I have no mods at all, so I can confirm that's it's just part of the game. If you zoom out, you'll find that it's actually just a massive disk shape. The angle appears to be completely random, and if you get multiple ones at different angles and position the camera correctly you can get them to form an X shape (as Jonas Belgholz has already said).

Pretty sure Laythe’s ocean is confirmed to be water. Edit: just thinking about being rescued somewhere like Laythe. It would be quite a sight, you see something start to catch fire and leave a burning trail behind it and quickly lose sight of it. A minute later you see a lights in the sky, and a jet engine. Then a very loud splash... *Second Edit:* What does Aircraft controls (caps lock) even do?

According to large amounts of research, (1:10) your speculation is probably true, except that the air and sea probably don't have Methane. Methane breaks up when exposed to electromagnetic radiation (light) into carbon and hydrogen. It is more likely that Salt is present in the air, as the air/sea temp. Near the poles is below 0 degrees Celsius, suggesting that Salt (in extremely high concentrations) is keeping the water liquid. Dissolved salt can get into the air when the water evaporates. Plus, Salt in the air doesn't add much of a tint. What may have thrown u off was the visual enhancement mod that u used.
@quoniam4266 жыл бұрын
It also makes up for the unbreathable atmosphere despite the oxygen, just like water on Mars, undrinkable, because worse than the Dead Sea itself. However, that would probably be detrimental to airbreathing engines too, salt would damage them on the long run. I would not be surprised if airbreathing engines on such aircraft would end up unusable upon return, making a fully reusable ship impossible, you'd have to put new engines to the ship. And the hull itself would be corroded quite fast. On Earth sea air is already bad for simple maintenance on buildings near the seaside, but on Laythe, I can't imagine it to be better... So given the time of travel, plus the conditions on Laythe, the aircraft must be next to worhtless upon return. I guess that IRL, it would even be ill advised to use that same craft for reentry on Earth/Kerbin. Passengers and crew should rendezvous in LEO/LKO with an orbital ship to deorbit them safely, unless the craft is insulated enough to wisthand the sea air, but it would make the ship heavier and less efficient. Fortunately, in KSP? such details are absolutely forgettable.

Using the results from the experiments the game provides Laythe's ocean is most likely ordinary water, as the surface temperature is about 4C to 5C. Curiously this is also the temperature at which water is most dense and most stable (for similar reasons to do with how the molecules align.) Indeed the temperature on Laythe is most likely due to it's close proximity to Jool. The tidal heating will both directly provide heat but will also drive rampant volcanism, (due to programming limitations it has not been included in the game.) As a result Laythe's atmosphere will be very rich in potent greenhouse gases. It is not unbelievable that both the greenhouse gases and direct warming will be enough to nudge Laythe's temperature above freezing despite it's distance from kerbol. Think of earth as a lizard that gets most of it's heat from sunning itself but Laythe as a mammal which generates it's own heat and then keeps it in with it's "fur coat" an atmosphere rich in greenhouse gases. Yes earth also generates internal heat, has volcanism and greenhouse gases in it's atmosphere; but it would be pitiful compared to Laythe's output. Just look at Io in our own solar system and how much volcanism and heat that moon can pump out despite it's small size all due to heating from Jupiter's gravity. Make Io a bit bigger so it could hold onto it's atmosphere and add a bit of water and you'd probably have a Laythe.
