Breaks my heart to see KSP2 end like this. Matt and Scott Manley taught me pretty much everything I know about REAL space science, as much as is possible with little green goofballs. So many years, so many explosions, so many Kerbals launched into the sky amidst fireballs of doom. If modders can make KSP1 into what we hoped KSP2 would be, I'll be happy. I'll always love No Man's Sky for the wonders of exploring entire galaxies, flying incredible ships and building bases on paradise worlds, but sometimes I feel the need for "fiddly bits" and "hard science" and nothing scratches that itch like KSP. Once the dust settles, and the ultimate fate of KSP2 is decided, I'll see what the amazing modder community can come up with, download their creations, and carry on with KSP1. Thanks Matt, for continuing to come up with KSP content and keeping the flame alight, KSP was one of those quirky, goofy games that had an incredible scientific heart to it, and if the best we can hope for is a modded KSP1, people like you will be instrumental in keeping this thing alive.

there's a mod (forget the name) that records your flights in a very simplified way, so you can use a mod to build a craft at an orbital space station/fuel refinery, land and drill for fuel, bring it back up to the station and dump it to be refined. the mod records resource transfers and the time between them, so when you automate that launch, your station occasionally gets fuel to be refined. it's neat stuff and makes station gameplay more useful and fun. i'm doing a modded playthrough right now where i build orbital refueling stations around every planet in the kerbol system.

One thing to know about the restock mod is that the parts do slightly modify the aerodynamic drag of the parts. So if you do any SSTO testing, for example, you might want to keep that in mind. Most of the restock parts have slightly lower drag. I also recommend someday trying the Simple Construction mod. I downloaded when I got impatient with the progress of KSP 2. It allows you to mine ore, tur it into metal, then turn it into rocket parts. This allows you to build your colonies on the moon or planet directly, and launch space craft from those colonies. I love it. It makes KSP have the colonies update we were promised in KSP 2.

I'd definitely watch an eye-tracking video. I expect there'd either be no surprises, or I'd be utterly blown away by the differences between us. I'm imagining you could also use the eye tracker for other different scenarios like flying jets, planning a complex maneuver, launching a heavy/sluggish SSTO (what key indicators are you paying attention to throughout the flight) etc. Also, I don't know how much setup there is each time you use them, or what they output (like is it just the little overlay thing that you then add to your video file as a layer or something), but you could just record eye tracking for every video then show it at cool times. Like you could have the overlay on while doing your VO then make note of times when something interesting happens and come back and remove the tracking layer from everywhere but the relevant moments (like if you notice that at some point your eyes are darting around quickly or something). Basically do what you can to get your money's worth lol.

Probably TAC life support
@sporkwitch8 ай бұрын
MKS is the main colony mod. Majority of my 1k or so hours of playtime was with KSPIE (KSP Interstellar Extended) and MKS (Modular Kolonization System). I prefer USI Life Support for the life support management; keeps it simple, "supplies" turning into "mulch" and being able to use "fertilizer" to turn mulch back into "supplies"; run out of supplies, timer starts before your kerbals turn into tourists until supplies are provided again. Also introduces home sickness and similar; basically, they need room to move around, and will get cranky and strike if they're cooped up too long, and no matter what, eventually they want to go home, so you have to rotate crews on stations and outposts. It sounds like a lot, but it's actual simple enough to be easy to manage the life support stuff. The colony stuff can get very complicated, but at its base, is also simple and easy to work with, and also includes off-world and orbital construction.
@2nd2lastdodo8 ай бұрын
Does usi life support let you build up bases to a size where kerbals can stay indefinitely? Planning to do an interstellar colony and bringing them back home eventually is not part of the plan^^
@sporkwitch7 ай бұрын
@@2nd2lastdodo It has a "colonization" stat as I recall. I never got to the point of indefinite stays in my own plays, but as you expand a colony and increase its self-sufficiency, it extends the "homesickness" timer, and I think it can hit a point where "hey, we built this place up enough it's basically home anyway." That's not purely USI, but rather aspects that integrate with MKS, because some of the same people work on both mods. I'm far from an expert, and MKS and KSPIE both are very complex. But yeah, as far as my understanding, it's possible to build up a colony to the point that you no longer have to rotate individual Kerbals back to Kerbin because they miss home, but that is very much end-game.

Default: Updates sounds for stock engines/decouplers/wheels etc. -ScienceAlert Realerted: Lets you know when science is available and lets you automatically run and collect them (useful for when there are tons of new science experiments you don't know when to run) -Ship Manifest: Allows you to more precisely control the resources within a vessel -Trajectories: In-flight trajectory visualizer for better aligning yourself for landings, extremely useful for landing multiple craft in a single place -Waypointmanager: Lets you display waypoints during flight -Hudreplacer&Ztheme: Cool looking Dark Mode UI that just looks super sleek(to make it look even more like a modern game). ~~More Visual mods~~ -Distant Object Enhancement & Default config: Lets you visually see other celestial bodies from way, way farther away, where you can literally pick them out one by one on the skybox -Planetshine&Default config: Planets&Moons reflect light on the vessel for more realistic lighting ~~New parts mods~~ -Cryo Tanks & Core: Liquid Hydrogen fuel tanks and LH Storage capability for stock tanks -Cryogenic Engines: Liquid Hydrogen fueled engines -JX2 Antenna: Adds an antenna with 1000G transmission power for use with interstellar craft -Heat Control: New categories of Radiator parts for Near Future parts -Kerbal Atomics: New Nuclear Engine types and reactors -Kerbal Atomics Other Mod Support: Lets some of the new nuclear engines to use Liquid Hydrogen instead of stock Liquid Fuel -Kerbal Planetary Base System: New Part category for building surface bases -The entire Near Future Catalog: Adds an entire tier of very high-tech parts for massive missions -Far Future Technologies: Adds an even higher tier of parts for interstellar-capable craft -Restock+: Fills in a lot of size gaps in the stock parts catalog by adding smaller and/or bigger versions of existing stock parts -Stockalike Station Parts Expansion Redux & Internal Spaces: New station parts for various sizes & internal space files for use with FreeIVA -Universal Storage II Finalized: Modular Parts for custom service modules, also has integration with Life Support mods ~~New Gameplay Systems~~ -Community Resource Pack: Support for new resources for use with other mods -DeepFreeze Continued: Being able to Freeze-Thaw Kerbals for long journeys -SCANsat: New system for mapping out celestial bodies in real time -Space Dust & Space Dust Unbound: Introduces a new harvesting system for atmospheric/exospheric resources for use with high-tech engines -System Heat & configs: Changes the Stock Heat system for a more robust one for more realism and need for radiators -USI Catalog: Non-hardcore Life support system to make manned flights a lot harder (since you can't just leave them in space to do 40 years of gravity assists), and colonies/space stations to actually mean something (You can also go for TCA Life Support instead if you want a few more resources to manage) ~~New Destinations~~ -Outer Planets Mod: Extends the Kerbol System by adding analogs of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune with a few moons for each -Minor Planets Expansion: Extends Outer Planets Mod even more by adding 15 more objects like analogs for more Asteroid and Kuiper Belt Objects and various Comets -Kcalbeloh System: Adds 3 new star systems that all orbit a blackhole outside the Kerbol system, and a wormhole on the orbit of Sarnus for OPM (or Jool if you don't have OPM) for better access to it With all of this you will basically turn KSP to what KSP2 was promised to be.

I haven’t been interested in KSP content for a while, but you doing a modded playthrough has definitely got me keen. I have no hope KSP 2 will be finished and optimised. If you even partly recreate what KSP 2 should have been, including interstellar, with mods it’ll defo fill the void in my heart. I used to love this game and really wish its sequel could’ve of expanded upon what makes this game great. Good luck and have fun, I’ll be watching their series keenly! 😊 If you want a good medium for interstellar travel, check out far future technologies, it adds fusion engines which are hyper efficient.

Outer Planets is a must for me, love watching youtubers explore them too. The valentine system could be fun for a simplified 'interstellar' experience too. Always wanted to send a craft there with a huge jool gravity assist, did it once but it was a stock probe so I lost com range lol

A minor mod I reccomend is called Bon Voyage. It makes using rovers for science or moving between colony buildings less painfully by "teleporting" the rover in exchange for the amount of electric charge the drive would've taken.

I watched your build time lapse at 2x speed and it was easy enough to follow so I'm sure the rest of your audience will be fine. Also the prospect of a new KSP playthrough has won you a subscriber.

I would still love to see a series from you with either some interstellar travel mods or RSS. Vanilla, especially after what happened with KSP2, is getting repetitive on KZbin.

Hey, nice to see this! Also by Nertea: Stockalike Station Parts Expansion Redux is one of the best mods I think you could add. Absolutely *_gorgeous_* assortment of components of all sizes, including IVA scenes. And a lot of these parts are useful for large deep-space vessels too!

Don’t forget to reskin your engines with ReStock, the Poodle can be a long single bell or a quad bell. Most engines also have boattail options like the Mainsail or the Swivel.

Two must-have mod types for colony-building IMO: life support and surface base parts. For life support, there are three big names: Snacks!, USI Life Support, and TAC Life Support. Snacks! takes everything Kerbals need and lumps it into just one resource, which makes the mod extremely approachable and easy to use. USI has a couple different resources which beyond strictly keeping Kerbals going can also be used for very simple in-situ food production and waste recycling, but it's still pretty straightforward to use, and it's still very forgiving of operator error (unless you manually change the setting to make it unforgiving, which it will let you do). TAC is definitely the most realistic, but it's also much harder to work with, so you (and your viewer base) might find it a bit overkill. There are also three mods I know of for surface bases: Planetary Base Systems, Pathfinder, and USI Modular Kolonization. Planetary Base Systems is definitely the simplest and jives very well with the way KSP's existing craft design works as well as KSP's existing aesthetic, at the expense of being the least versatile of the three in terms of base layouts. Pathfinder is designed with portability in mind, and is probably the closest to modern surface base concepts in its aesthetic. USI is part of a large mod suite that obviously works extremely well with itself, but it can be used independently and it also has quite a bit of fully optional integration with other mods, plus the aesthetic is very Mars DRA 1.0 which is a look I think you'd like. None of these mods conflict, so you *could* use more than one. I've tried them all, and personally I use USI-LS and Planetary Base Systems. I think USE-LS with the habitation time mechanic disabled is the perfect level of complexity to require a bit of thought and add some challenge to interplanetary missions and surface bases, but never be time-consuming to plan or annoying or frustrating to play with. As for bases, I just don't spend enough time playing KSP that I want to deal with Pathfinder or USI-MKS. Heads-up: Pathfinder and USI-LS do not support each other. You should be good with any other combination. Heads-up 2: you might find the Ship Manifest mod helpful for moving resources around between bases, ships, and surface and suborbital vehicles. And one last thing, do yourself a favor and add Planetshine to your visual mods. If Minmus isn't enough to make you grin, Duna and Jool will be. I wish it were under better circumstances, but it's good to have you join us at last on KSP 1+mods!

God dammit... Watching this just makes me HURT. They killed KSP2 and didn't even have the guts to own up to their crime. It hurts so much to see one of the few games I was actually excited for, get done so dirty. Modding KSP will always be there, but I can FEEL the code groaning under the strain.

Good to see you back at it. My recommendation is to install all the parts mods at the beginning, especially if you want to use some sort of life support mod. I might also recommend a career save with contracts to complete to finance the colony. I have something similar going in one of my saves, but what you’re embarking on reminds me of Scott Manley’s original playthrough of maybe 8-10 years ago. Can’t wait to see where this goes!

A mod I always liked was called something like Smart Parts. It adds little control boxes that you can stick on parts and programme them to do certain things automatically (via action groups) when certain conditions are met. So for instance, you can stick one on a drop-tank and program it to jettison the tank when it's empty (otherwise you have to pin the menus for the tank in order to manually monitor it and that clutters your screen).Or you can stick a different one on a rocket and have it automatically run science when a particular altitude is reached. There are lots of other applications - well worth playing with.

This series is great! I was surprised to see that your chosen mod setup is almost identical to what I've been running. All KSP needs is a little ReStock and beautification, and it's easily competitive with KSP2. Add in mods for interstellar, and suddenly it's not just even, KSP1 is actually better.

Hello, Matt! I have a few mod suggestions for your next mod(s). Extraplanetary Launchpads (adds towards the colonies goal you mentioned, by adding the ability to build crafts on-world) Magpie Mods (makes parts shiny) kOS (allows automating via programming) OPM (a good start for a planet pack) Kcalbeloh (a good interstellar mod, if you anticipate doing interstellar stuff later down the line) Mk2 Expansion (more Mk2 parts for all your wacky spaceplanes) Mk3 Expansion (ditto but for Mk3) Kerbal Wind Tunnel (advanced information about flight profiles and flight regimes for your spaceplanes in the editor)

okay, here's my suggestion: What is the point of colonizing other planets other than to get off of the primary planet, right? Maybe even outside of the star system? Perhaps find some alternate system mods and make this series' "mission" trying to get to interstellar travel with the end goal of colonizing another star system. Upon colonization of this new system, you then get a system with new science to do

I'm glad I followed you along the way, I didn't buy KSP2 waiting for it to become stable and community supported mostly because of you. I was surprised to see you were back to KSP, I had no idea KSP2 was failing/failed. Thanks for your wonderful videos, you saved me a handful of cash and you've made it all very entertaining and fun.

I think that you should add the snacks mod in the future, it's a simplistic, but fun life support mod that's easy to comprehend and has you considering what you'll need for your missions. It even has other mod parts to customize what resources your kerbals need, like the oxygen mod or whatever the other mods are that add to snacks. The point is, is that the mod series is good for bench marking colony's self sustainability.

Honestly this is one of the first (along with the more recent videos about KSP 2) that really made me stay for the content for Matt Lowne. I’m really appreciative of the mod list. Might start adding a txt file to my installs to clarify what mods I have incase I need to replicate them of fix them because I’ve lost saves over this. Overall though, it’s nice to see a mods list because that not only helps new players get into mods but also start learning which are good and which you can miss.

I recommend extraplanety launchpads, or simpleconstruction, both allowing rockets to be manufactured and launched offworld using in-situ materials. Metals for the former, the latter is massively simplified to use vallina ores Allows for more unique rocket designs that can leverage advantages of the world you decide to colonise

Like everyone has said, KSP 1 can be KSP 2 if you install enough mods. With the game not going to get another major update, that helps make it a stable modding platform that hopefully will only get better and more refined over time.

In my current playthrough, i built a modular multi-mission interplanetary lab that ferries crews between planets. Basically a space station with an engine and huge fuel tanks that get topped up by supply rockets in Kerbin orbit. The whole thing is solar powered, which gets a bit tricky when visiting the outer planets, so i'm constantly adding ever more solar panels between missions...
@ulle858 ай бұрын
Hi Matt if you want a truly unique (to KSP) video, you should do a let’s play of the Kerbal kommander mod - basically you start with a small amount of funds and can build any spacecraft with that amount - except you spawn at one of dozens of space stations placed around the Kerbin System. You can then do various missions and trading flying to different stations to sell your cargo and earn money. You can also pay somebody to learn of nearby broken derelict ships that you can loot. I remember playing it some years ago together with Kerbal attachment system - I then worked as a scavenger visiting derelict ships and removing useful individual parts and attaching them to my own ship and gradually upgrading my ship. It was a very interesting experience and set some new constraints to your normal KSP building when having to go between different planet/station orbits and still have fuel and cargo room

love the new series and love that the first video is pretty similar to stock to give a good jumping off point into the mods. Really looking forward to it as i have over 500 hours in KSP and the only mod iv used is mechjeb and cant wait to see some good mods. probably dont need an eye tracker as its pretty expensive. Maybe create a video in real time with highlighting in post to show the sections of the screen you should be focused on

I highly recommend extraplanetary launchpads and MKS + USI suite, couple these with SCANsat you can make self sufficient colonies from which you can build rockets (be warned it is a complicated system, so if your looking for the just the rocket build aspect pick up extraplanetary launchpads)

YOU NEED THE LIFE SUPPORT MOD THIS EARLY IN THE GAME SO THAT YOU WONT KILL A MILLION KERBALS WHEN YOU ADD A COLONIZATION AND LIFE SUPPORT MOD!!! also it a really fun way to play because it give you a deadline and brings a completely different mindset
@zeebs11838 ай бұрын
@WernherKerman I’d personally recommend TAC life support it’s basically vanilla but gives you the pressure of deadlines and the bonus of necessary refueling and waste management and doesn’t add complex greenhouses or anything. I’ve used it personally and you have to factor it into basically all launches that land off planet and then I’d recommend all the visual mods in this video. Have fun if you decide to use TAC life support!
