At exactly 4:30:55 a.m. on Jan. 17, 1994, Los Angeles was rocked by a magnitude 6.7 earthquake that caused catastrophic damage, particularly near the epicenter in the San Fernando Valley. 57 people lost their lives and property damage was estimated between $13 and $50 billion. This is an extended segment of KTLA 5’s live coverage from that day.

I was 9 when it happened. Fell out of bed and while running out of the room stubbed my big toe on the door losing my nail. It never fully grew back.

I was same age as you and I remember our apartment was pretty damaged. I remember It was fun for us kids cause there was no school 😂

@@jazminsanchez8046 I remember waiting outside all day. Felt like eternity! Had to wait for the apartment building to be cleared to enter. We have lived through some crazy times! Hope life has and will continue to treat you well.

I was the same age too. My tv flew across my room and I had PTSD for weeks through the after shocks

OMG that is the last earthquake ive been in. That earthquake seemed so long like it was never going to stop! I was13& had just moved to Vegas from Cali the year before but my cousin and I were both visiting at our grandparents house for the week. Lol we both woke up said earthquake got in the doorway. I cut my finger real bad on a mirror that was on that door. My grandma yelled at me for bleeding all over her rug. LOL

1994 was a crazy year for us in Southern California. I'll never will forget it. It was loud with sparks and flashes from the lines outside, scary time. Can you imagine in a few months after the Northridge quake, the murders of Nicole and Ron in June and the OJ Bromco chase. I witnessed that near LAX when they were on the 405 going North towards his residence in Brentwood...helicopters flying everywhere above us,crazy times. RIP to Hal Fishman, Larry McCormick and Stan Chambers...it's nice to see them again.

The swimming pool in center of our apartments was making 12 ft waves because of earthquake. Terrible earthquake and aftermath.

13:10 aftershock caught on camera from KTLA TV Station. Wow. I saw on WAPA-TV station is shaking of aftershock in 2020 and last year was struck of earthquake in Northeast coast of Puerto Rico, WLII-TV Station has shaking during news broadcasting live only shaking for 5 seconds.

⁠​⁠​⁠@@PRECIADOR1. It was originated on cassette. 2. Digital?? 1994. Local News. Think about that. 3. Has nothing to do with storage. Apparently you know nothing about TV resolution standards. You realize tv broadcasts from back then are in 480i (interlaced). You must consider up resolution, and then followed by KZbin compression. The only things that look crystal clear from old tv is because they were shot on film. Only shows like I Love Lucy were shot on film. This is why it can be up-res’d to 4K or higher and look like it was filmed on a modern day camera.

Wow i don't remember any shaking cuz i was sound asleep at 5 years old. But i remember it being so dark in our house when i woke, cuz the power was out in Buena Park orange county. I remember the floor collapsed in our main hallway restroom. And then i remember all of our family being outside before the sun even came up and the neighbors talking about the fears and dangers of it all. My oldest sister was carrying me i was confused but i could sense the fear about whatever just took place cuz everyone was outside in my neighborhood.

I'm a bit older ☺... I've experienced many earthquakes. This is the only one where I was actually scared for my life. Another one is definitely coming. Most buildings are up to a code where you have nothing to worry about. But. You just don't know what ll happen when when the big one hits. Just have supplies and water ready. Don't text and drive. You don't want to drive off of a collapsed overpass.
