@@nikkishun1891 I work in an elementary school kitchen. Most of it is pre cooked and highly processed. All that's done is put it in the oven to heat it. Thanks for nothing michelle o. Veggies are pushed on the kids only to be thrown away. Most of it is government commodities which is nasty, especially the lunch meat. I know there are some school districts who have said no to government guidelines, but they lose out on funding.

If they took the time out to create a survey and list of foods that students can go down the check list and say if they like it or not,,take a count,so they know how much of this or that type of food to order...cuz alot of foods get thrown away ....but schools are lazy and really don't want to do the work it takes,cuz cooks would be there all day,,not just for breakfast or lunch. Their day would be way longer.

One day when I was in elementary school I got a school lunch. It was French toast sticks with syrup, eggs, sausage pattie and milk. It was nasty. The syrup was bitter. The sticks had white spots on them, the eggs had brown spots, and the pattie had a rotten smell. The milk was sour. I told the other kids not to eat it. Then I ordered the other kids to throw their lunches away. We did this in protest of bad lunches. About 4 million pounds of food was thrown away that day. The cafeteria workers were mad.

When i was in elementary school they packaged the lunch (expect for the pizza) so if you didnt want it you wouldnt open it and instead leave it next to a table that was next to the trash bin and at the end of the day the last grade to eat would get the choice of eating it if they wanted more and it was a really good way of not wasting food imo

We were NEVER allowed to leave anything at my schools - we had to eat it! Didn't matter if it tasted disgusting or made us ill - eat it, we were told, in no uncertain terms - while they were happy to force feed us greens or whatever, they were quick enough to deprive us of things we actually LIKED, like a decent pudding or whatever - but woe betide us if we left our cabbage or cauliflower or sprouts - it was as if they conducted a survey of what we like, versus what we didn't like (which they didn't), but then misread it - so and so doesn't like sprouts, so give them a Brobdingnagian portion - so and so lists apple crumble as a favourite dessert, so let's see what excuse we can come up with to deny them it!

I wish my school had a salad bar! We mainly have prepackaged fruit (too much added sugar for my taste" and steamed(?) vegetable cups without any seasoning. We do have raw baby carrots and sometimes raw broccoli, which is what I eat. Kids through a lot away. A lot less would be wasted if we didn't have requirements on what we have to pick up and if the vegetables where either fresh or seasoned

Just so you know, I’m in a middle school in southwest Missouri and our food is delicious. I don’t know how, but I’m often very excited when I buy my lunch. It requires you though to have the main(whatever big things on the menu) a least one container of fruit cup, at least one side, and a thing of milk. I can’t stand milk though, and due to COVID I’m not allowed to put it in a bin we used to have for uneaten food (mainly fruit cups or vegetable cups or milk) so I’m throwing away my milk all because it was mandatory and I had to have it even though I can’t stand it.

Also i want to know why is there a nutritionist at a school? When I was in school we didnt have nutritionist. We had health class to teach us along with sex ed combined. Yeah no duh we throw away a crap ton of fruits and veggies. The food itself is garbage and so are the veggies. The fruit it’s even a real fruit half the time, they give us highly sugared crap or those stupid fruit cups, most of the time they’re expired so how about you try the food and see how you like it?🙄 Edit: one time they gave us a “fruit juice cup.” It looked like period blood and it tasted horrible.

I also have something else to share, at my school you have to only pick at the first row of fruit not any other but I didn't know. I picked from the second row and the lunch lady literally screamed "I better not see you again tomorrow doing the same thing!" I was embarrassed, shocked, and humiliated. I now hate that lunch lady. She doesn't even know how to put on makeup correctly too. She puts on VERY dark mascara to look like the witch she is. Schools could be saving money if they had a greenhouse attached to their building...they could give out fresh fruits and veggies for free...kids should be grazing on that all day throughout their day during classtime...then cook fresh meals.....schools are just lazy cheap..... every school district isn't treated the same either....we know the wealthier districts have better food...they just make excuses cuz they like mistreating the poor.

Fresh, organic fruit & veggies actually taste good to some people. Free food would benefit many kids who's parents don't make a lot of money, but YOU don't like fruits & veggies so they shouldn't get it either if they want it, right? You can have a garden & still have the option to serve other food that tastes good. Trust me we don't like forcing you to take what you don't want, but we have to because the government says we have too.
