Like most of us human beings, Teddy had his good and bad qualities. Living in the western United States, I enjoy having the ability to visit national forests and parks. I don't think that would have happened if it had not been for Roosevelt and his genuine interest in protecting some of our beautiful scenery from the exploitation and destruction caused by people trying to hack a living out of the land.

@@mahadragon He is sometimes criticized for being too bellicose in his approach to foreign policy. Some people who met him thought that his exuberant approach to life and personal interactions seemed a little nutty. Even though he did a lot to protect wild areas in the U.S., he also shot a lot of animals in his life. Of course, animal lovers aren't going to admire that aspect of Roosevelt's life. Business tycoons greatly resented his interference in their efforts to monopolize industries and markets... There isn't any way to win everybody's admiration in a crowded world, Mahadragon. The world was a lot less crowded in Roosevelt's day, but there were still many people alive at that time who found one thing or another to criticize in Roosevelt's life.

I was watching a documentary on the early 1900's, and they covered how it was that the Panama Canal was built. Teddy was a big driver behind it, but he didn't do it through "conventional" means! The country of Panama didn't exist before that....

If you havent, do read up on it, it is quite the story. But for the love of him, he would not turn around, no matter how hurt or ill he became, and never fend off the itineraries course! As he said in his annual message to Congress as President in 1905, "We cannot have too much immigration of the right sort and we should have none whatsoever of the wrong sort....The prime need is to keep out all immigrants who will not make good citizens. The laws now existing for the exclusion of undesirable immigrants should be strengthened, Adequate means should be adopted, enforced by sufficient penalties, to compel steamship companies engaged in the passenger business to observe in good faith the law which forbids them to encourage or solicit immigration to the United States." His views did not change over the course of his career. As early as 1888, he said in a speech in New York City, "I wish Congress would revise our laws about immigration. There should be proper proof of personal capacity to earn an American living and enough money to ensure a decent start under American conditions. This would stop the influx of cheap labor." He did not share the desire of liberals (and many business leaders) to import poverty and breed a new proletariat. In the same speech, he continued to urge that "we should aim to exclude absolutely not only all persons who are known to be believers in anarchist principles or members of anarchist societies; but also all persons who are of a low moral tendency or of unsavory reputation." TR thus opposed policies that would undermine living standards or support radicalism.

This is, as I recall, the ONLY Documentary I've EVER SEEN where relatively immediat DIRECT DESCENDANTS have participated so fully in the telling of said Presidential - or other American "noteworthy" - in a documentary, of which I've enjoyed quite a number). What a treat! 😄 Thank you to the two Roosevelts! 👈😄 It's nice to here them directly, even when telling the story as it's oft been told by others. 👈😉 I just wish they'd shared more personal details and anecdotes; potential insights into the "private" life of TR. Through the Brazilian Wilderness gave insight into his evolution after being president. He did a lot of reflecting in that book. They can be tough to read since he wrote in Olde English and sometimes very technical. In Africa he was testing the new at the time 30-06 for the military on various dangerous game animals. Teddy, personally recruited the roughs and toughs out of society, to educate, train, organize and guide the first American Volunteer Army.....he called the Rough Riders. A collection of Blacks, Irish, gamblers, bounty hunters, Indians and other marginal men. They were trained at Fort Sam Houston to fight on horseback. Soon to be deployed to the tropics of Guantanamo Bay. My 17 yr old Irish grandfather was one of his leaders. Teddy thought my namesake was 21 yrs old. Teddy was the champion for and of all. He was a true conservationist. Remember too, his first supper guest at the WH, was Booker T. Washington. Professor Washington soon became his fast friend and advisor. Teddy, along with his followers, my grandfather included hunted mountain lion in northern Colorado. He literally bagged a monster. This President gave my immigrant grandfather and namesake a chance in life. He was a remains a hero to all. And yes, I have all of the paperwork. FYI....he hunted lions in Meeker, CO. I still hunt there to this day.

I have to say TR was a man's man. And he deserves respect for being present for the battle at San Juan Hill. Although as stated, the actual event is far from the Hollywood depections. My biggest gripe about the affair is the photo of Roosevelt and the Rough Riders on the hill....it was cropped to cut out most of the buffalo soldiers. I'm a white southern conservative but no racist. Give credit where credit is due. The buffalo soldiers were very instrumental in winning that battle

Well, my grandfather, an Irish tough from New Orleans, at age 17 yrs old, accepted an invitation from Teddy to train to become a Rough Rider. Tommy accepted, Teddy thought he was 21 yrs old. Tommy and Teddy most likely connected at the Menger bar, with Tommy there to fight....he walked away with validation, training and a job.....and a superstar willing to guide his passions. Scrack Arcata I don't know if Putin was ever awarded the order of Lenin when he was a KGB agent for the Soviet Union, but I do know Teddy Roosevelt was awarded the American Medal of Honor. He's the only American POTUS to have done so. He was also shot once at the beginning of a speech he gave, he only went for medical care after he was done speaking. I'm bias though, he's my favorite US POTUS. He also cared very much for the people he served in all aspects of his life, and always thought of his men first while in the military. He was the greatest 20th century US leader, but I think it's a great thing for every person in every country to have a love for a past, or present leader. It helps to build a love for your nation and a love for trying to make it a better place for all your fellow citizens.

A lot of comments from people who know nothing about history, nor care to know about the truth. Roosevelt was an American hero who didn't have to fight in the Spanish American War but did it anyways. He brought reform to the food and drug industry. He singlehandedly created the conservation of lands. He broke large monopolies. Sure he had his controversies, but even those controversies I think can be explained away as actions with no bad intentions or racist motivations. For example, his relationship with the Native American people was on the well intended but short sighted notion that the problems of inequality could be solved via assimilation. Unfortunately those policies didn't help those who didn't want to give up their language and culture, etc. I don't think he honestly did such policies because he was racist, but rather he thought modern education and training in the customs of American ways would help the Native American's be able to succeed and have a place in the 20th century. Another example was Roosevelt unilaterally giving a group of black military men dishonorable discharges while as president because of a drunken brawl. In retrospect some may say this was racist, but considering Roosevelt was a very patriotic military man I believe that the action (though harsh) was strictly because he flat out did not tolerate bad behavior that would make the military look bad in any way. Another example would be the seizing of Yellowstone as America's first park, which happened to be home to a few tribes of Native American's. The only rationale I can have on this is that the area already was designated as federal land, which all reservations are on federal lands, so Roosevelt merely saw it as the government's right to do as it wanted with such land, and since it was to be protected as a park he saw no issue because it would never be destroyed. In his mind he was guaranteeing the land would forever remain "as it was", which would be as the Native American people would have done anyways. Some say that he's one of the greatest president's ever. Some say he's a near great president. For many years he was listed among the top three president's of the 20th century. I think a lot of that perception is largely because he was not just the first president to be of the film and radio age, but because he was the link between the old world and the new world, therefore he had the benefit of being a larger than life figure through word of mouth like Washington and Lincoln. To top it all off, he was something of a renaissance man who was a war hero and academic scholar and adventurer who knew how to capture the attention of the media although he sometimes had a bad relationship with the media who disliked his gruff bluntness and "tell it like it is" attitude. He died in 1919, the year before the very first radio broadcasts began in the U.S. Franklin Roosevelt, on the other hand, made great use of radio through the 1930s and the beginning of the 40s. He also missed motion pictures with sound, i.e., “talkies,” by almost a decade.

@@inkyguy While that is true, radio was invented in 1895 by Marconi. That being said, Tesla in reality invented radio (1892) as Marconi took 14 patents of Tesla's to make the radio. So technically, Roosevelt was around to see the radio age. Grover Cleveland was president when those early radio experiments began, and in 1909 Marconi won the Nobel Prize for radio, so Roosevelt was president when radio was basically adopted. Teddy Roosevelt and Franklin were two very accomplished politicians. Teddy being a staunch Republican and Franklin was a Democrat. I'm glad Teddy went after the Robber barrons and successfully busted up several huge monopolies. Standard oil being one notable. Franklin was effective helping navigate our country through the effects of the Depression. The measures Franklin took to improve the economy was phenomenal. Franklin helped in multiple ways but one that stands out was his public works programs. Creating jobs by making improvements with highway's , canals and many other building projects made a huge difference. Franklin was very effective with communication. His fireside chats using the radio to keep the public informed of his efforts and successful accomplishments were eagerly welcomed by the citizens.

I thank God for this man and his far seeing conservation efforts nearly every day. I cherish our public lands, forests, and natural wonders more than I can express. American fundamental ideals brought me half way to loving this country (especially when I was able to see them set next to many other nations') but the land took my heart fully. I don't hunt, but I support Roosevelt's vision of hunting. I fail to understand the moral opposition to conservative minded hunting. Animals in the wild don't die very humane deaths. They become prey, their teeth go and they starve, they freeze to death, it's terrible. A humane shot through the lung or heart is far quicker and humane.
