The story is Billy Idol was hanging out with Keith Richards. Keith had a bottle of "Rebel Yell" whiskey. Billy saw the bottle and a light went off in his head. He asked Richard "Do you mind ?". Keith looked at the bottle and said "yea go for it!". He took that Rebel Yell whiskey name and wrote a song to it. Classic story.

I never understood why someone as beautiful as her was so madly in love with me. But we had the love of a lifetime and we had what most people never even dream of. Billy was a product of both okay music and the advent of MTV. I don't know if his music would have carried solely on radio. But the fact that MTV was in its infant years and just pumping out videos back then helped him immensely.

He's got a very deep catalogue with more than the MTV anthem hits. I've been listening to him since the 80s and had plenty of mixed tapes of his music, no videos necessary. Also loved him in Gen X,. His music is way better than 'okay'. All the bands in the 80s capitalized on MTV and Billy being gorgeous & charasmatic, MTV was obviously good for him. He's still touring & is supposedly still kicking ass on stage.
