Wow! I had the same experience after an Apollo-style mission to Duna. My two-stage lander didn't have enough Delta-V, and Bob Kerman was in the cockpit of the mothership. And I thought THAT situation was intense.

You could try to use smaller payloads so you don’t have to bring a lander and an arriving capsule, I personally use large landers and fuel efficient engines for upper stages like a rhino engine or vectors

i just did my first apollo style landing yesterday, only problem was I couldnt get the lander back into orbit so I just had Neil and Buzz Kerman use EVA packs to get into orbit and had them rendezvous with Michael Kerman in the command pod and got em home. have i confessed my love for alt+f12 yet?
