice Joplin comparison. So many people have said the exact thing down through the years about Robert (Plant) & Janice. Jimmy Page is on the guitar, one of the G.O.A.T.s, wrote, co-wrote, and produced all of their music. John Bonham (the drummer) passed away suddenly at 32 in Sept. of 1980, and they decided they would not continue without him, so that was the end sadly! He was called the greatest rock drummer of all time, but certainly of his era, and you will see that if you go down the rabbit hole into their catalogue! The Gentleman on Keys (playing the base with foot pedals for this number), is John Paul Jones, he is the secret sauce of the band's sound, plays many instruments, all of them well, and arranged most of the music as well as writing some of it. Best of luck to you, your fun to watch!

Led Zeppelin had multiple No.1 albums in the United States, to the point where they were considered the biggest band of the decade. They were never quite as appreciated back home in their native England.
@AleisterCrowley. Жыл бұрын
...by the press. For the exact same reason Rolling Stone magazine slammed them for years. They never paid the payroll. Imagine the balls on that. People talk these days about how they changed the game in terms of promoter percentage etc all that is known now, but what you will never hear is how they entirely opted out of press payroll, because it's still a touchy subject that applies to this day. If I was in a band these days, lets call it The Old Cunts cuz im 50 and we were shite, if I had enough money I could pay Rolling Stone to make us sound amazing. We would sell records on the back of that. The press were never made or had any hand in their rise, and were never acknowledged as something that needed to be considered, and they didn't like it. Hence the enduring silence throughout the mainstay. Jimmy Page actually saying anything in public is a recent phenomena, last 10 15 years or so, in general terms.
@216Numbskull Жыл бұрын
@@AleisterCrowley. I've heard Plant talk about how he didn't dig Jann Wenner personally from the first time they met. Robert said Jann was a bundle of bad energy filled with negative vibe that Plant didn't want to be around at all. It was like Wenner was trying to keep up with the "Jones," while Plant was actually living the life with "Jones" seeing they were best mates. To say it simply, they weren't on the same "Page." 😂😜🤣😉 Blah,ha!! +Peace & Rock n' Roll 4 Your Soul My Friend+ ✌️😎
@jmar7631 Жыл бұрын
When/if you have the time, give the studio version a listen. Slightly different vibe but also fabulous because it opens with Page playing an acoustic guitar, and it's just incredible to listen to him. Page had the double-neck guitar built for him because there was no way he could switch from acoustic to electric guitar in the middle of the song during a live performance, and he said there was no other way to do the song justice when they performed it live. Once made, he would also play it for other songs they performed back-to-back, the 12-string tuned for one song, the 6-string for another, so he didn't have to stop and switch guitars. I also watched and enjoyed your reaction to Whole Lotta Love. That was actually the studio version of the song set to various performance clips, but it cut out about 45 seconds of the song. You might enjoy listening to the entire song. Page was also a genius in the studio so I do recommend listening to studio versions as well. Some incredible stuff that, and no auto tune back then! Of course, you can tell from watching them perform Stairway that Plant didn't need auto tune. Rock on! 😉 Edit: Apologies for the lengthy comment but another thought just popped into my head. Another reason to listen to studio versions before live versions is that they loved to improvise. Not so much with Stairway but with most others songs, and it was a real kick. But the only way to know when they were improvising is to first know the song. They were so in-tune with each other and loved to expand on songs, so improv was common with them. Always interesting to hear where they would take a song, but TBH, I like their studio versions of some songs better than their live versions. The Rain Song immediately comes to mind, but there are some others. Either way, they were the best of the best, no doubt about it. 😊 OK, last thought, I promise. If you like blues rock, you'll love Led Zeppelin even more. Whole Lotta Love is hard rock, Stairway to Heave is folk/progressive rock, but they broke real ground with their blues rock tunes. Try any of the following for starters, some for which you can find live versions, others not: You Shook Me I Can't Quit You Baby The Lemon Song Bring It On Home Nobody's Fault But Mine When the Levee Breaks

I've heard people compare Plant and Joplin before. The reason is that both sing the blues with a bit of a gravel type voice. A raw sound. Both also put alot of emotion into singing the blues. Both bring that feeling out in the listener and themselves. Plant met Janis once. When the group was new and just started playing America they were booked to a music festival in Texas. Jimmy Page was old friends with Janis. They were drinking buddies whenever Page got to America and both were in the same area. Janis was a really nice person who would give the shirt off her back to someone. And she saw the not worldly Plant. Could tell he was not a seasoned musician yet and rather innocent (Believe it or not Plant came from the small towns in northern England and while in bands and music he really was not around the sophisticated London crowd. It took a little time hanging around Page that Robert got more worldly. BTW, I heard that even when Led Zeppelin was at their most powerful Plant was a polite and nice guy. They all actually were said to be pretty nice guys. They did not have that diva rock star attitude.

Robert Plant's contribution - as in the rest of the band - is actually learned behaviour. These are post-war British kids exposed to American music through hard to find American imports. Their ability to absorb that is, of course, the reason they became so big in the US. And by 1973 (the year I was born, incidentally) they were well on the way to being the biggest band in the world. It's actually a bit startling, because if you sat down and interviewed them you would quickly realise this was a kind of unfolding fairy-tale for a bunch of foreigners who just happened to have the right sound at the right time.

I read the comments regarding Janis Joplin but although I see the similarities, Plant was influenced by black blues artists before knowing she existed.... Muddy Waters, Lead Belly (In The Pines)-amazing song!! Howlin Wolf , Robert Johnson (Traveling Riverside Blues).which Zeppelin remade ...likely the same inspiration as Janis Joplin. Let's not rewrite history. Give credit where credit is due. Zeppelin was influenced by these early artists.
