The shin is the common name for the front of the lower leg bone (tibia) and its associated muscles and tendons. Muscles on the front of the leg (primarily the anterior tibialis) serve to point the toes and foot upwards (dorsiflexion). First, let's make a distinction between anterior shin splints and posterior shin splints. Anterior shin splints exist on the front of the leg. Posterior shin splints present pain along the inside edge of the lower leg.
Posterior shin splints present pain along the inside edge of the lower leg. In some cases, bumps can also be felt along this area. They are typically caused by various muscle imbalances in this part of the leg. Flat arches, over-pronation (eversion), and activities that require frequent changes of direction can all contribute to posterior shin splints. Poor shoes and overactive calves (muscle imbalance) can also greatly increase the chances of developing posterior shin splints. Many times the shin splints arise from pain in the muscle due to overuse, but often times the pain can be due to stress fractures in the bone. This is often seen in those who "tough it out" and continue the painful activity without allowing for sufficient recovery.
Treatment always entails rest and avoiding the activity that caused the pain. Shin splints start out as a minor annoyance, but can become debilitating if not allowed to heal in the early stages. Ice and anti-inflammatories will help reduce the pain and inflammation, but should not be used to continue the painful activity. Correcting poor running form, fitting for appropriate shoes, and stretching before and after activity will aid prevention.
KT Tape provides an excellent means of helping the muscles to relax and facilitate the healing process, also helping to reduce inflammation. As with any overuse injury, use the tape in conjunction with rest to promote the healing process and see reduced recovery times.

I'm in Maui and got splints in my right leg after a run. Bought your tape at Long's, followed the video and now I'm not stuck on the condo couch anymore. The pain is much more manageable. Thanks!!

@rinlag123 It's actually really simple for shin splints- KT Tape is basically holding everything together to prevent microtears (shin splint pain) from occurring. Works beautifully.

@ChillDudeTwentyTwo KT Tape is used for various techniques to increase fluid flow, de-load pain receptors, facilitate or inhibit muscles, reduce edema by opening up the lymphatic system, or mechanically support a joint through its full range of motion. Based on the application technique, how much stretch, where, and in what direction - you can achieve drastic improvements in acute or chronic conditions. In some cases, such as muscle technique, KT Tape signals to the nervous system what we want.

You could give it a try and see if it helps but in general KT Tape is not a good solution for stress fractures.

@ChillDudeTwentyTwo These mechanoreceptors are located just under the skin and are highly sensitive to surface sensation. These signals, applied correctly, can encourage the brain and body to heal itself without the use of drugs or restrictive modalities. In other techniques, such as the “band-aid” technique, we can mechanically de-load painful areas and increase blood flow.

@mjc3389yt KT Tape is meant to be used before, during, and after any type of physical activity. If you have a recurring issue with shin splints I would tape before- you'll be amazed at the difference.

@ChillDudeTwentyTwo KT Tape will therapeutically create a sensation at the surface that will stimulate and promote the body’s natural response to pain. We can also use the tape to reduce swelling by opening up the channels that move these fluids. This technique creates convolutions in the skin that pull on the fibers that connect to the lymphatic system. This tugging and subsequent opening of the lymphatics allows this fluid to quickly flow away from the area.

@ChillDudeTwentyTwo no gimmick. Light elastic tape has been used for 30 years to address these issues all over the world. Olympic athletes, professional athletes, and athletes of all types have used KT Tape with enormous success. KT Tape has not only saved careers and allowed the weekend warrior to remain active, it has helped tens of thousands of people recover after surgery, heal faster after acute injuries, and perform at optimum levels whether it’s in competition or in everyday life.

@420killawhale Usually it just boils down to a couple tricks when applying the tape. The most common reason is the ends of the tape being stretched. After that it's usually not rubbing your hand vigorously over the tape after applying to activate the adhesive. Let us know if those help? thx.

How does the "new" method you posted of taping shin splints compare to this video? I have been using the 'old' method for about a year and just noticed you have a new video on post shin splints... please advise. Thank you! PS: my point of pain is about 3 inches above the ankle bone.

Here are some ideas; - Don't increase your mileage too quickly. - Run on softer surfaces, when possible. - Give yourself enough rest and recovery time. - Get the right running shoes. - Replace your running shoes if they're old. - Do heel raises and toe raises. - Stretch your calves.

It would be very unlikely. If you apply incorrectly really the only side effect is that you won't see the results you should. Don't sweat it if it doesn't look exactly like in the video. It doesn't have to match exactly to work.

No- rigid tapes like athletic tape wouldn't be kind to your shins. KT Tape works because it's highly elastic so it moves with your body while providing support.

I have this issue and I'm currently in PT school. I was hoping you could tell me why you have the Tibialis Posterior in a flexed position, rather than in an extension/stretched position? In my mind it would make sense to evert the foot and dorsiflex to stretch the muscle and then apply the tape that way the tape doesn't allow the muscle to contract as much. Or do you want the tape to help contract the muscle? Any feedback as to why the taping is done in this way would be greatly appreciated. Thank You!
