A couple of fun facts: Originally, the Space Shuttle had a two-stage fully-reusable flyback design, but that was too expensive to develop on NASA's shoestring budget. Later, there were plans for liquid fuel boosters and an ejectable crew deck on the Shuttle, but that was also too expensive. NASA has less than 0.5% of the US budget anyway (it had 4% during the days of Apollo), so no wonder they can't afford anything cool - they deserve more money.

I don't think saving the whole Orbiter could work as those SRBs will certainly blow the ET and cause more more issue. Not to mention the G forces experience. The Pod idea was much more likely if they could do it but it require major redesign, reason why they didn't do it.

None of these designs are practical in actual spaceflight (but very practical in Kerbal spaceflight). The numerous SRB's would add a large amount of weight, and would need to be jettisoned, or shielded to prevent them from disintegrating on reentry. Both of these would require a major redesign of the shuttle. The midflight abort system would almost certainly ignite the external fuel tank, which would lead to shrapnel and debris being ejected at high velocities, as well as a powerful shockwave. Coupled with holes in the structure caused by the debris, this would've led to a structural failure of the cockpit, and thus death of the crew.
@space103212 жыл бұрын
The space shuttle did have an abort plan. It wasnt good because it was just extending a long pole and ziplining off of it. The pole was used to not hit the wing when jumping.

Thing is, most of these would be impossible irl because from the mid deck and the payload bay there is a hatch / airlock and if it were to separate there would be a huge hole in the back of the cock pit and the mid deck. NASA would have to create a new design for the forward part of the Orbiter.
